Anyone tried playing poker while stoned?

I've been experimenting, and I consistently play better poker when I smoke a little pot before a live session. For some reason it makes me more observant and focused, my reads improve significantly and I become noticeably more patient.

Anyone else have similar or different experiences?

it's already very bad, you lose a lot of buys quickly with actions that you're concentrating on wouldn't do, I've already spit out a bank of 100$ when I wanted to play after I came from a party and I was really drunk then I entered high tournaments and I ended up disappointed with my attitudes at the tables!

I'm a master chef, a great storyteller and a tireless worker when I'm stoned ... but playing Poker under the influence leads to a spiral of failures and depression. No shame in admitting that, as most intellectually taxing activities are best done sober.

Alcohol has been very bad for me when I play poker.

But smoking has not been a negative factor for me

I believe this is a horrible question. Playing poker while under it, I think, is the primary reason for losing.

No. In this case, it is better not to play at high limits.

I don’t use drugs and rarely drink, so I have no personal experience with this... but I suppose if you’re stoned or drunk while playing poker you might play more carelessly and perhaps more aggressively... and that could explain some successful hands in a particular session... though I doubt that being stoned or drunk is a sound (profitable) strategy 😉... that’s just my opinion... I could be wrong and maybe it’s the secret to some winning sessions… 🤪😉

Under the occupation of hearths, you will not be 100% focused on the game. With the same success, you can just go to play in a casino, the effect is the same minus all the money.

I believe you must play poker with a clear mind and proper condition, otherwise you are bound to lose! If you're stoned, it's wiser to avoid gambling (https://www.casino.us/), particularly poker! I wish you good luck at the tables and stay sane!

I could be wrong, but I think most people who replied to this thread have never smoked. In fact, when you're stoned, just enough though, your ability to focus is higher than normal. It could be beneficial in a live game, but not online and especially not when multitabling.

But the problem is that you cannot stay in the same state of mind for a long time and you can certainly not measure how much you should smoke in order to "stay in the zone" enough to make a session profitable.

Consequently, get stoned when you want to relax and listen to some good music. Poker needs all your attention, concentration and patience.

this thread was almost 5 years ago and since then many times iv had good and bad decisions, and guess what, i also had the same experience sober...

its like the thing with drunk and driving have less crashes overall if you see stats about people crashing sober. 😵 bad analogy i know

I've gone the other way. I perform best when my head is totally clear. Even a little bit can dull my decisions or cause me to second-guess, particularly in larger pots.

People respond differently, but I prefer depending on solid sleep, mental clarity, and concentration rather than anything else at the table.

To succeed, any method that helps is fair game — you should employ whatever can assist — yet people differ, and what benefits one person may harm another.

It really comes down to how experienced u are with poker and weed. There are known high stakes players who play while high.

Also depends the setting:

Live or online?

Cash or tournaments?

How many tables?

I wouldn't recommend for example trying to mass multitable while high but i can truly imagine it could help with patience issues while playing 1 live table or a few long online tournaments.

Some players report it aids their relaxation, while others believe it hampers their speed of thought and choices. In a game that depends on focus, discipline, and situational reading, even slight shifts in concentration can have an impact

piicRegular48 posts

I tried it a couple of times, and it definitely wasn't for me. I felt slower, overlooked details, and second-guessed many more decisions. Some people say it helps them relax, but I believe it undermines my focus and overall win rate, so I'd prefer to play with a clear head.

margmilo44Regular26 posts
Posted Jul 30, 2026, 12:05 AM#48

I couldn't do it. If I'm playing poker, I want my mind as clear as possible because there are already enough tough decisions to make. Being stoned would probably slow down my thinking and make it harder to stay focused on the action.

There's definitely a sweet spot! A tiny bit can actually help smooth out tilt, slow down impulsive reactions, and force you to sit back and observe player dynamics. The catch is the line between "calm focus" and "losing track of pot odds" is paper-thin—if you cross it, it gets expensive real fast!

ElTigreMicro-Stakes Grinder14 posts

I don’t think that’s a great idea. 😅 Poker already demands a lot of concentration, patience, and good decision-making, so I’d prefer to be fully focused when I play. Being under the influence can make it much tougher to assess situations objectively and follow a strategy. It might seem fun for a casual home game, but if real money (https://www.casino.us/poker/) involved, I’d much rather play with a clear head.

Correct me if im wrong, but was there not few poker pros who were notorious going high/drunk as a kite to events ( and still managing to do good, like wsop (https://www.casino.us/poker/tournaments/wsop/) win).

Not still recommendable and results may wary.

Cannabis can make some people feel more relaxed, but that doesn’t necessarily mean better poker decisions. THC can also impair attention, short-term memory, reaction time, and judgment. So the “better reads” might sometimes be confidence rather than actual improvement.

dreamer13Shark143 posts
Posted Aug 19, 2026, 7:29 AM#58

We all behave differently when drunk. For some, alcohol is simply contraindicated. Some of us get drunk faster than others, and there's no need to be ashamed of it. Just know your limits and leave on time. Yes, I know it's easier said than done, and putting this idea into practice is nearly impossible, but in this matter, as in anything else, the key is effort.Combining alcohol and poker is fun. However, playing poker while half-drunk is not fun at all.

G0930Shark127 posts

it's already really bad — you lose many buys quickly by doing actions you focused on that don't work, I've already burned through a bank of 100$ when I tried to play after returning from a party and being very drunk, then I entered high tournaments and wound up disappointed with my behaviour at the tables!

Being drunk cannot be equated with being high.

Apples and oranges

I Live PokerRegular29 posts

I prefer to play sober, especially live. I was sober every time I won a live tournament. However, in moderation and at the right moment, it can actually be beneficial—a drink or some cannabis. But everyone has a different relationship with drugs and situations; if you're an alcoholic, for example, you know you won't be able to have just one drink.

khushalpremRegular70 posts

I’ve seen many players say that, but I believe it varies by individual. Personally, I prefer to play entirely clear-headed because what seems to sharpen focus can still subtly impair judgment, reaction time, or decision-making. I’d go with whatever reliably delivers your best outcomes over time.

pokersztarRegular37 posts

Personally, I’ve found that I perform better and appear to be more profitable when I play after using marijuana. I feel calmer, more patient, and more focused, which helps me make stronger decisions at the table. Naturally, I recognize that individuals respond differently, and what benefits one player might not suit another.

Personally, I believe there's a thin border between staying relaxed and genuinely impairing your judgment. Poker demands significant concentration and self-control, so I choose to play with a clear head.
