Hi guys! I'm a former SNG grinder haven't played online in several years, getting back this year playing mostly bounty tournaments on GG Poker. What confuses me is how much calling and shoving ranges change due to bounty? Hand in question: Middle stage of tournament, near the bubble but not there yet. Villain has stats 32/21/5 ATS 100 over 135 hands. So this means he's raising/shoving every button and small blind. He has 15BB, I have 50BB. He has solid bounty on him but nothing crazy. It folds to villain in small blind, he shoves. I have 56dd what now?
First step. Calculate what the bounty is worth in chips. Add that to the pot. Say, for argument sake the bounty is worth 5BB. You are calling 14 to win a pot that is worth 35BBs. You would need about 40% equity in this spot. Get yourself a free range calculator, like this: https://openpokertools.com/range-equity.... (https://openpokertools.com/range-equity.html) Put your hand and Villain's range in and see what you get. I gave Villain a 37% range, and we are about 38.5% vs that range. If he is shoving ATC you are about 43%. One of the things I like to do in these spots when analyzing after the fact is solve for what range he'd need to be shoving for our call to break even; here it is about 69% of hands. Do we think Villain is shoving more/less than this? Then we call/fold base on that assumption. The above doesn't take future game into account, nor ICM. In a bounty tournament, it is vital to cover other stacks so that we can access other bounties. If the rest of the table has 15ish BBs, calling and losing here won't cost us much. If they have 35-50 BB stacks, losing the ability to get other bounties can be quite bad. In a different scenario, where you have say 20BBs and there are a lot of 30ish BB stacks, you can call off much lighter, as now you will be able to access bounties that you couldn't before this hand. You said middle stages of the tournament, so there is some ICM, but not much. For more see Dara O'Kearney's book.
Thank you. Great analysis.
Hi Friends: I played a monthly $350 local donkament yesterday and I have a bunch of hands to review. Here is the first. My image is tight aggressive - opening a lot - but getting respect nonetheless. It seemed like everyone knew each other and were regulars at the club. LEVEL 3 (Early Stages) Hero min open KsTs from UTG w 160bb 8 handed. I am using the min size to keep the SPR low - as about half the stacks were playing 30-60bb behind. LJ calls, BU calls, SB calls, BB calls. KdKhAc - 11bb SB leads for 3bb. BB calls, Hero calls, LJ folds, BU calls. KdKhAc (6s) - 23bb SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets 15bb, BU shoves for his remaining 44bb, SB folds, BB folds, Hero? BU was a wealthy retired fellow, chatting with the dealers, showing off his house he just bought in Phoenix, was playing TAGGY and seemed to know something about pokerz. I'm guessing mathematically it's a call - but if I am going to be exploitive it's a fold obviously... If it were IGGY I'd be snap calling - but with his stats which likely looked something like 16/11 ... I might even fold online as well... anyway - was my first "tough" hand of the donkament lol. Personally I don't like making hero folds especially when I cover.
Not loving it but could be a lower suited king which makes sense. Aces don't make sense nor do pocket sixes. Our kicker is right on the line, definitely calling KQ/KJ and folding the lower kings. Wealthy retired fellows can show up with bluffs from time to time, we might have chop outs, and we're getting almost 3:1. Think it's a sigh call

Thank you LNF ... do you consider KT a low king? Also why are you eliminating 66 from his range?

Who overcalls an AKK flop after a bet and two calls with 66? A player who is "TAGGY and seemed to know something about poker"? You really think so?

Hero has bled down card dead and has 6.5 bb in co. There is a utg2 limp and it’s on us. Jam or fold QTo? There is a bb ante too. Nowhere near min cash.
Thanks, DT

By lower I meant below KT. We are beat a lot by KQ/KJ but don't think we can lay it down considering odds and the overcall pre.
Your preflop read is that you are getting a lot of respect for your raises. Yet, you go to a flop 4 ways after an UTG raise... The bottom line here is this. Villain has Kx almost always. Is he calling preflop with Kxs? Then you have a call (but still not by a lot, K5s implies all KQ/KJo, IMO). If he isn't calling those hands, and he shouldn't be...this is a fold.

Hi Guys ... We are still in the re-entry period long before the money - about 66 entries in a weekend warrior $350 buy in weekly event. It's nine handed. I have KK with about 55bb in LJ; I iso (5bb) an ep limper. The BU calls and both blinds call. 5 ways with 25bb in the pot: QT4r ... I bet almost big - 20bb - probably calling if I am shoved on - there are some wealthy recs at this table who can easily pile with AQ, T, 89, expecting to rebuy if they're behind and don't improve. I plan on shoving pretty much any turn except maybe an ace - depending on who calls my cbet here - and only the button calls. This player late regged and was decked from head to toe in Aria and Bellagio gear. I wouldn't be surprised if he's one of the wealthy recs. Well, OTT that pesky ace drops completing the rainbow. I checked and this fella shoved - putting me all in - rather quickly. I have I had about 30bb behind lots of play left in the tourney not even having made it to the first break. I folded.

Too big on the flop. Multi way, and with an spr of 2, no need to bet 80p. I’d bet 10-12 BB. Turn fold seems fine. He isn’t betting worse for value. Not too many bluffs and he might have shoved the flop with some of them.

AQ and TT could certainly take this line. (Even though we block KJ and it would take two somewhat loose calls to get there with it, the line makes sense to me with KJ, too.) I'm not sure AJ calls that flop bet given the sizing and the remaining stack behind.

What's our position? These 5x ranges don't need to get defended much. While you saw 22 on day 1, I think it is less likely to be a hand like that, and more a pair slightly higher than yours. If we are UTG+1, I'd just make a tight fold and tell no one.

MP on a 9-handed table. Folding is obviously better than calling. Raise can only be one size right?
Actually, I’m probably calling. Interested what a solver does vs 5x pre.
How much does he have? Jamming 40 BB here seems like an overplay to me.

Play poker I guess. I mean he can’t just go ham, what’s out range for calling 5x, obv we have a bunch of 99-JJ, KQ/AQs some AJs, but we have a bunch of traps too imho.

Yeah, I guess we can call and see how it goes. We’ve got position and we’re likely to have a very easy decision on the flop. At the time, in possibly not the best state of mind having had minimal sleep the night before, I decided it was all of the chips or none. So now we’re at call>fold>jam? We don’t have any non all-in raises?
I don't like 3 betting here because what's our plan for the flop? Fire a cbet vs his strong range on boards containing an overcard, which will be most of them? Slow down and check multiple streets? 99 is barely strong enough to 3 bet pre against an UTG raise, never mind the 5x, which is presumably a very tight range. As the above poster said I don't even hate folding since we have a huge raise + awkward hand + just doubled up the hand before, so can take a breather. But I'd probably call and hope for a decent flop.
I think I just fold unless he has a history of making goofy large raises like this from UTG with weak or marginal hands. But working from my own live experience, you're basically hoping it's AK/AQ and not TT+. I mean we're not gonna see him turn over ATo or 66 or JTs at that size, I can't imagine. The specifics of the tendencies you've talked about would help here. Do you ever think he shows up with a worse pair or an overcard hand he would raise/fold?

If BB is a nit or a solid reg then yes, if unknown just fold imho, too many times in this spot you get some kind of spaz call from AT/33 or something and gg.
5 off the money in a $1.5k buyin live MTT. Hero has 20bb utg, 7 handed. Hero opens to 2bb, MP ( approx 40bb) calls. SB (>50bb) raises to 8bb. SB just moved to the table so no reads. There are at least 5 stacks shorter than Hero. While hero tries to just play well and not worry about the stakes, cashing here would mean a lot. Jam or fold? Alternatively, one poker buddy said that they would open jam this spot. I don't like this play, but I'm open to discussion on it.
What's your hand?
Since you didn't give a hand, I'll say that I am jamming JJ+ and AK. Being '5 off the money' is incomplete; are there 100 players or 20? That matters as to how close the bubble is, and also how valuable a double would be. If there are only 20 players left; then we aren't especially close to the $; we are also close to the big payouts. That would expand my jamming range. In a very large field, neither of the above is true, and I'd tighten my range...

I’m with the buddy that jams, but as played I think it’s a fold. At best you’re flipping (SB shouldn’t have any AJ or lower) and although a double up would have some value, playing on with 18BB has more.

Thanks. What's your reasoning for the open jam?
Open ripping AQos utg off 20bb is fail. I like the raise/fold if ITM is our first priority. I mean tbh if ITM is super important to you no one can stop you from folding your way there.
I think AQo is too good to fold facing the squeeze play from the big stack. I would consider 4 bet jamming. Occasionally we're going to run into a monster but the big stack may just be putting pressure on us. Our stack is a little large for the open jam, though I don't hate it. I'd probably do it if I didn't feel I had a skill edge. Overall, I don't think we should think about the money yet as 20% of the field has to bust before we get there. I hate ending up with a micro stack and min cashing because I've played too tight in these spots.

We’re seven handed, utg is MP. So yeah, maybe 20BB is a bit too big, but we’re jamming a hand at the bottom of a range that is the top 6 or 7%. Raise/fold is fine.

Thanks. What's your reasoning for the open jam?
When the ICM is heavy, everyone with decent stacks is disincentivized from flipping; a jam can fold out mid-pair type hands that could 3-bet jam over you and force you to fold. (If you're really lucky, you might get an AKo fold from someone who thinks you'd never do this without a pair, but I wouldn't bank on it.) I think UTG/7 is too early to do it with, though. Too many people to get through, and thus too high of a chance of running into a premium hand. (It's still not super high in the aggregate, but with your lead over the shorter stacks and 7 people to get through, I still think it's too risky.) As played, I'd just fold-- we have 0 fold equity at this depth. As I calculated it, assuming BB ante, SB would be calling 12BB to play for 32BB-- 2.66:1, 27.27% equity needed by cEV, and as a healthily covering stack villain doesn't face much ICM pressure against you. Villain can't really fold anything they 3-bet with, and there's no reason yet to assume he's 3-betting light enough for that to be good for you. Plus, there's always the very slim chance MP was trapping. It's not fun to raise/fold this, but as the hand played out, I think it's okay.

Do you mean posting guidelines? Read the FAQ. upswing.com has a great hand converter where you can take your hand history text and convert it for these forums. If you have a really basic question just go to the beginner forums - very user friendly over there. Don't post results. End your thread at the decision point. I'll post an example (which is what I was gonna do anyway 😉
Hello - since I won a seat to the WSOP ME this summer I'm upping my game. Trying to play more and condition my patience and time it takes to sit on my ass for long periods of time w/o loosing my mind lol! I have been going up to the local card room and playing their old man coffee morning dailies - typical 20min/20k double digit morning buyins. 150bb effective (1st or 2nd level) Vil is a seemingly tight passive type - he open raises 3x from early position and I am in the CO w KcJc - I call... I have other passive players on my left so I am confident that by calling I will not get a squeeze behind, and if I do then I can comfortably fold or call depending on how the opener reacts to the squeeze. ... everyone folds. OTF 2 PLAYERS - Kd 9s 3h: Vil bets 30% pot; I call. OTT 2 PLAYERS - Kd 9s 3h (4h): Vil bets about 60% pot; Hero ? please keep in mind I have no idea if he's going to give up OTR. My feeling is if he is gonna 3barrell I should fold here right? Not knowing - call and reevaluate OTR yes?
I think you need to call and evaluate the river. If he barrels on the river you need to give up (unless sizing is ridiculously small). But you need to put him to that test.
You're 150BB deep with a strong top pair; seems like an easy decision to call and re-evaluate the river.

Thanks guys - yes I called ott and folded when he bombed otr and showed his AA lol. I see a lot of local regs fold TP ott here which I find confusing because I would imagine we have implieds with our 5 outs ... just wanted a quick check-up on that. I think we are all in agreememnt here
I don't think this warrants an actual thread: Ok just busted out of the MSPT CPC Prelim 42/1325 ... the hand: 9c8c otb with 5bb. Blinds going up in two minutes which is gonna take out half of me wee stack. There's two limpers and I shove with this in mind thinking how nice it'd be to triple up seeing that I have zero fold equity (and behind when called or flipping vs <77) and I'm on the life raft approaching Niagara Falls. Only the bb with the big stack calls! and I couldn't spike vs AT. I can't believe those limpers folded! Only had one bullet invested in it tho. Carry on.
Limpers not calling is nuts. They must have been worried about BB's flat. Jam is fine -- high risk/high reward, but you aint got no chips, so a chance at a triple with a hand that has a lot of equity versus ATC is good.
The question on the turn is - would he be doing it with KT or smaller pocket pair from UTG. If not, then you’re fvcked. I Lost a lot with KJ and KQ in exact same situations.
Wanna ask about mtt variance. I've played live and have done well over a 3-4 year span. Maybe won 3 tournies and some runs in low buy in average around $600 live. In same span I did quite poorly in $200 online mtts on acr with huge weekend field sizes (this is a few years back). I would say average field size was bigger online but my graph is also very bad. Would you say a good player won't experience such bad variance live bc the player pool is much weaker than a $200 online mtt I feel I've done quite well live and just wonder if I can expect similar results. In my tourny wins, I've done quite well with flips late but also think I exploit well during shorthanded game when at a final table. I always wonder though if I just ran good I have studied a lot and feel I play live better bc I focus on 1 table while I would try to 6-8 table weekends on acr which I felt made my decision making very robotic and unable to think about spots with enough time and precision. I remember accidentally folding AA once bc I had too many tables open and couldn't get to a hand in time to click. Thoughts on subject My guess variance will be a lot less bc a 200 online is way way tougher than a live 400/600/1100/1500 WSOP event.

Variance is FAR more a function of field size than of skill levels. Skill levels effects your RISK, in that if you have a smaller edge over the field, your Edge/Variance will get uncomfortably low. However, it doesn't effect the actual variance much at all.
Live tournament skill level is probably about the same as an online tournament with 5% the buyin. Field size is a huge part of variance. ROI is too-- the better you are, the less you experience downswings-- but MTTs are the weird format where we have higher ROIs at higher field sizes and yet also higher variance at higher field sizes. Higher ROIs in bigger fields because there are simply more bad players. But with the size of the fields being what they are and how much luck tournaments involve, getting to the higher payouts is that much harder. I think it's a call
Somewhat dumb question, but checking my intuition here because the only free preflop charts (GTOW) are equal depth... If Hero has a very short stack in the BB, it's still right to have a significant calling range versus a minraise open, right? Like even if I have 5bb left it's still better to call off one of them closing the action and evaluate a flop? Intuitively this seems obvious but it feels slightly weird.

Yeah. You just gotta get it in with anything. Any pair, almost any draw (maybe not an undercard gutshot, but even that depends on how likely the flop is to pair your opponent).

One way to practice this is to look at your hot and cold equity vs Villain's perceived range. As you are OOP, there is 'always' a slight Equity Realization penalty, but that effect gets fairly small as you get down this shallow, where SPR will be under 1.
