New blog, just in time for the new year. Primrose and Harrier join forces this time, so you're getting two for the price of one - three, even, if you count our previous shared challenges blog.

I assume most people reading this will already know who we are, but for those who don't, I am Harrier, former mod of the Pokerstrategy forum, and specializing in non-Hold'em/Omaha games when it comes to poker, my main game is usually PL Badugi. My co-host Primrose is an experienced "grindette", who likes to play Hold'em SNGs and PL Omaha cash lately.

We are also both very sporty, with Primrose being a proficient swimmer and tennis player, and me having picked up tennis last year as well, and I also completed a bunch of swimming challenges. Just like with poker, I love exploring new things and I have competed in many different kinds of sports in the past, so you can expect a lot of new challenges in the future too.

In general, the two of us like to experiment, and you can expect us to try out a bunch of cooking recipes here, as well as mixed drinks, in my case, with me being our resident barkeeper. Primrose, meanwhile, loves to do gardening at home, and she especially likes to grow some chili plants, so we should see many updates about this too.

We are both currently living in Germany, and I also grew up here, while Primrose is originally from Hungary. The two of us are very good friends, and in addition to our chats, Skype calls and online gaming sessions after work, we like to meet up in person about once per month, so we may see a bunch of "Live Challenges" and similar projects on the blog as well.

So that's what you can expect on this blog: Poker of all kinds, sports of all kinds, cooking, gardening, mixed drinks, and a lot more. If you are familiar with any of our previous blogs, it's basically all of them rolled into one.

I am really looking forward to this, and now, I think I am going to give the floor to my lovely co-host.

Hi guys,

and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all!

I´m Prim and Harrier and I decided to blog as a "friends-couple". I had my own poker blogs, was playing PLO and SnG but unfortunately, for time reasons also due to lack of motivation, I do not play so much poker anymore, so that I decided to share this "friends-blog" with Harrier. As you can see, my friend already introduced me perfectly, there is not much more to say about me, maybe that I went from grinding SnGs to pure recreational player - that is mainly because of the harsh restrictions on us German poker players. I will be playing PLO CG, MTTs and maybe some Spins (like BLAST on 888 or Spin Overdrive on Partypoker). Do not have a BR at the moment, cashed it out, but I have 30€ left on Partypoker and 20€ left on 888. Let´s see what will happen with them ...

What I already have started is the HOT STUFF!

We got here different chilis and peppers I´m going to grow in 2024 - from SUPER HOT! to purely sweet.

The REALLY HOT STUFF:

  • Carolina Reaper

  • Apocalypse Red

  • Trinidad Moruga Scorpion (already got 2 plants hibernating)

The spicy ones:

  • Lila Luzi

  • "Feuerküsschen" (="Fire kisses", dwarf chili)

  • Aji Charapita

  • Hungarian Wax

  • Pimientos de Padron

  • Thai Dragon

  • Dragon´s Back

  • Zimbabwe Bird´s Eye (already got one plant hibernating)

The sweet ones:

-Sweet Banana

-Piquillo

-Sweet Pepper

So, got a little bit of everything this year. I know I´m early with the chilis, but I like to have some time buffer: Chilis grow slowly and if some of them do not germinate, I still have time to sow them again without loosing time (and harvest).

Looking good, Prim! Best of luck with those chilis, I am already looking forward to trying some of them - especially the extra spicy ones. ♠_wink:

And look, we may now even have our own theme song. There is actually a lot of stuff with that title, but this is the one that instantly came to my mind:

The two of us are still getting settled into the new year, we are going to reveal our plans and goals soon.

Oh, and to explain some inside jokes and memes to any of our newcomers: Primrose and I sometimes refer to the two of us as "Trolls", based on us being part of a once bigger group of people on the forum known for their lighthearted jest around many threads a few years ago. We are not actual trolls who like to rile up people, nor do we encourage this kind of behavior, it's all fun and games.

You may also often see Primrose being referred to as a puppy and me as a squirrel, also in some cartoons that I make. This too is based on an old forum meme, explained by Prim in this post (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3269963#post3269963) in our previous shared blog. We still sometimes use those as endearing nicknames for each other.

Another term you may see here often is banhauser (https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Banhauser), which is what Prim likes to call me whenever I get "unconventional" in my cooking, in a way she doesn't approve of. This goes back to a former fellow "Troll" once hearing Primrose calling me by the German word "Banause" (someone with poor taste) to comment on my latest takeout meal in a Skype group, and this "Troll", who is a native speaker of French, later trying to write the word from memory on the forum, thus coining a new term.

You can also check out this post (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3270090#post3270090), where I link to the exact origin points of those memes in the forum.

!!! NEW NEW NEW!!! in 2024!!

And with all this clarified, I can now announce the breaking gardening NEWS in 2024: I did not only rent a garden this year, but also a greenhouse!! Yaaaay!

As you guys can see, I´m growing my own veggies and I´m mostly independent of the grocery stores, I use to buy fruits and those veggies which I cannot grow, at the local farmers shop (I live in a small village). Besides chilis and peppers I grow tomatoes, salads, carrots, beetroot (well, that´s the plan), zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli, bush-beans, "spanish salad", and this year NEW! will be kale! I´m just a freetime farmer, not a pro, but trying to improve my skills and knowledge. I work as a freelancer, so I can decide myself, when I take time for the gardening, the sports, the housework and poker. Normally, I use to do the gardening or the housework during lunchbreaks. In winter, I also use to do the endurance sports (running, swimming) and the strength training (crossfit) during lunchbreaks as well, mostly, one day gardening/housework and one day sports. Tennis practice is in the evenings. This winter again, got tennis practice on Friday evenings, which prevents me to play poker on Friday evening, but during spring/summer-season, this will change. At the moment, I think I will be playing poker on Saturday evenings, the rest has to be figured out.

Thank you very much! We hope to be back at the tables soon, and apart from that, we have plenty of other plans too, but more on that later.

New Year's custom at Harrier's: Instead of joining in with the big fireworks after midnight, which we typically just watch, we do our fireworks at 7 PM on New Year's Day, in honor of my father who passed away at around this time on January 1st, 2018.

After that, it is usually time to reflect on my own goals and plans for the new year. And now that we have a brand new blog, which also goes a little beyond poker, the time for this is better than ever. So what are the plans?

Poker

Starting with poker, you may have read on my old blog (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3446431#post3446431) that 2023 was not exactly a successful poker year, with the exception of Open Face Chinese poker. In general, I didn't play a whole lot at all. Before setting any specific goals, I suppose I should just aim to just get out of that slump.

How exactly do we do this? Well, for OFC, it is exclusively technical problems that are holding me back. My poker client, which is an obscure crypto site known as SwC, has simply stopped working some time in December. I suppose a re-installation will be required, but I was having problems with the uninstaller, while a newly downloaded setup file yielded a Windows Defender warning, which may or may not be a false positive. I have had my break from this game, now I would like to get back and get this sorted out, so that in the future, the only issue impeding me should be terrible traffic.

The meat of the grind was always supposed to be MTTs and SNGs on Pokerstars, however, and these games have been on a hiatus now too. Main issues are bad traffic at SNGs, and difficulties to fit the MTTs I like into my schedule. I will probably have to do a lot of de-rusting now as well. Figuring out a good way to re-introduce poker will be the big riddle to solve for now.

Shall we set some goals, with that many questions left unanswered? Let's do it for reference, but only combined profit goals across all formats. $500 will make me consider it an okay year, $1K will make it a good year, and playing for monthly withdrawals again in addition to that makes it an excellent year at that front.

Sports

This was the big success story of 2023. Remember the Troll Challenges? All three DLRG (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Life_Saving_Association) swimming badges, a Bronze lifeguard badge, a successful 5K meters run after dedicated practice and the German Sports Badge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Sports_Badge) in Gold were more than satisfactory achievements. Where do we go from there?

Even though my lifeguard course was not such a great experience overall, mostly thanks to an inconvenient schedule, I would like to shoot for Silver this year. This one will be tough, especially because my performance in the Bronze was only barely sufficient in some areas. Still, let's give it a try, but with a different schedule. An alternative would be the Snorkeling badge, for which I am now eligible after getting the Bronze lifeguard badge. It's what it says on the tin, you are getting trained in the area of diving and snorkeling in order to expand your skill set as a swimmer and lifeguard. I would like to get at least one of those badges in 2024, ideally both.

The German Sports Badge, still known as the "Trollympics" here, shall be back for its second "Trollympiad". Let's get Gold once again, now that I've shown how achievable it is. Repeating this will not necessarily be as easy as it sounds, though... I may have gotten lucky with the wind in the 100 meter dash and the sling ball throw events last year. Nevertheless, Gold is definitely the goal, and I would also like to beat at least two of my PBs from last year.

As for other sports, tennis will continue this spring, and I intend to stick with it for at least one more year, I can review my plans afterwards. I would also like to add some new sports, however. Right now, I have plans to get started with karate, I am still in discussions with the local dojo about when new courses will become available, and how to carry on from there. If everything goes well, I would like to complete at least one belt graduation exam this year, if given the chance.

Maybe, just maybe, Primrose and I, or at least one of us, can compete in some kind of public race? A 5K run, 10K maybe... possibly even a half-marathon? Or beyond? ♠_o: I don't know... but if we get a chance, this would be a very cool additional achievement.

What else?

Primrose and I will stick around on Duolingo, also continuing some of the language-related challenges we have set for each other, there are some creative projects I would like to get into, some new spreadsheets to prepare, and of course, I hope that things will continue to go well at work, where I will be looking to get some more convenient work hours for me, which may require some experimenting. That's just some of the other stuff, my main goals will be poker and sports-related, I think - but let's see what else 2024 brings.

Most importantly, let's all just stay safe and healthy, 2023 was a bit of a doozy, and I think people from all kinds of worldviews could find plenty of reasons to be concerned about the upcoming year too. As long as we are all sitting here safe and sound on New Year's Day 2025, peacefully reflecting on what went wrong and what went right, I believe we will have a lot to be grateful for this year, right?

With that out of the way, I will continue my best wishes to all of you guys. Primrose has already shared some of her personal plans, maybe she will have some more goals to add later.

More housekeeping: I decided that it's best to include a copy of the linked drinks recipe list and Burgers around the World final ranking from my sig in this new blog, so that I can link to a thread that is still active. The drinks recipe list can be expanded in the future, the other one will only be included for reference because it was such a big series. We may eventually see some kind of follow-up, though.

Just a moment...

Greenhouse is mostly good. You can start in January. Only problem is heat and water in summertime

Thanks for stopping by, DonWolfo. I'll leave the gardening to Prim, I think, even though I am still considering planting some veggies myself this year. But I am excited to see how her gardening will go this season, I am usually the first person to receive updates on that.

Out with the old, in with the new

Primrose and I are still getting "settled in", she actually had to start working again today already, while I myself have one more day of vacation left tomorrow, then it is back to the grind for me too. It has been a very enjoyable Christmas break for me, much better than last year's, when there were still so many loose ends left to be tied up.

I have used the time to prepare my poker spreadsheets (and other personal ones) for the new year, which tends to take a while. It doesn't help that 2024 is a leap year, meaning that I can't even copy any of my old calendar sheets one-to-one. To my surprise, I noticed that I had already made one of my longer-running spreadsheets "leap year proof", by having my February statistics formulas always include the cells below February 28th, no matter if they are empty or not. It doesn't seem to cause any problems with the data, so I implemented this in my newer poker spreadsheets now too.

MTT tracking, OFC tracking, Mahjong tracking and OFC stats should be ready now, though I think I accidentally deleted some formulas in the OFC tracking one, but they should be easy to recover. MTT stats still need some work, and then I have to prepare the SNG and Satty stuff too, and the combined stats. I should be able to finish this tomorrow already, if things go well, and then I should finally be ready for some poker again too.

I plan to play my first games of 2024 on the weekend, and I think Primrose would also like to play already. Let's see how this new year will treat us at the tables.

Apart from that, we are actively preparing for our big sporting plans, Prim even already hit the tennis court on New Year's Day, and our pre-season workout schedules are already underway - so as you can see, the two of us are wasting no time to get out of "vacation mode".

A very important sentence!!!

Very important besides:

"Я хочу кофе" (= I want coffee)

"Я xочу десерт" (= I want dessert)

Guess those are the most important sentences for me to learn!

Other important phrases for "that" time of the month:

Conversely, I'm still calling BS on that correction:

The Russian language omits both definite and indefinite articles, so including "the" is up to interpretation, but my sentence made sense as it is.

Both of us are still struggling a little with our Russian lessons, which is the language we are focusing on the most, but our "Finno-Japanese" language challenge will be carried over from the Troll Challenges blog. You practiced with those hiragana yet, Prim?

And aside from that, I guess I will have to get back to that song eventually too...

Already a sporting challenge? Yes, in fact, I started this one during my vacation already - right on Christmas, even, on December 25th in the afternoon.

This is not the first time that I have attempted this program, I even did a failed attempt (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3319216#post3319216) as part of our "Troll Challenges" before. The problem was that there was always something interfering with it. Last time, it was that physically demanding job I had, and yes, I still have a physical labor job, so it could still be a bit of an issue... but not as much anymore, I believe. It shouldn't be as demanding as what I did back then, at least I know that I won't have to unload any truck containers anymore.

Here's a link to the program (https://hundredpushups.com/), feel free to join in. Anyone can join, regardless of age or personal fitness, and do it anywhere. You don't even need any equipment, nor do you need to download anything. The idea is to spend a couple of weeks - six according to the standard plan - to prepare to eventually do 100 consecutive good form pushups in one go. You do this by scheduling three sets of smaller workouts per week, with rest days in-between.

I am currently in the middle of week two. You are normally supposed to do an initial test starting out, and depending on whether you can do less than 6, 6 to 10, or 11 to 20 pushups, you would use a different column in the program to fit your current level - if you can already do more than 20 pushups, it is recommended that you skip the first few weeks entirely and start at a later point.

I would usually do 10 pushups as part of my pre-work exercise routine, so I skipped the test and put me in the 11-20 pushups column... but I thought that the going was pretty tough already. See for yourself (https://hundredpushups.com/week1.html), if you can do 11 pushups max, you are already supposed to do sets of 10, 12, 7, 7 and 9+ reps on day one? That's ambitious, at that level...

Well, I made it through day one on Christmas with that set, but the follow-up after one day of rest had me collapsing. I decided to simply drop down one column, for people who managed to do 6-10 pushups on the first test, and then still consider Week 1 done after completing the Friday workout. I followed the same column for Week 2 (https://hundredpushups.com/week2.html), and... that's where we are right now, I made it through the second workout day. Next one will be Friday, after a day of rest.

Let's see how it goes this time. Being able to do 100 pushups in a row by the end of winter should put me in an excellent position to pass any of my other athletic challenges this year.

Look what finally arrived in the mail yesterday:

It's my International Lifesaving Certificate for completing the Trollwatch challenge (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3442560#post3442560) in December.

It was always a little awkward to translate these things without knowing about any international equivalents, but the certificate has some information to help us out:

Let's take a look at the part for the Bronze course I finished, complete with its stamp and all (the name of my examiner and parts of his signature have been removed for the sake of privacy). As we can see, the Bronze badge or its equivalent is called "International Junior Lifesaver" by the International Life Saving Federation.

Taking a look at the empty slots for the Silver and Gold badge, we can see that they would be called "International Lifesaver" and "International Pool Lifeguard", respectively. Maybe we will shoot for the Silver this year.

What is missing is an actual badge - and I hope that I can still get my hands on one, just because I think it is cool. My certificate is valid either way, and I can now call myself an International Junior Lifesaver.

It looks good next to the other badges I earned last year:

But fair enough, be sure to keep us posted about your workout progress, Vorpal.

The pushups are still going fine, I'm done with Week Two now. Honestly... I'm not sure if I ever got that far. There is a reason why I started this during the winter vacation, when all of my regular sports are on break. I am supposed to do another exhaustion test this weekend, doing as many good form pushups as I can in order to determine which part of the program I shall follow in the next two weeks. I might do it tomorrow, but I don't think I should push myself too hard, or else I will be too tired by Monday.

I may also slowly start preparing for another sporting challenge, because I plan to finally go for another swim - I haven't been swimming since a few days before Christmas, when Prim was visiting and we were going to the pool together. I will take it slow, but I already have my swimming challenges in mind.

One of these challenges would be the Trollympics this summer, where I am aiming to get a "legit" Gold in a stamina event this time - I had to submit my DLRG Gold swimming badge for "extra credit" last year instead, which also counted as Gold for stamina. I can get Gold in this area by achieving a time of sub 15 minutes in the 3,000 meter run (Trollympic record is 16:47 (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3424482#post3424482)), or by getting a time below 19:15 minutes for 800 meters of freestyle swimming (Trollympic record is 20:30 (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3411568#post3411568)).

I had achieved this time last year by starting out with a few lanes of crawling, and then mostly doing breaststroke swimming after I got too tired, finishing with another crawling section as a final sprint. I was pretty new to this kind of swimming back then, but I have gotten some pointers this fall both from Primrose herself and from a swimming instructor at a local club where I showed up twice as a guest, so my technique should have improved a lot by now, and I should be able to crawl more lanes. Being able to crawl for the full 800 meters should give me an excellent shot at cracking the Gold time.

But yes, I also plan to go for a higher lifeguard badge some time this year. Let's take a closer look in our next post...

Going for Silver?

I have already started looking for the next opportunity to go for the Silver lifeguard badge, apparently the equivalent to being an "International Lifesaver" by ILSF standards.

There are supposed to be courses in mid to late February, not sure if I want to attempt them so soon, but I am currently in email contact with the local group and I am awaiting their response. Whether I take it then or at a later point, I can already start preparing. The requirements are (differences to the Bronze badge (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3418547#post3418547) are marked in bold):

Theoretical part

  • Passing a nationally standardized quiz about the following subjects: Respiration and blood circulation, hazards in and around water, assistance in case of bathing-, boating-, and ice-related accidents, avoiding strangleholds, rights and duties when providing emergency assistance, using life-saving equipment and the tasks and activities of the DLRG.

  • Having passed an officially recognized first aid course within the last two years.

Note: This needs to be done separately.

Practical part

  • Swimming 400 meters in less than 15 minutes, including 50 meters of front crawling, 150 meters of breaststroke swimming and 200 meters of leg whip kick back swimming without using the arms

  • Swimming 300 meters in full clothing in less than 12 minutes, with subsequent unclothing inside the water

  • Performing a jump from a height of 3 meters

  • 25 meters of distance diving

  • 50 meters of transport swimming - pushing or pulling, in less than 1:30 minutes

  • Diving from the surface of the water three times - once feet first and twice heads first - retrieving two 5 kg diving rings from the bottom of a 3-5 meters deep pool within 3 minutes

  • Displaying abilities to avoid strangleholds and escaping neck chokeholds from behind

  • 50 meters of transport swimming with an embracing technique (for people who may try to resist the rescuing) in less than four minutes, using two different techniques and switching halfway through, both participants being in full clothing

  • Demonstrating the ability to use life-saving equipment

  • A combined exercise involving the following steps without any breaks in this order: A 20 meter swimming approach, diving to retrieve a 5 kg diving ring halfway through at a depth of 3-5 meters, then dropping the ring and escaping a stranglehold, followed by carrying a partner for 25 meters, bringing them safely ashore and performing CPR for 3 minutes

Having to use equipment is new, but shouldn't be an issue. I also already took a practice version of the theoretical test a few times and discovered that many questions from the Bronze quiz were recycled one-to-one, with a few new questions thrown in, which aren't too hard either.

Other than that, it's largely the same, but a little tougher, with some stricter limitations. The swimming times are less trivial, but should still be doable. Transport swimming and swimming in full clothing now also have a time limit, and this could cause some problems, because I don't think I did too well there last time, though I caught on somewhat. Also note that the transport swimming with an embracing technique, used for unresponsive or uncooperative swimmers in distress, will now have to be done in full clothing too... this could prove to be difficult.

While our exam had us diving in a shallower part of the pool, we practiced diving in deeper waters early on, and I had some problems with the feet first version. Maybe I can improve, but it is hard to practice on my own time, as my local pool isn't deep enough. 25 meters of distance diving is also tough - and still an ongoing challenge for Primrose. I can do it on a good day, and I have also learned some better techniques in my Bronze course. I think I can pull this part off, at least.

Finally, the combined exercise is a lot more complex, now involving everything that is considered part of a typical rescue, all the way to bringing the victim ashore and performing CPR.

This is what may be in store for me this year in the water. What can I practice already? Well, I can start with the distance diving for the Silver badge, and of course the front crawling for the 800 meter freestyle swim. Improving my swimming in general should increase my odds when going for the badge too, of course.

I think this will be my plan for my future (possibly weekly?) trips to the pool: Start by going for a 25 meter distance dive, possibly going for a few extra meters after reaching the end of the pool, and later just trying to keep crawling for as long as possible, trying to add a few more consecutive laps every time, until I can hopefully eventually complete my 32nd lap for the full 800 meters.

I did my Week Two test (https://hundredpushups.com/week3.html) today after getting up, before my trip to the pool. Depending on whether I can make 16-20, 21-25 or 26+ pushups, I would follow a different column in the program for the next two weeks. Failing to make 16 would mean that I would have to repeat one of my previous weeks and try again at a later point.

I counted 20 decent pushups, and then noticed myself getting shaky. Thing is... I counted twenty, but was that my real amount? My policy is that whenever I'm doing reps of any kind during my workouts and I start to have a feeling that I may have lost track, e.g. not being sure anymore if I am currently on my 13th or 14th pushup, I would always take the lower amount, and in case I was wrong, consider the extra reps I have to do as a penalty for losing my count. Kind of like when biathletes have to go for a penalty loop after missing their target.

It happened again here, so I'm not sure if I really just did twenty or maybe a couple more... and considering that the cutoff point is exactly between 20 and 21, this is a little inconvenient. Which column should I take now?

It's a judgment call, both choices have their own risks. Taking the lower option means that I will have it easier, but that I may run into more difficulties later on because my workout was too soft, possibly forcing me to repeat a week. Taking the higher option means that I will have a tougher workout that should prepare me a little better for what is to come, but also carries a higher risk of failure, possibly forcing me to drop down a column once again and potentially throwing me off-schedule, or in the worst case forcing me to drop the entire program.

Given my history with this, I think I am going to value consistency over speed of progress and go for the lower option, which assumes that I really did complete twenty pushups. Therefore, my workout program for next week will be:

Monday

10, 12, 7, 7 and 9+ reps

Wednesday

10, 12, 8, 8 and 12+ reps

Friday

11, 13, 9, 9 and 13+ reps

This is actually less than what I had to do last week... but once again, I would like to make sure that I can keep going, rather than trying to make more progress right away. Let's see if this decision pay off in the future.

Looks like many people over here made a resolution to go swimming more often in the new year, or maybe it just happened to be a busy day. Plenty of traffic at the local pool today.

The left side of the pool is usually intended for the more casual swimmers, including families with children who may often like to just splash around a little, while the right side is for those who want to swim proper laps, typically also at a decent pace. When I arrived, both sides where pretty busy.

Normally, I go to the lap swimming section right away, but those columns of ambitious swimmers would have made my initial distance diving difficult, so I started with the casuals, where I also had to wait a while to at least get a somewhat decent opening, then I just tried it. The result was essentially an obstacle diving course. Now, this won't be expected of me in any of my future badges (though the Gold lifeguard badge has a version of it, where you need to pick up a certain amount of diving rings while going for a seemingly impossible distance).

I figured that as long as I am diving deeply enough - only possible in the later section of the pool, which is why I had to wait for an opening - I should be able to avoid all those folks who like to have a little chat with each other during their swim. I still somehow managed to collide with an old lady who was swimming in a pretty much vertical position, with her feet near the ground. She may not have even known what hit her - literally.

Despite this, I arrived safely at the other side of the 25 meter pool, and even managed to do an underwater turn there for the first time to keep on diving, though I had to surface almost immediately afterwards. Tougher badges may require me to go beyond the 25 meters, though those will surely take place in a standard Olympic size 50 meter pool, so no pushing off the other edge for me.

Looks like the distance diving is going well, but my crawling could use some improvements. My first attempt had me going for four consecutive lanes (100 meters) and I later tried again and went for six in a row (150 meters). Probably a personal best at that point, but still not very good.

Ah well, it was the first proper swimming trip for me in a long time. Keep it steady, and we may see some progress soon.

Here, the public indoor swimming pool is still closed but will re-open next week. My Friday-evenening-tennis-training will start also next week. So, I can start my swimming workouts and FULL sports schedule next week, but I haven´t been completely without sports this week either: Played tennis already at January 1st and two crossfit-workouts are behind me. I do not have as many sports goals as Harrier, as I am a competitive tennis player and my goal is just: win at tennis! Will start competing in February until May, during summer I will only do practices in the evenings (due to my fair skin and last year I got diagnosed with Actinic Keratosis, a pre-cancerous lesion which was removed) and compete again in September and October. That´s the plan. And my biggest goal is: NO INJURY!

It would still be cool to have you join in the "Trollympics" this year. Maybe you can find a place where you can go for the German Sports Badge in your vicinity. You can surely have someone take your time in the swimming events, at least - and you still have two ongoing challenges about that anyway.

But yes, the most important goal is "NO INJURY!" for sure.

This may be about to change. I finished my last poker spreadsheet last night, and now I am ready to put some numbers in there. I haven't dealt with the OFC client yet, but I should be able to play my first SNGs later today.

By the way, I did get LibroOffice to crash once, when I had my big Combined Stats spreadsheet open with many cross-references to be updated, and most of the other relevant spreadsheets being open in the background. It still has a much better track record than OpenOffice, this is the first crash that I can recall, despite heavy use.

Primrose is currently dealing with a minor infection, I believe, so she will still sit out this weekend. I think she had to postpone one of her workouts too. It's nothing serious, but of course, we are all wishing her to get well soon. She will be fully recovered in no time.

To briefly get back to sports one more time, I stumbled upon some other possible challenges yesterday, which may or may not be available to me. I will have a look around, and as soon as I know more about them, I might start practicing and keep you updated about my progress.

Probably I may postpone my tomorrows Monday-workout to Tuesday, it depends. It seems to be a very mild stomach flu. Let´s see how I will feel tomorrow.

Well, this is it, the first poker hand of 2024, for both of us. It was a Courchevel hand, I signed up for a bunch of SNGs, and this happened to be the first one to open.

In the end, I placed 2nd in that one, and also played a Five Card Draw on the side. This one bubbled, continuing what has been a bit of a theme last year.

It was fine in order to get my feet wet after the long break from the tables. SNGs were always supposed to be mostly a side game anyway.

Badges!

Do you like badges? You certainly know that I do, at least I like going for them, especially the swimming ones. Maybe I watched too much Pokémon around the turn of the millennium, or maybe I just like to prove myself. Whatever it is, Primrose and I are always up for a challenge, and those badges are a good one.

If you have been following our previous blog, you surely remember how I went for the DLRG Bronze, Silver and Gold swimming badges, even together with Prim in the case of the final one. Recently, I got the Bronze Lifeguard badge and I have set my sights on Silver - except I'm still missing the actual badge, I only got a certificate for my troubles.

Our instructor said that the badge can be ordered somewhere. So far, I have had no luck with it, and a local pool lifeguard pointed me to an online store with a wide selection, which, however, also doesn't seem to have the badge that I am looking for. I am currently in contact with them about it.

Now that I have had a look, though, let's take a moment to check out some of the other badges that are out there, for other people who like to take on some challenges. Most of them are not available to me for various obvious reasons, but let's have a look anyway.

The Basics

Ah, yes, the Seahorse. This is certainly the most common one of the swimming badges, every German child is expected to take it at one point, usually shortly before starting school. Maybe you even remember one of last year's Troll Trivia questions (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3405694#post3405694), where it was revealed that I did this badge not just once, but twice as a kid, thanks to an awkward misunderstanding.

The Seahorse certifies that the child (I think there is also some adult equivalent for people who never learned how to swim in their youth) is capable of swimming under supervision, by demonstrating that it can swim a 25 meter lane, retrieve an object from the bottom of a shallow part of the pool, and showing a basic knowledge of safety rules.

In order to be considered capable of swimming unsupervised, one would have to take the standard Bronze swimming badge as I did last year (I had done it before too, but I wanted to start over from scratch and re-took it). It is not a strict requirement, however, and many people are safely swimming without it - though there are certain fields of work that may require you to have the Bronze.

The Early Ones

Intended as a step before the Seahorse, these badges for the youngest among the early swimmers are supposed to give a fun little challenge for children to get used to the water. "Starfish Stella" does not require any actually actual swimming skills yet, but has the little adventurers demonstrate that they can breathe out under water without swallowing anything, float for a bit in shallow water, and dare to briefly dive down or jump from the edge of the pool. All under strict supervision, of course.

Not sure what the "Frog badge" requires, but I think it is similar. A little floating, breathing out, and maybe doing your first few swimming strokes without going for a certain time or distance.

The Intermediate Badges

These badges are for young swimmers who already passed the Seahorse, but may want to have something in-between before tackling the real Bronze swimming badge and possibly beyond. "Pirate Pimpi" has the young sea dogs swimming freestyle for 100 meters, diving for a distance of 5 meters, and diving down to recover a "pirate booty" (that's what the certificate calls it) from a depth of one meter. Yarrrrrrrr! ♠_grin:

"Trixi the Seal" is also known as the "versatility badge". In order to earn this seal of approval, one would have to do 25 meters of breaststroke swimming, 25 meters of either front or back crawling, dribble a water polo ball for 15 meters, do a head first dive from the edge, dive for a distance of 7 meters, and show some confidence by performing a little spin in the water. A nice preparation for some of the "proper" badges, maybe, with its wide range of required skills.

Obviously, I am a little too old for those badges, and the challenge wouldn't really be there. But it is still interesting to see what is out there for the little ones to provide some motivation during their early swimming career. I hadn't even heard of many of those badges before.

There are a few more age-appropriate badges out there, however, and we will be taking a look at them next...

Going the Distance

Those wicked looking "Skull and Crossbone" badges, which is what they are actually called, are not official badges, but they are supposedly still out there. The DLRG, which is the organization behind most of the other badges, is allegedly even prohibited from taking those tests, and bathing facilities who do offer them often have strict guidelines that whoever attempts it must have demonstrated before that they are up to the task. What's the big deal about them?

Well, they are also known as the hour-long swim badges, and that's what they are about: Swimming continuously for one hour for Black, 1.5 hours for Silver and two hours for Gold - yes, "Black" replaces Bronze here, I guess it's the standard version. The caveat: It has to be one continuous swim, with no breaks whatsoever, not even for touching the other edge of the pool and turning. This makes them pretty much impossible to attempt at a public pool during normal opening hours, as you would have to swim in a big circle. You would be better off going for open waters - or making a reservation.

What really made those badges fall out of favor ever since the 70's, however, is that there have been several cases of hypothermia among swimmers who took on the challenge, not to mention that they need to be under constant supervision during their attempt. Nevertheless, those badges still exist, and some people are still taking tests.

Will I ever get the chance? If I will, I would be tempted - hypothermia be damned.

Beyond the Iron Curtain

These very cool looking swimming badges were available to people in the German Democratic Republic back in the day. Looks like they handed out proper medals, unless those are just showpieces.

It seems like they were mostly meant for school children up to 9th grade, which should make them comparable to the DLRG badges, but I assume adults could take them too. There was a basic level, possibly their version of the Seahorse, and Levels I, II and III beyond it, like the DLRG Bronze, Silver and Gold badges.

The information on the certificate shown above is incomplete, as it refers to a separate table of swimming times, but we can see that they require 100 meters of swimming for the basic badge, and then later give the choice between either demonstrating two different swimming styles for 100 meters each (100m and 50m for Level I), or swimming 400 meters in one style (200m for Level I). Level II also introduced time limits.

As we can see, they don't require the versatility of the Western badges, with none of them asking for any kind of diving, for example, but instead focus on quick laps, so they are based more on performance rather than on safety. As for the time limits, I can only go by the 100 meter times posted on Wikipedia, which would be 3:30 minutes for 4th grade and below, 3:00 for 5th-6th grade, 2:45 for 7th-8th grade, and 2:30 for 9th grade and above.

Earning one of those badges would certainly be cool... but I am a few decades late and on the wrong side of the fence.

Cannonball!

Yes... I found those badges in the shop, and they certainly caught my attention.

The popular "cannonball" jump is colloquially known as the "arse bomb" in Germany, which explains why those badges feature a human pair of buttocks on them. Now, if this is not a badge for the Trolls, I don't know what is...

You may not be familiar with Lele Pahu, which is a Hawaiian practice of jumping into the water while making as much of a splash as possible, for which there are even competitions by now. There is also Lele Kawa, which is about making as little of a splash as possible.

So yes, this is essentially the "Cannonball"-badge, but having a look at the requirements, they mostly seem to be about standard springboard diving, though I don't know all of the lingo in there. I see the Gold requires you to do a double front flip with a 180° spin ending in an open cannonball from a height of 5 meters... which sounds like a splendid way to get myself killed.

Honestly, though... going for at least the Bronze sounds intriguing. I have never done a lot of springboard diving, but that just makes it all the more interesting. Unfortunately, I have no idea at all where to go for this badge, which seems to be a fairly recent invention.

I am in contact about this too, so... maybe we will have me take down the Bronze Buttocks eventually after all.

Those were all the badges I wanted to cover today, but there are a few other ones that may just be within reach - and as soon as I know where to take them, I will fill you guys in.

It even has decent traffic by non-Hold'em SNG standards, it seems comparable to Five Card Draw, on some days possibly even better.

I personally enjoyed it more than 5CD during my short session today, but that might also have something to do with the results. I remember all too well how brutal Courchevel can be when it wants to.

Until I can figure out a decent MTT plan, which should be really challenging, it's pretty much all just messing around.

I've been baking my spelt bread last two days. Even the kids love it!

Easy: 350g water, 500g flower (50/50 and biological), 7g dry yeast and 10g seasalt.

Mix it with a spoon, let it rest between 12-24h and bake it. Very tastefull!

Planning to add some enzym to create a bigger volume, but that's an extra.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to point that one out, I usually don't like to be that kind of guy... but then again, I thought that maybe this wasn't even a misspelling and Zeezout is just a little avant-garde in his baking? Who knows, I sometimes like to cook in an unconventional way too.

Also, you're way ahead of us, Zeezout. Cooking and possibly baking is indeed supposed to be a major part of this blog, but we didn't get around to it at all yet. And my old Baking Challenge (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3289322#post3289322) from January 2022 is still ongoing, even though I didn't get back to it in any way after my first attempt. Maybe I will eventually find the time to pick it back up...

I used this opportunity, however, to ask Primrose today whether we would like to continue with our "Surprise Menu" over here, and if so, whether we still like to make it a weekly thing. She was foursquare in favor of it. In fact, she wanted us to start right now - so here we go, it's back after the Christmas break:

What does the Cooking Wheel have in store for us this week?

Spoiler

Ugh... Well, it could have been vegan...

To clarify, "Veggie" just means that we have to make a vegetarian meal, it doesn't necessarily have to involve any actual vegetables.

Well, let's get this over with... For those of you who weren't following last year, we need to make one dish with the theme we rolled by the end of the week and post about it here. Simple stuff.

I only point out the funny ones! I´m not a native English speaker either and a couple of years ago, Vorpal pointed out my "fuzzy eater" I always wrote "I´m a fuzzy eater" instead of "I´m a fussy eater".

And your Hungarian "okád" (= "he/she pukes") instead of "ország" (= country) was a blast!!!

Typos and mixing up phonetically identical words can easily happen to native speakers too.

And oh dear... that "okád" thing... It happened here (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3433899#post3433899) a few months ago, when Prim and I were meeting up at my place and I still had this challenge where I was supposed to learn that Hungarian song by heart - another challenge that is still underway.

As Prim pointed out, the word I was looking for was "ország" for "country", and as I was throwing around different words in an attempt to find that one, I once said "okád", and Primrose suddenly burst out laughing. It turned out that "okád" was an extremely rude Hungarian slang term for "throwing up".

Believe it or not, there are some languages out there with which I am struggling even more than with Hungarian... but I think we will get to them. Looks like we do have a surprisingly high amount of content on this blog after all. It's all good as long as we find a way to smuggle the odd SNG in.

Man, I should really get back to that baking challenge some time... I'm almost ashamed to admit that my vegetarian meal for this week's "Surprise Menu" will once again involve store-bought bread.

Dutch and German really are very similar. I once took a very enjoyable house-boating trip in the Netherlands, in the area of Sneek (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sneek) in Friesland. I was surprised that almost everyone there seemed to be able speak in German with us, even the staff in Chinese restaurants. This may have something to do with the region we were in, though.

Still, the languages are similar enough that whenever I'm reading a Dutch text, I can usually get the gist of it. Like this Wikipedia article (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sneekermeer) about the Sneekermeer where I went boating, which is currently not available in English or German.

Veggie Suprise Menu

When it´s -4°C outside I get a little warm and summer feeling by eating African food. At least the African sun and the heat are in my bowl. As I wanted to make something with legumes anyway today, I found that red cabbage in the fridge - which was a big MUSSGO! So, then: Let´s make a nice, warm, hot, African peanut stew:

Even though I don´t have all the veggies anymore which are required for that stew (Hey, it´s January folks!), it tasted yummy! Made it with chickpeas, beans, corn, red cabbage, tomatoes (own grown ones as sauce, which was frozen down), some canned tomatoes, peanutbutter and different herbs. Really gave me a little summer feeling.

The current weather makes me long for spring too... Temperatures below 0°C, and still clear blue skies. All the drawbacks of winter without the charm, and my beat-up car is in almost permanent "Crazy Vaclav" mode in this cold weather, limping uphill at 60 km/h.

Nice looking stew, though I would have preferred it without the sweetcorn, or at least with a lower amount of it.

My own Surprise menu will be following shortly...

Harrier88Regular53 posts
Posted Jan 9, 2024, 7:53 PM#64

Here's the deal: I noticed a craving for Subway-style sandwiches the other day, so I got myself some of those sandwich rolls at the store, intending to make a nice, meaty sandwich with a bunch of different cold cuts.

Then we rolled "Veggie" in our Surprise Menu spin later that day, and since the bread easily makes for two servings, I thought that I might as well make another vegetarian version to take care of our spin.

I may have told the story already about me going to a tiny Subway store in my first semester at university, and noticing the so-called "Veggie Delite" on their menu, with a price that was lower than any other sandwich there. Being on a tight budget like all students, I decided to go for it, expecting a nice veggie patty or so... and then it turned out that "Veggie Delite" simply means "nothing" - except for the salad and veggies that you would get anyway with any kind of sandwich you order. I figured that "Veggie Delite" must have been one of the fanciest words for "nothing" ever since the invention of the decimal system, and it has become somewhat of a running gag among Prim and me.

Let's make a version of it at home, then. We just prepare those rolls, and fill them with some typical sandwich veggies. Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, olives, and then add some salt and pepper and a little mayonnaise later on.

That's it, we got our own "Veggie Delite" sandwiches at home. Filled with a bunch of veggies and a whole lot of nothing else.

Primrose6789Regular62 posts

Actually, I think the term "veggie delite" became a running gag when we were playing "Overcooked" and one of us forgot to put the meat into the burger or something like this, or the sausage in the hot dog? I don´t know, but I remember us joking "that was a veggie delite".

Sports Update

First of all, the pushups are still going nicely, I think it might have been a wise decision after all to go for the lower column, especially because the final set on each day is open-ended anyway, so I can do as many of them as I still can at that point.

But what about the big badges hunt? Here are the updates from the last few days:

Silver Lifeguard Badge (International Lifesaver)

The next course after the scheduled date in February would be in November, so it would make sense to go for it right away, even though it won't give me a lot of time to practice. I will have to take an additional first aid course, but I am allowed to hand it in up to three months after passing my exam, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Also, the person in charge told me that it should be no problem to get me a physical Bronze badge on my first day if I pay for the cost of material - very nice! This alone is a reason to join.

Snorkeling Badge

I finally found a place where I should be able to take it, about a 30 minutes drive away from me. Currently, they don't offer any courses, but they plan to do one some time this year. I guess I will just keep checking back every month or so.

Lele Pahu ("Cannonball!") Badge

This one seems to be an innovation by that shop, making it another unofficial badge - but I still think it would be cool to go for it.

Where I can take it is still anyone's guess, but I have been encouraged to have a phone call about it, maybe I can find out what I need to know.

I already asked Prim if she would be willing to do it together with me. She gave me a hard pass.

The Secret Badge?

There is another swimming badge that I haven't mentioned before, also not in that big list I posted the other day (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3447783#post3447783). It's an official one, but not part of the DLRG lineup.

Again, I'm not sure who to contact about this, but I will phone around and hopefully know a little more about it soon.

As you can see, the Trolls are as determined as ever, and once again, the only thing that can stop us is bureaucracy.

Last year, the hottest chili in the world, the Carolina Reaper, was unfortunately a fail. First, the seed didn´t germinate and I had to order new ones. Those germinated very late. This one is a very tasty chili: sweet and quite hot!! The fruits have a very nice purple color. Our nice landlady gave me some of them and after I tried them, I decided to collect the seeds and include the Lila Luzi in my gardening-plan.

Dragon´s Back

The seeds were a Birthday gift from Harrier. It´s a spicy one.

Thai Dragon

This one is also a spicy one and a was a nice Birthday gift from Harrier as well.

Sweet Pepper

Decided to plant more sweet pepper this year. Those will be transferred to my big garden outdoors, when they´re big and strong enough (in May).

Oh, Prim's chili plants are seeing the light of day already. Good stuff. I'm especially curious about the Reaper, of course.

I would have liked to play some more poker this week, but I was just really tired on most days, to be honest. I guess that's just January.

Normally, Primrose and I would have met up once during this time, possibly a week ago. We like to call those "anti-January-blues" meetups, and we had a habit of doing one of them during the first one or two weeks of January in most previous years. This time, it wasn't possible due to work. I probably could have arranged something with my employer, but Primrose is self-employed, so it is not that easy for her - if there is work to be done, then that's just the way it is.

We keep moving on through those cold and dark winter days, and we stay busy, as best as we can. In fact, Primrose is looking sharp on the tennis court right now as we speak. Meanwhile, I have been able to clear up some stuff, and I am happy to announce that last year's Trollwatch series can now be back for its sequel, because I have officially signed up for the next lifeguard course starting in mid-February, shooting for the Silver badge.

It should be a lot more fast-paced this time, with only two meetups scheduled, which instead are supposed to last pretty much all day. Conveniently, they will take place within walking distance of my home, in the pool that I like to visit on Saturdays too:

An additional part of the practical exam will have to take place at a later date in another nearby town, at the place where I did my Gold swimming badge together with Prim last year (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3414752#post3414752). My hometown's standard pool is not suitable for some of the things we will have to do, mostly because it is not deep enough or doesn't have any diving boards, so we have to do some stuff at that other place.

It won't be easy, especially with only two big lessons to prepare. Taking a fail here is definitely a possibility. But let's give it our best, as always. I can practice tomorrow already. My first lesson is scheduled to start on February 17th.

Here is the full list of requirements once again:

Theoretical part

  • Passing a nationally standardized quiz about the following subjects: Respiration and blood circulation, hazards in and around water, assistance in case of bathing-, boating-, and ice-related accidents, avoiding strangleholds, rights and duties when providing emergency assistance, using life-saving equipment and the tasks and activities of the DLRG.

Prim´s sports plans for 2024

Well, yesterday, Homer and I had our Friday-evening-tennis training and we practiced singles. Wanted to compete in women´s singles next Saturday, but unfortunately, I can still feel a mild pain in my leg. I´m ready to play singles just for fun but I don´t think my leg will make it through 2 singles competitions. Therefore, my this years sports plan will be the following:

February 2024: Competing only in doubles! (indoor)

March 2024: Competing in doubles, maybe trying one singles competition? (indoor)

April 2024: Should be ready for singles competitions. (indoor and outdoor)

Mai 2024: Competing in singles and doubles (outdoor)

June - August 2024: no competitions - focus on swimming, avoiding the (midday-)sun, tennis trainings in the evening.

September 2024: Last competitions (singles/doubles, outdoor)

October 2024- December 2024: off-season. Focusing on Crossfit and endurance sports.

I have a new mascot for Primrose. His name is Roberto and he is born in Germany. He is living at the moment near of our house (10km away). He has problem with his radar. He was flying to Denmark instead of Tunisia. Now he is living here with a colony of crows. First birds of his family since 200 years in Germany.

He could indeed be one of us. I have discovered before, during various of our trips, that Primrose and I have an about equally bad sense of direction.

The difference is that I tend to be more likely to admit defeat and consult maps or ask locals for directions, often both. Prim instead often likes to decide on instinct which way in the correct one and then continue along that path filled with optimism... even if it turns out to be the opposite direction of where we wanted to go. Once we finally realize that, Prim typically likes to say "Hey, but we were almost correct!". Without any hint of irony, by the way.

I imagine if we were trying to take a trip to Tunisia ourselves, we would somehow end up in Vorpal's attic. And Primrose would still be like "No, I think I know that window. Keep going! I'm sure we're almost there."

Like I said, I'm just as bad, but less optimistic. Honestly, though, would our trips be as fun as they are if we always knew where we were going, Prim?

Definitely a good decision to sit that one out. I know you are eager to compete, but let's be reasonable, you know how easily an old injury can start to act up once again if it hasn't fully healed yet, and then it can continue to cause trouble all year long, much like last year.

Much better to take a rest until you have completely recovered, and then go on to kick butt for the rest of the year.

Pretty cool plan. I hope I can also add a few proper competitions of sorts into my schedule. My plans for 2024 are crammed with sporting challenges, but most of them are only on an individual level, just trying to pass certain tests or exams, or something like that. It would be nice to also add any tournaments of some kind, in whatever sport.

We will all be rooting for Primrose, of course.

Much less traffic at the local pool today, thankfully. I also arrived maybe an hour earlier than last week, maybe that's just a better time.

As a result, I had no obstacles when I went for my distance diving, and managed to turn around at the opposite end of the pool once again. I continued diving in the other direction for maybe five additional meters this time? Diving a distance of 30 meters would even be enough for the Gold badge - if I also manage to pick up at least eight out of ten diving rings scattered along the way, which would make things a lot more difficult.

I noticed a smell of blood right after surfacing, however, just like last week. I ignored it that time, but noticed one of my nostrils feeling a little numb all week long afterwards. Maybe those underwater turns while being low on oxygen put a little too much strain on... possibly some kind of vein? Perhaps it has something to do with the pressure under water? I have no idea, Primrose is the scientist here, I always sucked badly at biology.

Anyway, I figured that from now on, maybe it's best to just dive my standard 25 meter lanes to make sure I can consistently do them, that's all I need to do for Silver. Anything longer than that would best be done in a larger pool.

My front crawling is still atrocious. I can't believe I still get puffed out after 100 meters. Sure, it's better than one year ago, when I couldn't do it at all, but those are not the standards I should have.

With that much space at the pool, I also decided to practice my leg whip kick back swimming, without using the arms, just like I need to do for the Silver exam. I swam for 150 meters because I erroneously thought this is how much I need to swim in the test - turns out it's 200 meters, 150 is for the breaststroke, I thought it was the other way around.

This kind of swimming technique is essential to learn for lifeguards, because it's what you use when you rescue unconscious or resisting people. You need to do back swimming to make sure that their head is always above the water while you carry them, and you can't use your arms to swim because you are already using them to restrain and carry the other person.

Doing it for such a long distance now - and it wasn't even the full 200 meters yet that I will have to do - I noticed that this kind of swimming is surprisingly tiring, with nothing but your legs doing all the work. My time limit in the exam will be 15 minutes for 400 meters in total (50m front crawling, 150m breaststroke, 200m back swimming without the arms). That would be 56.25 seconds for each 25 meter lane - generous, but not trivial. And apart from that test, I will also have to carry another person this way, for 50 meters, in full clothing, also under a time limit. It will be part of the big combined exercise at the end too.

My front crawl may suck, but it won't become relevant until this summer or so, when I take part in the Trollympics again, and possibly go for another badge. I would be well-advised to mostly keep practicing that back swimming for now. There's only a little over a month left until my course starts - let's get serious!

It´s Party(-Poker) time!!

Yes, finally. Prim hit the tables and played MTTs on Partypoker. As I´m playing just for fun at the moment, I decided to play a Free to Play around the Clock freeroll, a 0,33 $ 7-max turbo Holdem and picking up four cards by playing a 0,22 $ PLO8 tourney. Haven´t played poker for a while, so let´s take it just slow and easy and have some fun! Felt like playing those cool MTTs on Partypoker and still have around 32 € left for fun-play. I indeed had fun and those are the results:

Free to play around the Clock: busto - jammend AQo (11 BB) into KK

0,22 $ PLO8: Card-dead and busto with strong draw: flushdraw, nut low draw, gutshot str8 draw - but nothing came.

0,33 $ 7-max No Limit Holdem: FINAL TABLE - and 3rd place!! busto with A9s vs 33 (lost the flip)

So, a happy nice first session in 2024! Saturdays and/or Sundays are the best days for poker - unless I´m competing.

Jingle bells,

Hold'em smells,

Primrose poops her pants.

MTTs

make FTs

and the donks get crushed like ants.

Hey, jingle bells...

Great to see you back at the tables! We considered doing another versus challenge already, but we will have to figure something out first. It's not easy now that we are scattered around different rooms, and new regulations require us to wait for a few hours after our session until we can play at another room.

Maybe we will see some poker from me too this weekend. At least we have both made a token effort by now. Let's see how long it will take until things truly get rolling again.

And may I remind our readers of my original Final Table cocktail (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?postid=3182344#post3182344) again?

40 ml of coffee liqueur, 30 ml of brown crème de cacao, 20 ml of Frangelico, shaken with ice and strained.
