Here's a List of Frequently Asked Questions. Read before posting your question in this thread or in the forum. Please use the search function as most topics have been addressed at some point. Discussion of gambling before you reach the legal age (21 for Vegas and AC), is not allowed. Discussion of what you can do if you are under 21 is perfectly acceptable. Renting out rooms in LV Lifestyle As per Mat Sklansky's post in ATF (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showpost.php?p=15970425&postcount=58) the Vegas Lifestyle form is acceptable for short-term housing requests, but the Marketplace forum is the only forum where room rentals and other real estate offers can be made we have a marketplace on this site for people who want to rent out rooms. the Vegas forum is there for people to discuss Vegas and during special vegas events it can also be a place where people organize get-togethers and temporary living situations.

What is ok -People coming to las vegas needing a place to stay for a short term basis (vacation, tournament etc) and are looking for connections -Asking questions about where are good locations, where other people live and what they would recommend and etc. What is not ok -Using 2+2 as a commercial enterprise to rent out rooms in different houses -Spamming rooms for rent in LV Lifestyle -People living in las vegas looking for a poker roomate, posts of this nature should instead be placed in the Marketplace forum

  1. Where are the softest games at [insert limit here]?
  • Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker.
  1. Where should I go to eat for my bachelor party, wedding party, ingrown toenail removal party, etc? Try the fine dining thread (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/108/las-vegas-lifestyle/las-vegas-fine-dining-thread-214505/) or the casual dining thread. (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/108/las-vegas-lifestyle/las-vegas-casual-dining-thread-967298/)
  2. How do I decide which hotel to stay at? There are many independent criteria which can drive a decision - cost, location, amenities/facilities, luxury, etc. which makes it impossible to arrive at a universally "best" hotel to stay at. Expect to pay a premium (either in terms of room rates or increased gambling minimums) for proximity to the Strip, newer hotels, and more amenities/facilities (including a hotel/casino vs. a hotel only). In general, there are a few broad classifications that can be made (classifications done subjectively by intended audience that they market to): Strip Top Tier (top of the line luxury, relatively new/remodeled, often have a unique theme/schtick, very expensive resorts): Mandalay Bay, Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Venetian, Wynn, Aria (CityCenter). Older Strip Megaresorts (top of the line or tried to be at one point, but have been superceded, generally still generate enough interest to be expensive): Luxor, MGM Grand, NYNY, Flamingo, Mirage, Treasure Island. Second Tier Strip Megaresorts (places that never really aimed to be the king of the Strip, but have good locations and are much more affordable): Tropicana, Excalibur, Monte Carlo, Planet Hollywood, Paris, Bally's, Harrah's. Blatant Discount Strip Options (places that market to the bargain hunters): Bill's, Imperial Palace, Casino Royale. North Strip (arguably still on the Strip, but physically separated from the rest by a pretty wide gap; typically discount-oriented): Circus Circus, Riviera, Sahara, Hilton, Stratosphere. Downtown (most downtown casinos are discount-oriented with low gambling limits and cheaper amenities): El Cortez, Golden Spike, Fitzgerald's, Fremont, Golden Nugget, Binion's, Golden Gate, Plaza, California, Main Street Station. Off-Strip, Strip-like Hotels (playing to the same audience as many on the Strip, but physically located off-Strip): Palms, Rio, Hard Rock. Just Off-Strip, Downtown-like Hotels (playing to the same audience as many Downtown, but located within a mile of the Strip): Gold Coast, Orleans, Wild Wild West, Hooters, Terrible's, South Point. Off-Strip, unclustered (many of these hotel/casinos are unclustered and are geographically scattered; they aim for the discount audience but also draw a higher percentages of locals): Arizona Charlie's, Boulder, Sam's Town, Sunset Station, Santa Fe, Jerry's Nugget. Non-Casino Hotels: Around the Strip and Downtown there are a ****load of hotels without casinos. Obviously these are the cheapest options and many chains are represented - Days Inn, Embassy Suites, Marriott, Residence Inn, Best Western, Howard Johnson, etc. Notable non-casino hotels directly on the Strip are Polo Towers and the Jockey Club.
  3. Where can I find a gigantic list of things you do not see in vegas? Right here! (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/108/las-vegas-lifestyle/things-you-dont-see-much-vegas-861124/)
  4. What is the poker rate at X casino/How do I get it? Follow this link!: http://www.allvegaspoker.com/poker_rates... I'm in Vegas next week for CES- first time in a long time. I'll be working during the day, but I have nights free to play. This might be a stupid question, but are the games generally good wherever you go? I'm typically a 2/5 or 1/2 player, so I'm not looking for anything particularly big.

It's impossible to know without a crystal ball.

Exactly; you will be sitting with some random assortment of players. Your table could suck, while the one right next to you is hella good.

if you're in vegas during a generally busy time like CES at 1/2 or 2/5 and sit at a bad table, just get up and move to a different one. if that one also sucks, move to a different pokerroom. if you end up thinking that all tables in all rooms suck, then you're probably just not a winning player.

Dear Anyone. I flat don't understand how the betting on Vegas slots works. I live in England and over here, the price you see is what it is per spin. So if you're playing a £2 machine - say - I'm a very low roller, sorry! - when you press the button you spend £2. I've watched loads of Vegas people like Vegas Matt and NG Slots and they choose - say - remember I don't know what I'm talking about! - $1 denomination but it's $50 a spin. Or - $-something-else denomination but $50 - same amount - per spin. As it's the same amount per spin - I'm using $50 as a slightly random amount because it's an amount they often use - what are they gaining by changing denomination? And why is it $50 and not $1 as it's - say - $1 denom? Someone told me once it's the amount per line but I'm not quite 'with' that - over here, some £2 a go slots have ten lines, some have 20, some change the amount of lines in the bonus from what they are in the games but the price is still £2 per game, the amount you spend per spin doesn't change. How come it stays constant on British slots but not on American ones? (You CAN change the amount per game here - the £2 slots give you 20p-50p-£1 options but that's still the price per game. When you press the button, that's how much gets deducted. It's not 20p denom, £2 per spin, it's 20p per spin and that's it!) If it IS to do with the amount of lines, somehow (and I'm not quite seeing how and the NG's/Matts don't explain it anywhere) why change the denom lower if you're still spending the same amount per actual spin, what's the point? I'm not likely to go to Las Vegas but at least I'd actually UNDERSTAND what's going on when I watch it on YouTube! Yours hopefully Chris.

In the States, the betting denomination is typically displayed as the bet per credit per line for both slots and video poker. leon's most recent post in his TR (https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showp... (https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showpost.php?p=58431420&postcount=449)) provides an example. Each credit costs 50c. He bets 5 credits per line/hand on 80 lines, for a total wager of 400 credits or $200. His spin poker hits are a bit closer to what you'll see on slot machines as far as lines vs hands, but the same concept applies - most slots will have dozens or hundreds of lines to bet, and each line costs X credits to bet.

So when someone's doing - again, random example to make a point, not a real-world one - $1 denom, $75 per spin they're betting on 75 lines, and if they change that to - say - 50c denom, $75 a spin they're betting on 150 lines? Do I have that right? Why wouldn't it be more worthwhile keeping it on lower denom, more winlines because you'd have more chances of clusters of wins than higher denom, fewer winlines? And last question until one of you good, patient people answers this Vegas idiot.....!! As the machines are on percentages - I dunno if the progressives count as part OF the percentages but pretend they DON'T for the purposes of this question otherwise it gets complicated! - why does it matter what you bet? They've got to pay out the same percentage anyway, no matter what the bet, so you're ultimately going to win the same amount, aren't you? I mean 90% is 90% whether you're spending $1 a go or $100 a go so what's the real point of spending the bigger amount (or whatever the percentage is)? Apologies in advance for being dumbass, Chris.

Posted this in OOT: My wife and I were in town for a couple of days and while walking back to the car from a random antique store, a guy lost the leash on his dog and was trying to get it to come back to him (it was a little dog). When he finally got hold of it again, he started screaming at it and kicking it. Several people saw this and one guy called the police and hung aroun... See full post

I know this is old but I just saw it and decided I'd comment because I had a similar experience. Calling the cops wasn't the best idea. Even if they do care, there's only so much they can do. Who you should've called was the SPCA. They are pretty iffy about response time, but if they do arrive, as long as there are witnesses they will take the dog - by force if necessary. If the SPCA are backed up and unable to arrive in a reasonable amount of time, I still wouldnt call the cops, because as I said, their hands are tied. All they can do is give the guy a citation. So call the SPCA and if they can't make it, you may have to take the dog by force yourself (if you care enough to go that far) and drop it off at a no-kill shelter. Vegas has plenty of good ones. One thing I can guarantee is that if you do personally intervene, the cops will NOT arrest you.

None of that matters to people playing slots. All that matters is how cool the bonus features are. How pretty are the pictures and the ding ding ding.

max bets can make a difference when playing slots from MGM

If you’re wondering whether you should you play max bet on penny slots — or any other type of slot for that matter — the simple truth is that most slots don’t offer any additional benefits to placing a maximum wager. In most cases, if you land a win, you’ll always be paid relative to the winning combination of symbols and the amount you wagered, or you’ll still qualify for the jackpot prize. However, there are some slots that unlock additional features if you place a max bet. These additional features could include the following: Extra bonus games. Extra paylines or combinations of winning symbols. Multipliers that grow depending on how much you bet. Qualifying for entry into a progressive jackpot in jackpot slots. A straight boost to the RTP for the player.

Get USD before you fly. You'd get reamed on exchange at a casino window. Your bank is far more likely to have a better conversion rate.

Paylines are usually not the difference. It’s usually just a multiplier on awards. There can be differences in frequencyand size of jackpot awards. But suffice it to say that it’s not as cut and dry as you’re making it sound. In fact usually higher denom provides more RTP, not less.

Random question- how much is say a decent mid level condo/ house in vegas? For basic. Let’s just say wood floors, enough space as a bachelor pad (say 1 bedroom/ 1 bath) + is in a somewhat safe area. From my research (not sure how good bc idk what is safe Vs unsafe), I would guess condo is 200-300k and house would be prolly 300-400k? For areas let’s say vegas, summerlin, and Henderson. Thanks for any thoughts on topic. I’m considering moving to vegas if I ever can get to a point where I could buy a house/ condo full in cash and maybe work a less serious gig that paid lower than current salary- that may be less stressful. I kinda want to move to vegas to be around the best live tournament series. Probably a 5-10 year away type event but may consider it- I’m from northeast now and the winters kill me + my job doesn’t allow for me to visit vegas as much as I would like (I get 4 weeks of vacation a year- I kill 2 days also when I fly to and from vegas so traveling there can be obnoxious).

I think you are low. I did a thread about retiring there and kept an eye on Zillow for a while, and drove around Summerlin/Henderson neighborhoods last fall (even did an open house), and I don't think you are going to find much house in Summerlin or Henderson for $300-$400K.

The issue w condos is the monthly fees. Plenty of safe condos in that range though. Houses are going to be hit or miss by neighborhood, but you can probably find something. You need a good realtor (happy to refer) and the ability & willingness to move quick. The houses you want aren’t in abundance at those price points but a condo in the mid 2’s is for sure possible

I agree the monthly fees on condos are a rip off but don’t have to do stupid odds and ends around a house. House wise, what would it be $400-500k to see what I stated. It’s kinda crazy how expensive houses are in Vegas but prices have went up everywhere in the US. I’m more looking as a 10-15 year plan. I wouldn’t mind moving to vegas if I could pay full for a condo and just work a side hustle like Amazon flex, Uber, etc in my spare time and play a little poker when I wanted. Sadly this it prolly 10 years or more away for me. Btw is renting economical in vegas? I looked at some prices and it doesn’t seem that expensive when you look at what homes cost. $1-2k / month for a solid apartment doesn’t seem that expensive if you ask me. I’m moving to a city that is much less desirable than vegas and will be paying a tad under 2k for rent. Think vegas would have a ton more to offer than Albany ny (prolly better dating options, nice weather, gambling, entertainment, etc)- only minus might be the fact it’s more expensive for dinner and entertainment than northeast

I would say your main problem will be that there are no 1 bedroom houses in those areas and probably very few 1 bedroom condos. If you really only need (and want to pay for) that much space, you're going to have to look into sharing space. I lived for two years with a guy who owned his 3br/2.5ba house, paid $600 in rent (in 2018-2019). If you want to own a place, you could be like him, take a mortgage, and rent out space to help with your payment.

Yeah, the Tropicana poker room was supposed to open the Friday of F1 Weekend. At the last minute they pulled the plug on it. It's my personal record for losing a job! I auditioned to deal there November 1st. On Nov 6th they sent me an offer letter and I accepted. On November 13th I got an email that " the Poker - Dealer (Part Time) opportunity has been closed, due to current business needs." So I lost the job about a week before I was scheduled to start it. I think when they were auditioning they expected the Trop to be open for at least another year. Maybe they pulled the plug when they realized it would be open for less than six months.

When I’ve looked at Zillow- some solid small condos in $200-300k range in vegas. Idk how the areas area as I assume they probably aren’t great. The strip or close by prolly isn’t ideal location to live. Like even 2 br small small condos seem to be semi ok value for vegas minus the hoa fee- I don’t think paying 250-300k for a small condo is that bad if one wants to live in vegas. I also saw a place that looked nice (was cheap kinda for vegas) but looked at reviews and people said stuff about roaches which was like WTF. I assume why it was cheap but it looked like a newer modern place. Guess reading reviews are big on condo properties or those communities.

It just depends. Quality of neighborhood can change block by block in LV. My first house in LV was at Rancho and Oakey. It was phenomenal, and the neighborhood south of us was also pretty good but the access from Sahara created a few more problems. We had basically no issues for the 6 years we lived there. Friends lived over on 5th place behind the Ocha Thai on LVB. Awesome little pocket there. They had a random dude in their backyard once, but drunk people exploring happens... Idk, just wasn't a dangerous area. Whereas go a block east of Paradise on Twain and hoo boy. Maybe some of these aren't the best for leaving a house vacant for months at a time, but my point is that there are some gems out there for sure. Look for solid working class neighborhoods where people want a sense of community and good neighbors. When you're looking your realtor should be able to help you, but realtors have to be careful about what they say because of fair housing policies. Ethical ones can't tell you about "the element" etc because of how that language has been used historically to segregate towns. But for value I would look at older neighborhoods in Green Valley (not GV South) and basically the I-15 corridor south of town. We have friends that live in a nice little neighborhood off I15 and Cactus just west of the 15. You'd probably never look there without someone telling you it's totally fine. IDK how I would navigate without some local friends helping, so I'd lean into the community pretty hard for where their friends live and just start driving the communities.

For awhile (in 2016 or so) I shared a 2bd 2ba condo with a friend, in the Flamingo Palms complex (very near the Rio) . It was less than a mile away from Bellagio and I often walked there when the weather was nice. I also regularly walked the mile or so the other way to go to the supermarket. Occasionally I even walked to the Orleans which was only a little farther away. Also was very close to the Rio, Gold Coast and the Palms, where I sometimes went to the movie theater. I thought the neighborhood was fine and I never felt unsafe or had any problems there. We also got a great deal on rent, I believe it was only $800 total. Would have stayed longer but the owner apparently wasn't paying his bills and the unit got foreclosed.

No. You get chances in Monopoly. Life is a totally different game. Been to a half dozen or so SB weekends all pre-pandemic. Poker rooms were packed with long wait lists. Assuming it will be the same especially since they are hosting.

EDIT I meant to say "LIVE" obviously 😀 How far would you recommend living from the strip if you play regularly? I bought in the Centennial area several years back and it's super quiet out here besides the random murder-suicide shooting that happened in the Oso Blanco area about two months ago. I think a 20-30 minute commute is fair coming from 95-S. Wife wants to live near Chinatown, but I don't know about that area...

What are some must see/do things in Vegas for a first timer (besides hookers and blow)? Or some great promotions/offers I should take advantage of. Plan on getting Caesars and MGM cards for that sweet $2/hr in poker comps. What else is there?

Don't get too excited about the comps. All the food is overpriced, and the MGM points are very limited in where they can be used.

Yes, but they can't be combined between venues and they're a pain in the butt. If playing at Bellagio, you have to ask someone to print a comp sheet and then take it to one of the few restaurants that accept them. There are many others at the casino where they can't be used. Same deal at Aria, but they can't be combined between different MGM rooms.

When it comes to slots I am clueless and a novice. Is there any rule of thumb for the optimal way (low variance, I assume, is best) to convert my slotplay at MGM properties into cash? I had a credit card offer that netted me $2000 slotplay, and I would like to max this out, even if it means 1 line at $1. I understand that this is not necessarily $2000 in cash, but what range should I expect to get from playing this through (1x) in the lowest variance way? (Praying for something more than about tree fiddy) Do I look for the payout percentage and then just mindlessly slam the lowest denomination, the fewest lines? Could be a job for wife if so. Thanks for any sage advice!

DDB $1 video poker is your safest bet. Could go for TDB which is more volatile but higher payout, so depends on what you want to achieve. Expect around 50-60% unless you hit a jackpot.

Whenever I get slot plays I play 8/6 or 9/6 Jack's or better video poker. Usually get 90% back.

Once all the summer schedules drop, Kenny Hallaert made a public Google doc of all the scheduled tournaments for the summer. I forget, but someone else went through the structure sheets and assigned something called an S score for them. Keep an eye on NVG, it’ll probably show up there.

Just saw chilrob’s post so yeah validated for poker players. Poker sessions? At MGM rooms the comp dollars should be available as soon as you clock out at the table, but they are completely separate from anything you earn with play elsewhere in the casino. Unless things have changed recently, what you can see online is only the latter - what you have earned from casino play. AFAIK there is no way to check how many poker comp dollars you have other than asking someone in the poker room to check for you. I'm not all that familiar with the Wynn system, but I imagine it is very similar - when you look online you are seeing casino comps, not poker comps.

Anyone have thoughts on good jobs that maybe have more part time type attributes that also come with some benefits in vegas? Any jobs you can work 3-4 days a week (maybe 30-40hrs) that would allow to play poker more but also have a job gig with some guaranteed income? My only thoughts would Uber/Lyft driver , Amazon flex, other amazon type delivery jobs. These also don’t come with benefits (flex and Uber/Lyft). I’m just considering making a move down the road and want a gig prior to making a move to just playing poker bc honestly don’t know if i could make income just from cash games per se (gotta be honest with myself here- I’m more of a tourny player). I have a solid gig in northeast USA with great pay + benefits. The problem is the transition yo this type of role in vegas would be very hard bc I work for a utility company in a union role. I continually look for openings at vegas utility but never see jobs that match up with my profile + I feel these union type jobs are hard to get into if you aren’t in said companies union. Honestly, I would probably be willing to take a $30-50k paycut to live in vegas with no income tax, nice weather, more entertainment options, and great poker mtt schedule in comparison to Northeast where I typically have to drive 5 hrs or take flights for mtt trips. Any thoughts here would be appreciated. My current gig has insane pay/ benefits so leaving is not ideal. I find it rough bc I get 4 weeks of vacation a year and just find it hard to get live mtt volume I want. Even if I lived in vegas and had similar gig- it would be much easier to pump up volume a bit playing dailies at Wynn on weekends or weeknights once in a while: aka I would like this a lot.

I left the tech world at age 45. Didn't have my full nest egg yet, but figured if I could make ends meet from poker, my investments would grow to where they need to be by age 60. At worst, poker would just be a 1 or 2 year sabbatical, then go back to the real world. This was 6.5 years ago. My advice would be to save and invest while you are young. Poker will always be there. If I get sick of poker before my nest egg grows, then I can get a temp or part time gig. No more corporate rat race for me.

All you can eat... wait lists towards the weekends can be more substantial than a line for the Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland. they probably get 'slightly' less impactful as the large field tournaments start sucking up all the dead money walking around... but they are still busy.

Yea there is no way I could pick up old career- if I was fired today- I probably would have to take a pay cut to get a job and might have to go into accounting which my college degree is in (I currently work in engineering/ design type work of simple projects- have a 2 year college degree in electric power technology my company paid for: also have a 4 year accounting degree that has not gotten any use :(. ). Yea before I move on, I would probably have a solid part time gig lined up and a lot of money in bank. I’m prolly going to sit on this for 10-15 years as it’s a bad life move if I fail. I might as well just visit Vegas on vacation now while still printing money at job. If I get bored in 40s, I can always move to vegas and maybe do Uber or amazon flex a few days a week and gamble other days and see if I can make poker a small income. Most likely I won’t do this with current job unless I have huge windfall and can buy a condo in full cash + have a big sum of money for a bankroll / safety slush fund,

would guess 3-4 miles. It is an easy drive on a well-maintained road. the only caveats are the road is narrow in a couple of places for a short distance and one small section (1/10 mile-ish) is not paved and subject to flooding. So if there has been heavy rain recently in the area u would want to avoid.

They have no information about a poker room on their website. I assume this is one of many that disappeared during the 'pandemic'. They have no information about a poker room on their website. I assume this is one of many that disappeared during the 'pandemic'. I was at Sam's town today and can confirm there is absolutely no poker room there

Not sure if this is the right thread, but how frequently does the 1-2-5 Big O at Caesars get up? On Bravo it says every Monday 6PM, but last few Mondays it has come up as 5 Card Omaha/double board bomb pot @ 5-5 stakes Coming to town with a few friends from overseas, and Big O is our game so we are super keen to play that somewhere. In our home games we play it no limit 😃

When I was in town in early January, it seemed like they were getting it going on Mondays and then on Wednesdays at CP, they were playing rotations of Big O, Double Board Bomb Pots, and Double Board Ultimate where the best high and best low using either board split.

Couple of questions about comp $

  1. Which poker rooms allow you to use comps towards tournament entries? I believe Venetian is one.
  2. Most places comps expire at the end of the year. Are there any out there with no expiration date?

by comps, do you mean rewards points for playing? If yes, I have used Station Casino & Boyd Gaming rewards points from poker recently that I know were more than a year old.

This is a Vegas-thread, so let's not clutter it with incorrect information. If you look at my posting history you will clearly see that I was in Las Vegas in January 2022; at a time where you had to be vaccinated to enter the US. Enough about that topic though - back to Vegas and the f**king Mirage instead.

Not sure why you are so upset. Pandemic is a fairly straightforward word: pan·dem·ic noun a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease over a whole country or the world at a particular time. "the impact of the pandemic caused loved ones to be separated and unable to meet in person"

If you come from abroad there is a $10k limit for how much you can bring in and out, fwiw.

This is not true at all. There is no maximum amount you can bring in, but if it's over $10K you just have to fill out a simple form. But that's not the same thing as a $10K cap or anything like that.

Do you have TSA Precheck? YMMV but I'd assume they wouldn't even make you do that if you did have it (judging by how often I've forgotten to take out a giant bottle of water in my carry-on or other things that should've been but weren't flagged bc I have it)

I got a random question for the Vegas experts on here. Which poker room is most likely to spin up a new mixed game table if requested? Coming with a big group of friends, and if say 5 of us want to play a crazy pineapple/Big O mix, where could we go that would start up a new table dealing this (ideally open to the public too). I know some casinos like Sahara are happy to cater for groups and these types of requests, but I think there’s not a big player pool there that would hop into the game. Caesars Palace say they’ll spread anything with enough interest… Keen for everyone’s thoughts!

I made my once-per-decade pilgrimage to Las Vegas earlier this week. Great to be back in the city! I cabbed from Harry Reid to Paris on Sunday. Taxi meter showed the flat fee of $25, so I gave $27 cash. When I took the exact same taxi trip back from Paris to Harry Reid on Sunday, the meter was showing a $35 flat fare. I paid by credit card and tipped $2 again. Here's my receipt. Any ideas why the base flat fare was $10 higher on my return trip?

A lot of places have $2.50 chips, usually pink. They're made for blackjack, like for when someone gets paid 1.5 to 1 on a $25 bet, but they used to have 7.50/15 LHE regularly in Atlantic City.

parisronRegular72 posts

Yea, I remember many years ago playing something that used those $2.50 chips, back then If I was ever in AC it was only Blackjack. Maybe it was on a boat, can't remember. I remember playing in 15/30 limit games in Baton Rouge, LA a long time ago, but don't remember if the SB was $7.50 using the $2.50 chips or just $7 or something.

The pink chip game was definitely a thing at the Trop in AC. I'm actually not sure what this is from.... pai gow?

KarmaMicro-Stakes Grinder7 posts
Posted Mar 27, 2024, 12:06 AM#163

Atlantic City's pink chips were originally made for the $5 blackjack games and similar. They weren't allowed to use coins at the time (dunno about now) so a 3-2 payout on a $5 blackjack would be one red chip and one pink chip. The Trop Poker Room Manager started the Pink Chip game in the mid to late 90's in an attempt to duplicate some of the action of the California poker games. In limit, more chips tends to lead to more action, but 3-6 and 5-10 games just didn't use a lot of chips. You were required to purchase chips from the dealer back then too, and the dealers commonly sold larger denominations to reduced the number of fills necessary. So 3-6 and 5-10 pots always looked tiny, while pink chip game pots generally looked massive in comparison.

Posted Mar 27, 2024, 1:03 AM#164

3-6 would have been fine if it was all $1 chips. But because the chips had to be purchased from the dealer's rack, you'd usually get at most one stack of $1 chips and the rest would be $5's.

I started playing in AC in the very early 2000's. I don't remember this as I always bought chips from the cage and remember thinking it was odd the first time in Vegas when they had runners. So. I always thought the dealer was saying that worm can't take chips from someone else's stack.

Same here. Worm grabbed some of Mike's chips right from the table, which is the equivalent of Mike taking chips off the table, which is certainly verboten. But then, for a brief time about a year ago, my local casino poker room started getting a little squirrely and discouraging players from selling chips to each other (e.g., the line for chips/cash-out was extremely long, so a guy waiting in line with $500 chips to cash in might sell them to another guy waiting to buy chips, rather than both wait in a 15-minute line). No one got in trouble, but they were warning you off of that. But they eventually dropped it.

It was that way in the mid to late 90's when I played there. I'm not sure at what point they allowed chip runners, but for several years I recall that the dealer was the only one who could sell chips. You could NOT buy chips from the cage, and floor supervisors were not allowed to handle cash. I recall one time where this led to an outraged player when he got seated in a game where the dealer rack was basically depleted. The floorman was trying to explain that the player needed to go over to a nearby dead spread and purchase chips from THAT dealer, then carry them over to his seat at the live table. The guy kept trying to hand the cash to the floorman to do it for him, and of course the floorman couldn't handle cash. I think the player ranted for at least an hour about how idiotic this was, and how much better things were in California or Vegas or wherever. But in that Rounders AC scene I think they're trying to highlight that Worm's action is violating table stakes rules, and that Atlantic City's gaming rules were very strict.

If you played it on a boat, it may have been in Tunica. I went there in 2010 and was told there had previously been a pink chip game at Harrahs but that it had recently died. 15/30 games just about always have a $10 small blind.

in another Vegas message board someone posted the question, "what's a 'never go there again' spot in Vegas' and why"? I was thinking about that. I've visited like 9 times over last 7 years. I've stayed at a dozen different hotels and never had a bad experience. I've seen over a dozen different shows and none were terrible (although LOVE bored the hell out of me recently). I've eaten at tons of different restaurants, no high-end places, but can't think of a single terrible meal I've had, can't even remember a bad server. I've played at a bunch of different casinos and actually the only place I've had bad experience is probably Aria (and I haven't played there since pre-Covid). kinda amazed at how people are so easily disappointed or upset or find things to complain about. vacationing in Vegas is better and cheaper than any other US metro area and I am always impressed with the hospitality.

well, I guess I thought the pool at Orleans was pretty s***y, and the tourneys there (even though the structure is good) feel like mis-reg-fests. also didn't like the Luxor pool because there is no shade and even when it is empty they won't let you use an umbrella without paying for it. so there's my negative opinions.

I thought the Cirque show "Ka" at MGM Grand was terrible; I literally fell asleep during it. Other Cirque shows I have seen were very good Imperial Palace was really terrible when I stayed there years ago, but it has been updated and renamed at least twice since then. The old motel building of the Tropicana was also pretty bad years ago - don't know if it is much better now.

Trop will be renovated or leveled soon, property was sold, not sure if finalized but will likely be the location of baseball facilities, stadium and or practice facilities or rooms.

I agree on Ka. Cirque shows are one of my favorite things to do. Every year I take all my nieces and nephews to whichever show comes to Dallas that year. I'll never go see Ka again though. It was the only one where I left thinking I could do almost everything the performers did, lol. It was more about the lights and sets than the performers. I don't like that.

I still have a few in Vegas to see. I've been to Mystere, Zoomanity, and Ka. Also the copycat at Wynn, I forget what it was called. I thought Mystere was great. It was a slow night and I was solo so they moved me to the very front to fill in empty seats. O will be my next one for sure. And Absinthe.

my main point was that I have really only had positive experiences in Vegas and felt hospitality was always good. I have had nightmare hotel stays elsewhere, and there are plenty of restaurants here at home that have had crappy service or my soup came cold or whatever that I don't want to visit again, but other than maybe an expensive price that brought lofty expectations are there things or places in Vegas you have done that were terribly disappointing? and if so, that's a shame because there are so many options that wasting time on a bad one is almost a tragedy

Absinthe tons of (super adult) fun. Must do, if you're not too prudish. With cirque shows, I always feel as if there's a storyline thread that I can't quite grasp. But I always enjoy the theatrics and athletic part of the show.

For context, I want to mention I'm staying at the Horseshoe. My first mistake was staying inside all day and never looking outside before deciding to walk over to Bellagio. That's not trivial, btw. My back has been giving me lots of trouble, to the point that I'm using a cane. As soon as I get outside, I realize it's freakin cold. I don't even have a jacket in my room, it's in my car. What the heck, it's been in the 70's all week, now it feels 50's. Then it gets worse when I get out from under the roof and see it's actually raining. But I've been stuck at that stinkin' Horseshoe table all week (not including the Circuit events) and I'm tired of the weird play coming from the promo grinders. I want to try somewhere else. I do eventually get to the poker room and get a 1/3 seat right away. I see that nothing has changed as far as the way the room is run. No chiprunners, you're expected to bring chips to the table. I've never played anywhere else that does this. It's really sad. The dealers are asking players to make change for them. And the dealers aren't what you would call sharp either. How can Horseshoe hire so much more competent dealers than the mighty Bellagio? Tiny sample size, but the players might make up for the other stuff. I didn't think a room full of promo grinders would make enough difference to not want to play there, but this trip showed me it was. Again, tiny sample size. At any rate, I did win money at Bellagio, and that should be my primary concern I guess. It's kind of disappointing the room itself is so crappy. Lots of garbage on the floor just like when I played there a couple years ago. Time to leave, it's raining even harder. Took a $15 cab back to Horseshoe, lol. It was worth it not to get soaked and sick.

I find Bellagio dealers hate their jobs and are pretty miserable to be around.

The Horseshoe promo grinder bunch is insufferable. Many checked down pots between buddies, and slow playing the super nuts to the point where you have to bet a river after 3 checks and then get check raised. Not sure if they are doing the weekly freeroll for total hours played, but that made it worse. I think the dealers are somewhat better for the Caesars/El Dorado company because they seem to treat their employees better, that goes for dealers in the pit as well. I don't play at Bellagio but there are better rooms to play profitable 1/3 in, just may not be the most popular ones.

I have never played at Bellagio. got on the list couple summers ago but the place was such a zoo that the wait wasn't worth it. also have never played at Horseshoe or Caesars. I am happy with rooms on the ends: Resorts World, Wynn, Venetian and Mandalay Bay (and South Point).

pig4billShark101 posts

All of those are reasonably nice rooms. Except I don't like the Wynn. The 1/3 guys are sharks, Bellagio players are much easier to handle. Small sample size though. I used to play the uncapped Wynn 1/3 a lot, but that was when I played in the Bay area a lot. I was used to aggression.

Like a reply above, I enjoy the other rooms, Venetian, South Point, Orleans, (have only played the mix at RW), Golden Nugget (downtown). I can't really say that any of the games are "more profitable", Bellagio has plenty of money walking around in the casino, and that can become poker foot traffic, but its most def stiffer competition than other places.

I played everywhere except Boulder Station. I'd say there's not too much skill difference at 1/3 between all the rooms, so I'd play somewhere you can buy in for $500+ if you think you'll be a top 3 player at your table.

The rooms really do vary a lot in terms of the players they attract. During my last trip, at the Wynn on a weekday afternoon, I saw a guy open for $8 in EP in a full table and won the blinds. Not sure I'd ever seen that in a 1/3 table in my life before. Whether or not that proves that those players are all sharks, it's not my idea of a good time.

As you can see, even opinions vary, I will add a variable in this as well which is "time of day". In my opinion, outside of the summer when wsop is in town, 8am-4pm is the nittiest time to play any NLHE in any of the rooms. I agree that the rooms vary a lot, and I believe the skill difference is there, but maybe better stated is the "player intention" for them even sitting down and being in the poker room is widely different from room to room. Some people are there to give their ss/retirement money away because they have nothing better to do, some people are there for entertainment and the rush of all ins and bluffs, some people are there for profit, some are there for promos. These ratios are laregely dictated by location and obviously table. I just know from years of traveling and playing in Vegas, there are rooms where regs/grinders are just sitting and waiting for the casual rec player to sit down so they can target them, and there are rooms where the casual rec player will fit right in unoticed (and maybe have an edge). The question in all honesty is whether you want to battle and win against better competition, or do you want the easier money in a softer game.

you are basing the reputation of the Wynn on one hand of 1/3 you witnessed? there are lots of hands across lots of tables across different hours across different days. if you've never seen anything like that any other time than you either don't pay attention, have a selective memory, or haven't played much

I've played a ton of hours in Vegas and California since the early 2000s. The anecdote was representative of the general experience I had, which is why I offered it. And yes, I don't remember ever seeing that happen before, with all the particular circumstances. Full table, 1/3, small (for live) open raise in EP. Even seeing an open for $8 is rare enough. It's usually some kid who is an online player who doesn't realize that he's just costing himself money.

I haven't been to Atomic Saloon and probably should. I always recommend Absinthe. It's just a great show. I went last summer and took my sister and nephew. I put them on the end seats (on purpose). The host of the show thanked them for taking time out of their D&D game to come out and watch the show. It was such an on point joke. I think the best act was Billy & Emily England roller skating. They still have them on the billboards, but I haven't seen them in a while. I do want to see Mad Apple. Seems like a hybrid cirque/spiegelworld show. I'm sure it wouldn't get much traffic, but a cirque/show thread always seemed like a good idea.

Mystère is more acrobatic. LOVE is loud bright and mostly dancing. I saw KA in like 2018 and liked it but the other two would probably be better for young girls. Blue Man Group is another good choice
