River Rock, Edgewater, Cascades, etc. Poker room in River Rock is usually busy and my usual choice. Any Vancouver regulars on 2+2? If there's another thread my bad but I believe it's worth it's own discussion seeing as the games here are always running. Fav room to play at in BC? Limits?

How are the Parq PLO games? I hear they often spread 3 tables of it now. Some say live PLO now is like NLH 15 years ago when most players knew nothing, every flop was 5-way, tons of action junkies, etc. Is that true?
What you just described is about 8 years out of date too. The games can be beat, but they're generally nothing like that.
damn Do most of the players know the basics, then, like at the local NLH tables?
Depends what you consider to be "the basics" At this point 80% or so of the players have been regulars for 5-10 years or more. You're making comments like you expect to see the plo games of 10 years ago. Not sure why you're so out of the loop. Do you not play? Basic errors are actually something you mostly see at the 1/3nl tables, not at the plo tables. The average amount of poker experience is much higher at the plo tables.
How often do Van casinos have greater than 2/5 nlh games going?

How often do Van casinos have greater than 2/5 nlh games going?
The straddle is often on in these 2/5 games that are always running somewhere, but 5/10 nl in Vancouver is pretty uncommon (maybe dead) and above 5/10 hasn't existed in 10+ years.

How does Grand Villa in Burnaby compare to Parq or River Rock?

How does Grand Villa in Burnaby compare to Parq or River Rock?
RiverRock: No need to go, only 1/3 and room closes at 3am. (24hrs on weekends) Parq: My favourite casino to go to, Nice place and environment is pleasant. Most people hate the weekends as it’s very noisy because there’s a live band but I personally do not mind it and enjoy the loud energy. Poker wise, it’s meh. Mostly 1/3 and one 2/5 game only (there’s a must-move for a short time) Games end early and you’ll end up playing 1/3 or drive to Villa. (PLO at Parq is very fun though! This game runs constantly) Villa: Reliable place as there are always games and weekends will have a 5/10 running. Usually it’s just 1/3 and couple tables of 2/5. (They recently started Omaha as well)

Thanks! I played at RR like 15-20 years ago and thought it was good, or maybe the best in Van. I've been to Parq a few times this year after Canucks games. It's always been good. Never been to Villa. Will need to check it out.
Any mixed games action currently in the Vancouver area casinos?
No. There's NLHE and PLO. Those are your options.
Parq adding 3 more tables for a total of 13 now.

... Also how is Starlight Casino these days for poker? I used to play there years ago late night when I live closer to there.
Pit & dealers are good. Wait times are incredibly short by Vancouver standards, especially Friday evening through Sunday. Action is decent. High hands are much easier to win due to fewer players. The room deserves to grow for those reasons. That growth could relieve wait times at other rooms, encouraging more recs to play all over the place. Overall, Starlight has been a good recent-ish addition to the Vancouver poker scene. More players of all types should check it out.

God I can't stand those ****ing tools who talk poker theory and GTO at the table. It is perfectly fine to learn and study of course, but to openly talk about it at a table like that just kills the fun vibe that poker is supposed to have for the recreationals and gamblers.Maybe that is just me. soo effing stupid, should be punishable by law, like 3 years or so ;-))) kills the vibe, kills the action, makes the recs not feel welcome ... 100 reasons
so, read a little through the thread, seems like the reviews of poker in vancouver are kinda mixed ... so my question: whats the best place to play in canada (never been), especially for PLO? thx
Right now, I think PLO is dealt at Grand Villa and Parq only.
[RANT] Why the $%@# are players are allowed to watch movies while playing online poker while also playing live poker? These players ruin the social vibes as they're clearly not present nor focused. They lose track of the action and need to be told every few minutes that it's their turn to act - sometimes multiple times in a single hand. There's no way to know if they are communicating with other players at the same table or using poker software to help them make decisions. And given their split attention, I wonder if they're even enjoying themselves. They're definitely not in a flow state. Absolutely NOBODY wants to be at a table where 8 or 9 out of the 9 players are doing this. That would be Poker Hell. But it seems like we're trending towards exactly that. And the card rooms are just letting it happen. I get that live poker can be boring when card dead with 3 calling stations on your left. But if a player cannot tolerate that aspect of poker, they should commit to some other activity and give their seat to someone who really wants to play, someone who won't delay the action 15 times per hour. CARD ROOMS: PLEASE PROHIBIT EXTENSIVE SCREEN USAGE DURING POKER GAMES. [/RANT]

Pretty weak representation here by the Van City poker players. Quite disappointing.
What's there to represent? There's a solid scene here. But not much in this thread inspires any posting. If you want your answers, come and play. Otherwise, what's the point of answering these questions. ?

I suspect that one reason for this is that nearly all of the recreational and action players have moved to private, invite-only games. Players there do not use nor want publicly available discussion forums such as this. In the casinos, the remaining players are mostly regs and rocks who are willing to put up with long wait times, high rake ($10+), a lot of short stacks (<$100), and little action. The poker scene in Vancouver has basically stabilized to that. With so little changing, I guess there's not much to discuss.
The rake is either 10 or 9 at pretty much all games, the wait times are generally not bad anymore, there's more rooms and they have more tables than when that was a major issue, if you use poker Atlas you'll generally not wait at all, I'm a regular and play every game and every stake and sometimes you have to wait a while for the bigger games but you can pretty much always get a 1/3 seat quickly, and stacks below 300 are actually quite uncommon even at the 1/3 tables. The average stack at basically all games is well over 100 BB's. Sounds like you don't play. Most players have multiple other players in their contacts and no reason to post here. The downtown casino has 148 reviews on poker Atlas. I only made this post to correct a few of your incorrect statements. 2+2 in general is pretty dead for most cities. In fact almost all of them. There's alot of poker in the area, 6 different poker rooms all within a 1 hour driving radius. Dealers are hit or miss, food options could be better, but all in all I think the poker scene here is much better than your making it out to be.
Nice to hear some discussion here! Carnivore, if you are saying that the lack of discussion here has to do with 2+2, is there any other site where Vancouver people can discuss poker and the poker scene at all? I've always been interested in meeting a solid poker wing man, for both online and live, that I can collaborate and learn/study/master the game with. I know people do this online alot, but I prefer the trust of the face to face interaction and knowing who I'm communicating with. It would just be nice to meet some real poker players around the city. 99% of the poker players I've met are home game recs who have never heard of 2+2 and only did online poker during the pandemic.
Like I said, most people have their 'poker buddies' that they text or talk about poker with. They know those people IRL and see them regularly at the casinos or often become non poker friends too. If you're a reg, you'll likely hit it off with someone and have such a friend in no time. There isn't really any motivation to discuss the scene with people who aren't in it.

Ok cool, but there is more to being a poker player than being a casino reg. I've been that before. But I've also been a guy who's played in regular home games with buddies. And the online world is still a very big part of the poker world in general. So I'd assume there are some online grinders in this city as well.
Moved back in to van recently after being away since 2008/2009. I play live at villa or cascades twice a month. It seems very reg heavy with regs playing musical chairs to find better tables. I see more soft play amongst cascades regs than I do at villa.

Great question! And would love to know the answer to this myself haha. In terms of bad regs, that was plentiful in the local home games I was playing at many years ago. In my experience home game players were the weakest group I've ever seen. Definitely some bad casino players too, but there are always regs and good players mixed in.
Based purely on a handful of extremely lol lowsteaks home games involving nothing but hockey/golf buddies, I think a bad casino poker reg would destroy that type of game. IME (yours my differ?), casino poker rooms are like 99% regs. Yes, the overwhelming vast majority of them lose (due in large part to the massive rake coming off the table)... but this also ain't their first rodeo either. GcluelesslivecasinopokernoobG

100% to that. Bad casino regs are just so much more experienced than the buddies at home games. They would crush the casual home game players. Where abouts do you play Gobbledey? I worked in Seoul and Hong Kong. I've pretty much played in most casino poker rooms in Asia and countless private games. Tournaments is booming in Asia, cash games not so much. The laws in varying countries makes tournaments possible by classifying poker as a game of skill, but not applicable to cash games. Best low stakes cash games (IMO) is in Phnom Penh as there's a good flow of Chinese players there. Phnom Penh - Chinese & tourists (a lot of frenchies actually), soft soft games Sihanouvkille - Would not advise unless you're well travelled, but games are soft. Need to be careful and spot who are house players in the casino as they will soft play Seoul - mainly Japanese & Chinese players (stereotypes matter, and yes from a blank slate Japanese players are very tight) Manila - local Filipinos likes to hit and run + recycle (min buy, double up, buy back in). Tagalog is spoken at the table and the pit bosses don't do anything to deter it Macau - Chinese and euro grinders, mid to high stakes players. Best to table select if a Chinese whale is playing

I've played exactly zero hands on-line. Don't want to spend my time away from work, where I'm staring at a screen, staring at a screen. Don't think it would be nearly as fun / engaging as the live version. Also don't trust any part of it. Hey man, I can totally understand how sitting and staring at a screen is sub-optimal use of your free time. It's probably the least enjoyable aspect of online poker. True I could be more social in live poker cash games. TBH I am mainly quiet and focused when playing live although I do engage in friendly convo when the occasion arises ans not to give off the impression of being a robot. I honestly don't bring up poker strategy in live casino cash game settings though as I don't want to make any declaration to my opponents that I'm a strategic and studied player. I generally try to show I'm just a casual player and gambler if possible. I honestly think those guys I see at a live casino poker table talking strategy infront of casual gamblers and people who are just looking to have fun playing cards, are complete douche bags, and lack alot of awareness. I'd never be one of those players myself. I'm definitely more open about chatting poker strategy in online forums or in a one on one setting with someone.
Hello to all my fellow Vancouver poker players and Happy New Year! May you get the flop, turns and rivers that you are hoping for! Just want to pose a question to you all? Do you have a poker schedule for the year that you follow? Personally, I don't have a set schedule. But I do follow an informal schedule. During the fall/winter months, I play online on Saturdays and Sundays. This goes from October until end of February. But during those months, if there is a nice day to get outside or if I have other commitments, I'll skip the poker, because life takes priority and poker is always there. I'll also play on a spring day as well if it's rainy, but that is less often. In the summer I like to get outside to the beaches or do bike rides or walks when the sun is out. My profession involves sitting at a desk and infront of a computer, so as much as I do enjoy poker, I know I always try to maintain life balance. I'm really into working out so I get that balance there. But I know I need to maintain more socializing to balance that aspect of life as well. Do you guys follow a schedule or just play when you feel like it?
The schedule is that I'm not gonna sit there if the game is terrible, and I'm not gonna leave if it's amazing. I'll also play more when I've got less other things to do, and play less when I've got other things do.

OK. A flexible schedule where you'll play more in better game conditions, less in bad game conditions and prioritize other life activities. Not structured, but I get the idea. I like it.
I only play live and attempt to get out twice per week (booking 103 sessions in 2025 so pretty much exactly on pace). I typically do one session during the week after work and one weekend session (mostly on Saturday). I fit the pokering around the family/etc. schedule. Thanks for sharing man. A targeted number of days per week and the hours are dependent on game conditions and you give more priority to the valuable things in life. Very nice man. Ya I'm sure live can be more time consuming to start a session with travel time and wait time compared to online. But ya, we all have different preferences with poker. Sounds like you are off work fairly early though if you can be home to cook dinner at 7pm. Unless all these places are really close together.

Does anybody know what is happening with parking at Parq given all the World Cup road closures? Also, is anyone else having problems with the Gateway Casino app (Starlight, Grand Villa, Cascades)? I can get to the "page" for each casino, but the pages show now tables.

I experienced the same problem about a ~week ago and at the time it looked like the whole system had gone down (as the local poker room had to revert to their old call-in system). The room has since gotten back on the system, but my iPhone (which is admittedly old, but has always worked fine since the app came out) now doesn't show any tables / is useless. Oddly / frustratingly enough, the app still works fine on my iPad. Lol @ technology. Gitisjustmeoristhereliabilityoftechnologygettingwayworse?G
Ugh. Why not just build a website app? Then they'd only have to design/build/secure/maintain ONE app instead of several. Nothing on my devices is working in terms of the Gateway Casino app: It's not showing in the app store and neither website for the app is working. Boo unreliable tech!
I thought I'd attempt to solve this problem on my iPhone by deleting the app and then re-installing it, but as noted above, it doesn't even look like this app exists any more in the app store. I noted this to one of the floors in our room my next session and he was totally unaware of it. Lol, so I guess if you currently have the app it may or may not work, but anyone new won't be able to get the app, and meanwhile the higher ups making the decision of making the app no longer available haven't communicated this to their staff (or is anyone actually aware the app is no longer available)? Related to the app crisis, I hadn't been to Parq in a year or so. Put my name on the list, show up 89 minutes later, and bingo I'm first up and it says seat open at both NL and PLO. I check in, go grab some chips, come back and the floor is looking at me like I'm walking around naked. I say, isn't there a seat open in both games? We are living in the future! Lol. If you're staying right downtown Vancouver then your best bet / closest room is Parq. If you're staying in one of the 'burbs then one of the other local rooms might be closer. Make sure to phone into the poker room beforehand, especially on a busy Saturday night, to get on the list and limit your wait time. I believe most rooms now have a 2 hour limit where you have to show up after phoning in but you should confirm that with whatever room you go to. GcluelesslocalpokerscenenoobG

Deep Cove is a little out of the way, your closest poker room might be Grand Villa in Burnaby. I've been doing some hikes on the north shore recently, if you're into that you might want to check out Quarry Rock for a nice view of Deep Cove. Genjoyyourvisit!G
Grand Villa or Parq, from Deep Cove the driving isn't much different, maybe a little faster to get to Villa If you're playing 1/3 hold'em, wait times aren't particularly bad anywhere now, if you use poker atlas it call in ahead, you are unlikely to wait at all really. Bigger hold'em games or PLO sometimes get backed up because they don't get as many tables, but likely you can play 1/3 while you wait. Parq on a Saturday night has a DJ playing retro hip hop music from 9pm-2am very close to the poker room. This makes the room very noisy. This may or may not be your thing, I would decide accordingly. Parq IMO has a brighter atmosphere, and is more lively. I significantly prefer the atmosphere there, although Villa probably is a better run room overall. They are both busy rooms, Parq is a little busier I think. Parq has 2/5/10 NL running every Friday and Saturday so if you're into a bigger NL game Parq is the place to find it. Both should have PLO on the weekend, of which the Villa game plays bigger. If you go to Parq, don't pay the exorbitant parking cost. Get a player card immediately at the guest services desk, and register your car. Then get your card swiped in at poker or any table game or probably slot machine. Parking is free for players. If by chance you still get a ticket, take it to guest services. Plenty of players regularly play at both casinos on the same night. You could easily go to both.

Deep Cove is a little out of the way, your closest poker room might be Grand Villa in Burnaby. I've been doing some hikes on the north shore recently, if you're into that you might want to check out Quarry Rock for a nice view of Deep Cove. Genjoyyourvisit!G
Wild. That hike is on my to do list. Thanks for confirming. The Villa sounds like the plan. Appreciate all the input

Bigger hold'em games or PLO sometimes get backed up because they don't get as many tables, but likely you can ... See full post
Thanks for the insights and suggestions. Villa sounds like the plan
Hello to all my Van City Grinders! What's new, other than the legend D-Negs posting on IG that he has been in the city? I'm feeling like doing a tour of Parq, Grand Villa and Starlight to test out the cash games. Would be interested in some tournament action too, but not if it is a super turbo, early shove fest structure.
Hey guys, just seeing if anyone knows of a good local poker coach who can help me with my online MTT game. Cheers
