Hello, OOT. A client of ours just shipped us some Graeter's Ice Cream. I have never had this brand before. http://www.graeters.com/ It was damn good. Buckeye Blitz was fantastic. I thought it might be useful for us to have a thread to provide ice cream recommendations. As gelato is so similar to ice cream, I feel that it should also be included in this thread as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelato Difference between Gelato and Ice Cream: Gelato differs from ice cream in that it has a lower butterfat content, typically gelato contains 4-8% versus 14% for ice cream. Gelato generally has slightly lower sugar content, averaging between 16-22% versus approximately 21% for ice cream. Non-fat milk is added as a solid. The sugar content in gelato is precisely balanced with the water content to act as an anti-freeze, that is, to prevent the gelato from freezing solid. The types of sugar used are sucrose and dextrose and invert sugar to control the apparent sweetness. Typically, gelato and Italian sorbet contain a stabilizing base. Egg yolks are used in yellow custard-based gelato flavors, including zabaione and creme caramel.

For a gelato rec, I usually go to my neighborhood place Pazzo Gelato (in Silverlake) - it's really good, perhaps the best in the Los Angeles area. http://www.yelp.com/biz/pazzo-gelato-los... (http://www.yelp.com/biz/pazzo-gelato-los-angeles) Any and all brand / flavor / purveyor recs are welcome! -Al

there are certain flavors of Breyer's & Turkey Hill that have quality ingredients, just about everything else in the budget category is trash afaik

Meijer locally started carrying Turkey Hill's Simply Natural line, I picked up the vanilla bean and so far I'm pretty impressed. It's so hard to find an ice cream that doesn't have gums, emulsifiers and/or carageenen.

I see a Handel's Ice Cream is being put in a strip mall nearby where the Starbucks used to be. Seems like it's a regional chain, higher-end ice cream. I'm not much of a sweets/ice cream person, but wondering if anyone in 2p2land has any experience with these guys? Worth a try whenever they open?

Handels is from boardman Ohio and is very good ice cream. If it is a regular stand alone company store, they make their ice cream on premises.. Their black raspberry is a favorite but the seasonal flavors are worth trying too.

Yeah, it's in a space that used to be a Starbucks, because Starbucks took over an old Pizza Hut building nearby. We're having FF roulette. Thanks for the info. I'm not much for unusual flavor in ice cream, but will try it out once they get it opened. Considering the speed at which spaces get remodeled in this area, I'm guessing dead of winter.

Flat head wood screws, round head wood screws, brass flat head wood screws, drywall screws, round head machine screws, on and on and on. Acquired from someone who had several hundred (?) of the empty containers. I probably have 75 or more.

Also keep the labels from the cardboard boxes the hardware came in, and duct tape them to the containers. Nice way to organize the little stuff.

I have a cache of 1/2 lb coffee cans (real cans!) from the artisanal coffee roaster that I used to use. Great for screws n nails n such. I gave a whole bunch of these cans to AzDaughter1 for use in her science class. Not sure how exactly she planned to use these.

I use 1 block of Velveeta/year for Super Bowl watch party nachos only, and I don't save the boxes.

Beat: I was in a regional chain grocery store (350+ locations) yesterday and I saw 48oz Tillamook Ice Cream on the freezer shelf for $7.29. That's the highest price I've ever seen Tillamook Ice Cream. Wholesale Milk/Cream prices are down/steady but premium/super premium ice cream prices have jumped a $1 container in the last year or so.

Did you know that if pecan pie ice cream tastes spicy to you, you're probably allergic to nuts?
