Creating a fresh Texas Hold'em variant: what two-rule swap would you choose?

I would keep the changes subtle so the game would remain recognizable.

Rule change 1) If you've got Red you're already Ahead

This would apply to situations where two or more players have the same hand (say AT) and the pot is going to be split. In this case the player who holds the most high ranking red card (ace of hearts or diamonds) OR if the player has ten of hearts/diamonds, and the others have only clubs or spades, the player holding the red will win.

Rule change 2) Everybody Loves the Underdog

This change would put the term 'counterfeited pair' into history. Example: the board is 88 JJ K and you are holding 22. Your opponent has A5. Normally the player holding the ace always wins which might be hard to grasp for new players. But with this rule change the ace becomes meaningless. If the two pairs on the board is the best you've got your ace will always lose to the player holding a pair.

Three cards in hand and three cards on the flop, the basic rules remain.

I would keep the same standard format and rules of Texas hold em as much as possible.

2 changes i would implement.

Name: Hold em re Draw

  1. each player would be allocated a set amount of re draw chips.

hold cards and the flop would be dealt as normal.

  1. With the opportunity of using a re draw chip to burn one card and re draw one from the deck.

Before the betting round after the flop has been dealt.

Then the game would procced as normal.

Not sure, maybe something like this already exists... but for a new and different way to play poker I think this might work:

Rule1:

3Cards dealt to players and unlike Omaha - all of these 3 cards can be used.

Rule2:

12 players per table.

SO if table is full then 36 cards are dealt to the players + 5 community cards. Quite different maths.

Not sure what to call it, but start out like Omaha, and end up like Texas Hold 'Em:

Start with 4 cards. Pre-flop round of betting. After betting, discard 1 card.

Flop. Round of betting. Discard another card.

Turn. 3 cards in hand, round of betting. Discard another card.

River with 2 cards in hand. Round of betting. Showdown.

Which changes would you make and how would your new game be played?

What would I do to change the face of our poker a little?

1 - The player would be prohibited from limping, or raising, or staying out, limping would only be allowed between small and bb.

2 - I would leave bets limited as is done in Omaha.

Thank you Cesar.

The River would cease to exist and the flush or straight would only be possible using two cards in equal hands (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-hands/) in Omaha. If I could I would change these rules!๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ™‚

I would make the following variants:

  1. 3 Cards- It consists of 3 cards being dealt to each player and there would only be 6 max on each table, and of the 3 cards they can only use 2 to be able to connect with the others that are opened on the table.

2)Heds up5- That the same thing is played explained but with 5 cards in hand and only 2 cards would be taken to be able to agree with the community cards that are opened on the table.

First rule: I would completely forbid rebuys and add-ons.

Second rule: I would forbid players to cry after bad beats (joke). Seriously, second rule: I would remove the River, which is the fifth card on the table. But at the same time I would deal two cards on the flop instead of three.

Now why I would do this.

First rule: all players should be equal and all players should have equal chances to win the tournament before the tournament starts. Then players would be more cautious, which would add to the high error cost of playing at the table. This would only add to the competitive atmosphere at the tables.

Second rule: this is an interesting innovation that would have made each player's pre-flop cards more valuable. The all-in of conditional AKs against 87 would have a higher % win rate, and we would see more fair poker based on smart tactics rather than fish luck. And as for combinations on the board, it would be harder to collect a straight and a flush from 1 card. Well agree that a flush and a straight from 1 card is pure luck. And in poker, luck should not be on the same level as the skills of the players. And so the same flush and straight would be impossible to pick up on the flop. This would increase the importance of top pairs on the flop! And imagine what would be the probability of picking a royal flush, for example? Oh, those would be incredible moments of happiness! ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜‰

Rule change 1: Before any betting, show 1st card of the flop. After 1st round of betting, show 2nd & 3rd cards of the flop.

Rule change 2: Showdown doesn't happen after the river. After the river, players can change 1 or both hole card, then a final round of betting. Showdown after the betting.

2 cards dealt on flop

2 cards dealt on turn

For tournament play, final table... river bet must be allin or fold

Would I play it? Absolutely... not!

Long Stud Holdem:

Each player is dealt an additional exposed card that only they can use. So now you get more information to consider.

Deal the five community cards one at a time and have a betting round after each card is dealt. That is a lot of betting.

In general, the rules of poker completely suit me and seem balanced, except for ONE thing. I would change the rank of cards in a flush so that every card in the combination is important, and not just the highest one. (Yeah, I'm just tired of losing KQ-KJ to A2 etc.)๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

As an old player who has been playing this great game for a very long time, I like everything as it was and is now, the rules were all made a long time ago and I certainly don't want to change them, but if such a theory I would make each player have 3 cards in his hand and have more than 9 players at the table, for example, 15 people, so that the whole structure of pocket hands and how to play would change and everything would be different

#1 You have to use both of your hole cards in the hand. Your hand consists of your two hole cards and three from the board.

#2 No checking. When it's your turn if you check, you fold. Bet or fold.

LaNimmerMicro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

I would adapt this to MTT:

1- Make an optional straddle that has to be equal to the big blind and could be initiated by any position (before the cards are dealt).

2- The first player to bet would be the player to the left of the straddle.

I'm cheating a little as this variety I believe is played in cash games at casinos (https://www.casino.us/), I think is called Mississippi? Please correct me if I am wrong. But it would make a pot larger and change the whole dynamics of the position.

RachidaoRegular34 posts

Every pair or straight has the same value, A2345 equal 10JQKA, 22 equal AA. Flush is a flush, full house is full house and so on...that way the dealt cards mean less. No card is higher than others. If one uses two cards of the hand and has two pair, and other has two pair using one of the hand, the player who uses both wins, straight, flush etc the same method.

The other change, already mentioned in the thread, is no rebuys or add-on. Keep the game fair.

Changes would be the minimal, in reality only one, whoever is absent for more than 5 minutes will be excluded, what happens that some players assemble a number of chips and then are absent, the game is to be played, I consider this as bad player, but strategy is strategy. Although I'm not a fan of the river, I always end up losing, maybe I would eliminate the river

  1. The anti Joe Cada rule: if the 20/80 or worse underdog wins an all in pre flop, it's a split pot

  2. The Splitting inherance rule: 2 players that have the same hand (e.g. AhAd x AsAc) and go all in, can decide between them to split the pot before the flop

Hi, I would make this 2 rules:

  1. Add the joker option to allow making hands (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-hands/) with one of them (it would count as any card to fill the hand, for example: Getting A+Joker could give you pocket aces)

  2. Not allowing ties: When a tie is gotten at the river, a new card is shown, and repeats until someone gets the bigger hand.

Ok, this was a great question. I could think in other rules, but here we go:

  • 1st Rule โ†’ Cards Discard Rule

At your first time speaking in the game (pre-flop), you will be able to discard one of your own cards and buy another card on the top of the deck.

But there's is a condition: you need to double the biggest bet of the table.

Examples:

  • If you are in UTG, you will be forced to play and to raise the game to 2bb.

  • If you are in CO and HJ raised to 3bb you will need to pay 6bb.

  • If UTG+1 raised to 2.5bb, BTN 3-bet to 9bb and you are in SB, you need to raise to 18bb.

Of course, everybody will know that you changed one of your cards, and this means that, now, you have a large range than you had before taking this action.

  • 2nd Rule โ†’ Cards Trade Rule

Now you can trade one of your cards with your opponent at the end of bets on pre-flop (flop will be only shown after this).

You can do this just one time and with one single player.

This is a new way to bluff (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/bluffing/) against your opponent, because you will only see the card after he gives it to you.

You need to talk and try to convince him to give you the correct card, this is a good way to let you form more synergistic hands.

Obviously, he will not give you what are you looking for, so you need to made he thinks that he is giving the wrong card to you.

For example:

  • Imagine that you are with an A8 and Villain is with K8. If the trade hapens, you can be with an AK, with an 88 or you can still with your A8 (if you traded your 8 with his 8). It depends how you talked with him and which card he decided that was better to give to you. Also, is interesting to notice that, if both traded your 8s, you will know that both of you are with, at least, one 8 at the hand.

This is just a bad example to explains how this rule could change the game strategy.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these crazy rules that I thought right now.

  1. The flop is only 2 cards not 3 and the turn is 2 cards not 1 (the river is still 1 card).

  2. All players still in the hand receive 1 card after the betting round on the flop but before the turn is revealed (so all players have 3 hole cards), then all players still in the hand after the betting round on the turn must discard 1 card before the river is shown (so all players now are back to 2 hole cards again), the river is played normally.

1 . If the flop hits :as4::6s4:or:ah4::6h4::ac4::6c4:This means all players are playing at the table..As a result, losing players bet double the pot.Believe me, the bank would have increased tenfold

  1. Playing dark without opening your hand. You have the right to open your hand Only after the flop.Just like in the first option, the losers bet a double pot

In short, this is a very similar rule to the game Snoring.

From 10 cents in the bank can reach up to 1,000 dollars by the end of the game

Do wish some of these variants would actually happen.

Two other fun variants would be:

  1. All in all the time. Get your two cards, all in or fold and run the cards. Now the game could be done pretty damn quick. LOL.

  2. Get your 2 cards and be able to discard and replace 1 of them. But if you do, you have to play the hand. So your 72 became a 73...lol. Just my luck.

2nd change : 2 options on the flop : all in or fold

(preflop we would have betting round , you could also go all in without seeing the flop )

As simpler as possible .

Just luck and easy decisions (most of the times )

Some people use the time bank as a strategy, but playing with different hands on the preflop should remain, as it will reduce pushing and allow players to play their hands more."

In my creative poker laboratory, I'd introduce two game-changing rules:

Limited Position Switch: In traditional Texas Hold'em, players are seated in fixed positions relative to the dealer button. In this variant, players can switch their seats clockwise or counterclockwise once per round, just before the flop is dealt. This adds a strategic element by allowing players to change their table dynamics and adapt to different opponents.

Community Burn Card: Instead of burning one card before dealing the flop, one community card is burned and placed face down in the center of the table. After the river card is revealed, this burned card is turned face up and becomes a community card that all players can use to form their best hand. This rule introduces an element of surprise and more potential winning combinations.

With these changes, the game remains rooted in Texas Hold'em while adding a touch of strategy and excitement.

I would create two rules:

1: Every player sitting at the table can see one card from 3 opponents in pre-flop

2: Since the first rule would be applied, I would eliminate the all-in entry in the pre-flop and the raises would be limited in each round of betting, doubling each round, making the luck factor not as effective throughout the tournament , and whoever dedicates themselves to the game, studying and so on wins...

I have read with interest all your suggestions on changing the rules of hold'em. My suggestions are as follows:

  1. If you have a flush, you must call on all the remaining rounds. If you went with a check during the flush and it will be revealed on the river - the whole pot you won is given to the opponent, or divided equally between the rivals. As a penalty, you are supposed to skip the next hand.

  2. If the players went all-in on the preflop, then the losing side loses all its chips regardless of their number.

Imagine entering a contest to devise the most original poker variant by altering only two rules of Texas Hold'em. What two modifications would you choose, and how would the resulting game be played?

Texas Hold'em's rules are solid, but some aspects can be confusing for newcomers and even for experienced players. I would change one rule: I would rank the card suits so that one suit outranks another.

I think Holdโ€™em is perfect as it is. Although I enjoy short-stack Holdโ€™em a lot...

But letโ€™s examine it.

Iโ€™ll label it conditional No Limit.

Preflop follows normal betting action, while on the flop no 3 bet action is permitted โ€” thatโ€™s the first modification.

Turn action remains unchanged.

River: an all-in is only allowed if that player has taken action in every prior round โ€” preflop, flop and turn.

I donโ€™t expect it would be popular, but thatโ€™s what I just thought of ๐Ÿคฃ

3-card holdem. You receive 3 cards, but for the showdown you only use two. Like, you can have AAA but your hand is aces pair, only make a set if you hit another A on the board. You can pay the streets for something like a pair, and hit a straight/flush runner. The last rule is showdown all cards after the hand end. If you bluff (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/bluffing/), you need to show, if you win too. When the villain gives up, you need to show your hand.

If I had to change something on the variant I like most (NL Holdem) I probably would change the following as it would make the game even more hard to solve:

  • allow straights over the Ace e.g. QKA23, these straights should be worth less than AKQJT straight, means the less small cards (2,3,4,) the better

  • add a fifth colour e.g. โ€žcircleโ€œ so that we have a deck with 13 additional cards, which brings not only more outs but even a new hand โ€žfive of a kindโ€œ which should be comparable with a royal flush ( did not calculate yet). This would decrease chances on flushes for sure.

But to be honest, I really like the rules we are using for dozens of years ๐Ÿ™‚

All the rule changes were invented before I arrived, so I would implement just two straightforward tweaks to Texas Hold'em:

  1. Any card I receive outranks any other card, therefore it always wins. ๐Ÿ˜

I'd name the new variant Action Hold'em and I'd keep pretty much all the rules from Texas Hold'em and just 'play' a bit with the rules and make this 2 changes:

  1. deal the 5 community cards one at a time and have 5 streets of betting(1 after each card is dealt)

  2. you have to use both hole cards to make your best hand* so your 2 cards + 3 from the board...

Have a great weekend everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

I love variants of all kinds.

I could suggest many variations.

my 2 would be

  1. lowest game wins. A 2 high beats any other card. so on showdown the player with lets say a pair 2 wins over any other pair or lowest str8 or flush and so on...

  2. a player is dealt 4 hole cards, 1 card for a flop, 1 turn and 1 river. make your game with any 5 out of the 7 cards.

I would split everyone's stack into 4 so you would only lose 25% of chips everytime you go all in. No other changes needed.

if you won 40k pot that would increase each of your 4 stacks by 10k. So all 4 stacks would remain equal at all times.

Montana Holdem

The board is flipped...

Preflop action with just your two hole cards.

Then the board flips back....

A single card appears on the flop

Betting

One card comes on the turn

Betting

Three cards show up on the "river"

Betting

And naturally I win because I'm the only one who gets what's happening... hee hee

Imagine that you have entered a competition to see who can create the most unique new poker variant by changing only two rules in Texas Hold'em. Which changes would you make and how would your new game be played?

I'd Alter the rule making 5 card flush beatable by a 6 card flush even if the 5 card flush has the higher ranked card without affecting any other hierarchy.

I'd Alter the rule making 5 card straight beatable by a 6 card straight (including straight flush ranking) even if the 5 card straight has the higher ranked straight without affecting any other hierarchy.

Should be fun ๐Ÿ™‚

I'd change the rule so a 5 card flush can be beaten by a 6 card flush even when a 5 card flush contains the higher-ranked card, without altering any other part of the hierarchy.

I'd change the rule so a 5 card straight can be beaten by a 6 card straight (including straight flush comparisons) even when a 5 card straight is the higher-ranked straight, again without affecting any other hierarchy.

Should be fun ๐Ÿ™‚

I would keep the same standard format and rules of Texas hold em as much as possible.

2 changes i would implement.

Name: Hold em re Draw

  1. each player would be allocated a set amount of re draw chips.

hold cards and the flop would be dealt as normal.

  1. With the opportunity of using a re draw chip to burn one card and re draw one from the deck.

Before the betting round after the flop has been dealt.

Then the game would procced as normal.

this can be thing, i like where your head is at!

I used to ponder this question. As soon as I began playing without realizing there were so many poker variants, and the concept of 4 card poker occurred to me โ€” to my dismay that variant already existed. After that I learned about additional poker forms, and now I can't come up with anything original.

It seems like there are already so many versions of this game that if I invented a new one, it probably already exists. Still, I'd be curious about a rule where every player who raised preflop would be forced to shove all-in on the river, regardless of how the table dynamics unfolded. Honestly, I lack imagination and prefer classic poker. Apologies if my response is incomplete.

I have made tactical mistake of waiting and thinking of two unique variants. Luckilly no one has wrote them (if my eyes are not mistaken). ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Instead of getting two cards, everyone at a table gets only one card. Then goes initial round of betting and then you get your second card. Then goes second round of betting. The rest is the same....

  2. Again, everyone at a table gets only one card (no second hole card). However, the number of community cards is 6. Flop 3, Turn 1 and River 2 cards. You can use every card that gives you best outcome out of 5 cards.

Interesting! With so many new game variants already being explored, let's think about this.

Cards are dealt and the first card of the flop is revealed before any action takes place.

A cap on the maximum chips that can be committed pre-flop could be introduced: players may put in up to 50% of their stack, provided they have more than 10BB's โ€” intended to stop players from going all in for 50 big blinds following a 2bb raise.

For a long time I have thought that two rules in Texas hold'em don't provide justice :

  1. When a player has a pair (example: 55, 66...) and two higher pairs fall on the board and his opponent wins the pot with a high card.

  2. When a player has a pair like QQ and his opponent has an over card hand like K4o and a four of a kind falls on the board.

Rule change 1. Suits have more meaning. Spaid's are the strongest suit, Diamonds would be 2nd Hearts 3rd and clubs worst. So take a hand where both players have the straight. 8h 6c 5s 3s Kd on the board. Button has 9d 7c and SB has 9c 7h. In our normal game it is a split pot. With my rule the player with the 9d would have the stronger suited card and would win the pot if it was checked down. It also can make betting more fun so say the SB checked and the button bet 1/2 pot but now the SB jams 2x pot. What should the Button do? They have the nut straight but they don't have the nut suite hand. They lose to a player with a 9s but would beat the 9c or 9h. Would make playing hands (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-hands/) like this more complex. I actually hate split pots and why I would like this rule and how it would change the game.

Rule change number 2. I would love to see 4 betting rounds post flop. Same poker game (https://www.casino.us/poker/games/) but not the flop would be just 2 of the cards not 3. Seeing less cards on the flop would make it harder to play since you have so much less information on hand and with the extra betting round would make the pots much bigger as well.

One of the things i love about the game is how complex this simple game it. Making a deep and more complex game would be fun,

The first rule that I would probably introduce in tournaments to make the game more exciting would be that players under 10 blinds should have the opportunity to choose if they go ALL IN preflop, to run the board TWICE as in cash games, and the second rule that I would change would be the way to make ''a STRAIGHT''. I would like to introduce that any suite or combination of cards from broadway can make a STRAIGHT with the low value cards in the pack not only as is the rule now when only de ACE could with the combo of A2345. In my mind also KA234 or QKA23 and JQKA2 all this combos should be a straight.

I think it's perfect as it is.

For the purposes of this scenario I would perhaps:

  1. Discard one at turn and show table.

ok how about this one......there is an ante and there is NO FLOP....the 5 board cards are dealt one by one and the betting begins after the cards are dealt, then the first board card is dealt, followed by a round of betting., then the next card, round of betting and so on. If somebody bets, there would be a maximum of 2 reraises per round, up to pot limit.

Alexey ShleyNewbie3 posts

You could try changing rules like:

  1. If several players go all-in, the cards on the board are laid out several times, there may be a chance to share the pot 50/50, or if three players go all-in, the board is laid out three times, if, for example, 99 won against KK for the first time, then the second board may not have such problems;

  2. distribute places among suits, let's say worms are in first place to baptize in second place, let's say K5 will take two dinak cards, let's say K5 only one king of worms has the other king of spades, if the board finds that both divide the pot in half, the one with the higher suit will win.

I like the way the rule is.

  1. It would give the option to exchange one card from the game without the player having to choose which one to exchange and there would be a limit on exchanges.

  2. would give at least 9 players a chance of repechage, this repechage will be between them

I would alter two rules in Texas Hold'em to produce a distinct variant:

  1. Community Card Placement: Rather than dealing all five community cards (the flop, turn, and river) face-up on the table, they would be dealt face-down. Players would still be able to use these cards, as players take bets and actions, some of those community cards could be revealed incrementally. For instance, if a player posts a sizable bet, they might opt to expose one of the face-down community cards to everyone. This introduces added unpredictability and strategic depth๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ

  2. Blind Reveals: At the beginning of each hand, every player would show one of their hole cards to the player on their immediate left. This creates extra strategic nuance and curiosity, as players would gain partial knowledge of their neighbor's holdings and could modify their own tactics accordingly.

The new variantโ€”let's name it "Mystery Card Hold'em"? ๐Ÿคฃ

1 - There would be no more draw.

I would implement a suit-strength ranking to resolve ties.

2 - On every hand, you would have the option to guess an opponent's hole cards; if your guess is correct, you win twice the pot.

The chips would be awarded to the hand's loser.

2.1 - Only players who win the pot by conventional means would be permitted to attempt the double-pot guess, and the guess must be declared prior to the showdown.

Hope thatโ€™s clear lol

Although it's generally unwise to change the rules of an already established and popular game, if I were pressed to adjust two rules to increase interest, I would:

  1. I would permit only raises and re-raises before the flop. Thus, up to 3 bets preflop, no 4 bet+ configurations.

  2. I would discard the 6-max structure and substitute it with 5-max and 7-max structures. I would retain the full-ring format.

Bluffs could become more important in the game.

On the one hand, if someone calls a bluff (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/bluffing/), risking their tournament life but not holding the nuts.

On the other hand, whoever pulls off a bluff with nothing in hand and risks his tournament life in the process.

This applies to any game situation in which there are only two players at the table and one of them...

a) ...calls a bluff + risks his tournament life + not but holds the nuts

b) ...survives a bluff + risks his tournament life + plays five highest cards

It's probably not fully thought out. These are situations that do not occur very often and could therefore be honored accordingly and for the reason that tournament life is at stake in every game situation (a, b). (e.g. through a big blind that is paid by the other player)

I would reduce the deck to remove cards from 2 to 5 to create stronger hands and speed up the game

Isn't that essentially short deck?

The only rule adjustment I'd want is to eliminate rake on split pots. It's irritating to lose money despite having the best hand โ€” it happened twice recently AA v AA before the flop, then AKs v AKs, and both times I lost 4 or 5bbs. I suppose it's not really a rule change, just a change I'd appreciate!

How to play

  1. Every player gets one special chip

  2. Can see only one of opponents hold cards you chose .only one chip for session.

Or you have a time until you get back the chip or it could be every 3 levels. .

Game number 3 Texas hold โ€˜em destroy.

How to play

  1. Each player gets one special chip

  2. Can destroy one of opponents hold cards only one chip for the entire session.or every 3 levels you get back the chip but only one at a time no stacking.

I have more but thatโ€™s it for now what do you think ๐Ÿค”.

5 cards making a straight makes your hole cards nullified as well, whichever value makes the straight is dead

The NEW VARIANT; may include a wild card added to the original 52 card deck.

For example, a JOKER.

This Joker, is WILD, simplymeaning, it is any of the 52 cards in the deck, with ONLY ONE EXCEPTION.

That EXCEPTION IS, the original live card in the current playing hand.

The player with the wildcard (Joker) may use it as an Ace of Spade, completing a Royal Flush, in Spades. Which is fine.

However; if any opposing player has that original Ace of Spade, it automatically makes the Joker, and thus, that entire hand, invalid.

Had the Joker been used as the 9 of Spade, A Straight Flush is a valid hand, providing no player in that specific hand, holds that original 9 of Spade.

The Joker, becomes Neutral or Invalid, however, the other remaining original card, remains valid, irrespective of the player with the Joker, calling their Joker a specified card, which an existing player in that same hand, possesses. (By chance).

I'd call it Mystery Hold'em ๐Ÿ˜‚โ™ ๏ธ

Players are dealt 3 hole cards, and they must use exactly 2 of them together with the 3 community cards to form their best possible hand.

Additionally, every player still in the hand must discard 1 hole card face down on the river.

I believe this twist makes it considerably harder to read opponents' holdings (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-hands/) as), since they have more alternatives and must also factor in what they might have discarded. It increases the skill required to prevail at the game. You need to plan which cards you will throw away and infer which cards opponents might have discarded. You must evaluate the range of plausible hands they could hold and the likelihood of each. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ๐Ÿƒ

Real players. Deep discussions. Better poker.poker.forum
