Is Poker Based more on Luck or Skills?
LOL! I'm not a winning poker player most of the time. But I would have to say skill 99.9% most of the time. The only reason I place ITM sometimes is because I do study and adhere to many standard principles of poker. Luck can help when you need it or against you. Apparently it all evens out over a million hands (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-hands/)!

That evening out thing is not true, it's very different playing a tournament and getting a bad beat when there are for example 9 people left than when are 500 people left, you spend hours playing to get there, and as we al know all the money is up top. Evening out thing is only for cash game players and only if you are playing same stakes always because as we all know it's not the same thing when you lose 2, 4 or 10 bucks as is when you lose 200, 400 or more in a single pot
I believe effort matters most.
The game is always shifting and developing; if you aren’t improving, you’re falling behind.
There are countless resources available if you choose to use them to better your play.
Patience, reading skills and a lot of luck the most important factor

I have already answered other similar questions, but I will opine, online a lot of patience, skill, study and luck. Live, a lot of skill, technique, patience, constant study, knowing the place, studying the players, waiting for the right moment and some luck
True Heart and Commitment to the Game" - Tony G
Making money, large amounts. There are no other criteria.
Consistency and discipline are two fundamental factors for success in poker, and I could say that in everything

I agree. I will never even out because statistically I will never play enough hands. I know when I play a cash game and lose $200. I know it is gone, but it is part of a monthly entertainment budget. When I lose my stack I play freerolls (https://www.casino.us/poker/best-freerolls/) until the next month.
I'm also looking for the magic formula! I'm nowhere near a winner at poker, but it takes a lot of discipline and study, but the luck factor helps at any given moment...
Skill, flair, and concentration — though a bit of luck helps now and then!🤔🍀
I think it's a little of both. In the matter of luck or ability, do I accept that luck influences a lot, but always less the more ability you have?
BRM is the most important skill: if you don't respect it, you'll always go broke.
If you possess talent, you can bluff (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/bluffing/) and take several pots by deceiving opponents, but achieving that requires a great deal of practice. And luck is just luck — you can’t predict when fortune will smile on you in poker.
I think about it; Oline 80% luck, and at the table I look into the eye 80% knowledge, patience...
Consistency and, pariente and discipline are fundamental three more important factor's for succes poker
Being a winning poker player relies primarily on skills such as strategy, opponent reading, bankroll (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-bankroll-management/) management, emotional discipline, and poker mathematics. While luck plays a role, poker is a skill-based game, with skilled players consistently outperforming less experienced ones in the long run, as their ability to make informed decisions based on available information is crucial for success😉
Poker depends on skill, luck, experience, patience and discipline. Each of these elements matters and is essential — without them, maintaining consistent strong results is impossible.
A successful poker player combines skills, strategy, discipline, and knowledge to excel in this strategic game. Below are several key elements that contribute to poker success:
Knowledge of the game: A successful player possesses thorough knowledge of poker rules, the various game variants, the odds (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/odds/), betting approaches and tactics for handling particular hands.
Mathematical and statistical ability: Grasping probabilities and statistics is vital for making informed choices each hand. Successful players understand the mathematics behind poker, enabling them to estimate a hand's chances and make decisions based on data.
Psychological skills: Being able to read opponents, manage emotions, remain composed under stress, and use psychology to one’s advantage is critical in poker. Recognizing when to bluff, when to fold, and when to be persistent is important.
Discipline: Discipline is essential for effective bankroll (playing capital) management, establishing win-loss thresholds, and avoiding emotional impulses. A disciplined player knows when to quit a hand and when to continue.
Adaptability: Successful players adjust to various playing styles and modify their strategies according to the situation and the opponents. Flexibility and the capacity to adapt are vital for success in poker.
Experience and practice: Ongoing practice and accumulated experience are key to improving at poker skills. Successful players learn from errors, review their hands, and seek ways to improve continuously.
Bankroll management: Understanding how to handle money and a playing bankroll prudently is crucial for long-term survival in poker. A successful player sets loss boundaries and manages funds sensibly to avoid financial collapse.
Continuous study: Because poker evolves over time, successful players keep learning and refreshing their knowledge. They read books, study tactics, analyze hands, and stay updated on current trends in the poker world.
What skills, abilities, and knowledge matter most to becoming a winning poker player?
Is poker driven more by luck or by skill?
Patience is one ability everyone needs; Hold'em differs from other poker variants (https://www.casino.us/poker/games/) I have played and some describe it as the "Cadillac" of all poker games (https://www.casino.us/poker/games/), Which I suppose it is, compared to Draw and Stud, But generally you cannot afford to see every flop with just any 2 cards because your chip stack would vanish quickly.
So sometimes you fold hands that would later have been the best — like a 7/2 off that would have become quads, or the 5/9 that would have completed a straight. But you engage in pots with A/K, K/Q or a strong pocket pair; some players even favor specific holdings like Doyle Brunson's 10/2, or J/10 because if they make a straight it is often the "nut" straight.
Being patient and reading opponents well helps you judge whether your hand will hold by the river. I have called a river bet holding 2 pair, even with 4 spades on the board and none in my hand, and I won.
Other times I flopped a king-high flush only to see the 4th heart arrive, and I folded because I suspected the aggressive opponent had the ace of hearts — and another player called his all-in with a straight, proving my read correct.
Call it luck, a gut feeling, or "spider senses," but if I sense I'm beaten I will fold strong hands, and I will call when I believe I'm ahead.
Tournaments are won by sensible players who wait for good spots and take down many smaller pots rather than chasing rare huge pots. I've seen it repeatedly: one player builds a massive stack and 10 minutes later is busted out "hero to zero" after a few poorly played hands.
As the song goes, "You have to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em."
Poker isn't a game of luck; it's a game of understanding your odds, knowing when to fold, when to wager, how to intimidate opponents ... and a great deal more
Constancy, discipline and focus! Having these elements, and always seeking to improve your game, through the search for knowledge of the most profitable plays in the field in which you play.
Hi — I believe that honing skills through practice and learning strategies is the correct approach. Occasionally, luck plays a small role in the outcome.
I'm looking at this question and I have to ask myself is it correct? Is it "What makes a successful poker player", or is it "What makes a poker player successful"?
It's a good question, regardless.
I think the point I'm trying to make is I've seen players win on the WPT, wsop (https://www.casino.us/poker/tournaments/wsop/), Poker GO, etc., and then you never hear from them again. I wish I could remember this certain player that had said he just wanted to score a big win so he could retire and not have to play anymore. I know, wtf? This was back in '08 or something like that, but I think I get what he meant.
Back to the original question(s). If a player wins a 6-7 figure trny and can now "take it easy" would that player be considered successful in their win? Of course they would.
If a player never wins a major score but is consistently bringing home the bacon via cash-games, is that player considered successful? I would think so.
I think a successful player is the same as a successful American... Debt free. 😉
IMO, (https://mygame1.com/) patience is essential, and a calm mind
To become a successful poker player you must have the following skills and knowledge:
Rules of the game: You need to fully understand the rules of the various forms of poker, including card combinations and procedures.
Strategy and Tactics: It is important to learn various game strategies such as bluffing (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/bluffing/), reading opponents, bankroll (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-bankroll-management/) management and mathematical decision making.
Probability Analysis: Knowing the basics of mathematics and probability will help you assess the chances of success in a particular situation and make the best decision.
Reading Your Opponents: The ability to analyze your opponents' behavior, recognize their signals, and understand how they play can help you make more informed decisions.
Control of Emotions: It is important to remain calm and control your emotions so as not to give away information about the cards or your intentions.
Regarding luck and skill, poker is a combination of both. Luck may play a role in individual hands (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-hands/), but long-term success depends on the skill of the player. A good gambler is able to make informed decisions, manage risks, and take advantage of situations, even if luck is not always on his side.
I'd argue the single most important thing is to keep learning the game. There are many skills required, but the game constantly evolves, and if you want to be a highly successful player you must stay current with those changes.
Poker depends on skills and also a lot of good luck.
Learn about pro players, watch video and see post,

2 good bankroll management

perseverance, patience and hope is what makes you win
I honestly have no idea, haha. Still, I believe studying and self-discipline matter.
What abilities, competencies, and areas of knowledge matter most for becoming a successful poker player?
Is poker driven more by luck or by skill?
I think several factors come into play. Both luck and skill influence the game, but skill comes from ongoing study and effort. I have a thread that covers different topics related to fundamental knowledge to help as a player, and with some luck, to win. Regards!

Its never luck, but also not only strat. Theres another factor that affects your results: odds (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/odds/)
I believe that being a strong player requires winning.
Which skills, abilities, and knowledge matter most to becoming a successful poker player?
Is poker driven more by luck or by skill?
I believe strong results need a combination of skill and luck. A skilled player can tilt the odds in their favor to some degree. Overall, good outcomes are the product of skill, luck, and consistent effort.
In my opinion, the main skill for poker is patience. Poker is a long-term game, and without sufficient patience you will experience various nervous breakdowns, which will eventually affect your overall results. That's all!
A player succeeds through hard work in poker and by continually learning, since poker never stands still and keeps evolving. Luck matters, but over the long term skill and quality of play determine the outcome: if you play better, you’ll win ultimately — yet you still need some luck in poker.
eventually the winnings!! You can be a very skilled poker player and still NOT win... so ultimately the money is all that matters. If you end up on the winning side you’re good; if you’re on the losing side you’re a loser... simple, right?!
A good, successful poker player must above all possess willpower, attentiveness, calmness, and the ability to control their emotions. Such a player also needs theoretical knowledge of poker, which can be acquired from books or websites. And naturally, to become successful in this game one must accumulate extensive experience to be able to react appropriately in any situation against any opponents. Taken together, these qualities should produce a strong result.
Hmm, I’m not sure. Most likely someone who’s completely different from me!
I don't believe in luck, I think that to become a good poker player you have to practice, be patient and have the gift of playing poker, like any spots
Which skills, abilities, and areas of knowledge are most critical to becoming a successful poker player?
Is poker driven more by luck or by skill?
Professional players tend to be patient and persevering. Ongoing study, analysis, and refinement of one’s own game are what separate professionals. Many of us fantasize about turning pro, but fantasy alone isn’t enough. Alongside ambition, you must put in sustained, diligent work on yourself, and only a small fraction of thousands are willing to do that.
I think to become a Winning Poker Player you need to play, study, manage your bankroll, be and play the types of games that give you the best results.
I feel like poker is about 80% skill and 20% luck, just my gut guestimate.
Best of Luck at The Tables All!
Discipline, determinations, skills, and likely a bunch of other things I don't know
Winning money, lots of it. No other criteria.
I think many players have this criterion, but for some reason it doesn't help them much in their desires 🤣
Discipline and patience, adeptly adjust to your opponents' play at the table!!! It's also crucial that while playing you develop the ability to instinctively compute your winning odds as a percentage!!!

Hello
Patience and discipline are core traits of professional players. Recreational players often lack patience and discipline, so their results tend to be average. Luck also plays a part and shouldn’t be dismissed; it’s not less important than your skills or experience.
Good luck 🙂
As in all areas, you need to work hard to improve yourself (the game)
If this is about the initial level, then a good player must correctly choose the preflop spectrum and know the pot's chances in order to make the call profitable at a distance
Already at a slightly higher level the difference between a good player and a bad one is that a good player not only looks at his own hand but also understands what hands his opponent might have. Accordingly, a good player knows when and on which cards you can bluff (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/bluffing/) and also knows how to fold with strong hands. Also, a pro after a loss continues to play flawlessly, while a bad player will blame everyone but himself and make even more mistakes
PS: Luck is needed to win all-in, and skill is needed to know which hands to go all-in or call with, accordingly, the main thing is to play correctly without mistakes and it doesn’t matter how the hand ends, the distance will always give where short-term periods take away
The game of poker is like a captain steering a ship that does not sink
What we currently see are successful professional players with a total focus on poker, always seeking to evolve in the game.
There's a phrase that always inspires me "luck only comes to those who are prepared".
I believe if you are prepared for a certain situation it can be successful.
The most important is skill. Luck will also help.
The ability to adapt to opponents and play according to mathematical calculations in which one or another action from us is shown to be advantageous
Luck is the most important thing needed, as well as patience
Solitaire
Aggressiveness
Sorte
Consistency and discipline are two fundamental factors for success in poker, and so is studying.
Constancy
You are getting so many great answers, and hopefully you've seen that poker is really a multi-faceted game. The mental game of poker, staying calm and calculated, and playing your best game always (your "A-Game") is critical. Knowing how to handle bad beats, because there will be bad beats when luck fails you, is what will let you play a solid game. Stay curious and always try to learn how to improve your skills. Posting hand histories is a great way to do that.
At the heart of a successful poker game (https://www.casino.us/poker/games/) is the ability to think strategically and make informed decisions...
I think the point I'm trying to make is I've seen players win on the WPT, WSOP, Poker GO, etc., and then you never hear from them again. I wish I could remember this certain player that had said he just wanted to score a big win so he could retire and not have to play anymore. I know, wtf? I remember who it was! It was Ylon Schwartz, a player from the very first wsop (https://www.casino.us/poker/tournaments/wsop/) "November 9". He placed 4th. I remember he said something like if he scores big he'll move to a beach and relax forever, lol. Not exactly a bad plan.
Oh yeah, Peter Eastgate wound up taking down that bracelet.

What are the skills/abilities and knowledge that are most important for being a winning poker player?
Is Poker Based more on Luck or Skills?
I think poker is mostly based on skills, though even professional players can have long periods of losing, before winning again, due to variance.
There are books and courses that will teach the most important poker skills, including the CardsChat free online course.
it depends on how you define success. But overall, to be successful you have to constantly improve your way of playing, because other players do it too. Without progress you will regress
A successful poker player is always a long-term thinker, always manages his bankroll (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-bankroll-management/) wisely, and a poker player is constantly working on his game.
Game is always evolving, being consistent with the way you approach the game. When was playing a lot, tried to set aside time for going over hand history, reading books, getting enough rest and good mental health.
It seems to me that to play poker successfully you need at least 3 things:
Strong mental health (stress resistance, ability not to tilt, etc.)
Comfortable bankroll and competent play in accordance with it (to avoid unnecessary pressure in an already complex and emotional game)
Knowledge of the minimum base of the game (push-fold in short stacks, open raises and pot odds (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/odds/), at a minimum)
Well, I would also like to separately highlight training, the desire for self-development - in my understanding this is not included in the minimum, but it is mandatory for future achievements!
Luck
You need to know the rules and strategies, like when to bet, fold, or raise. Plus, having a good "poker face" helps hide your emotions.
Restrained emotions, thoughtful decisions, practice, the more we play, the more chances we have to cover those occasions when we were unlucky and moved, the distance puts everything in its place
Love for the game. 100% skills.
A successful player is in the top 5-10% of players who make money playing poker. In my opinion, a successful poker player earns a living from poker and has won a few major tournaments, is well-known, etc.
1)Experience 2) Intelligence 3) Willingness to Learn 4) Ability to Control Emotions
i think you have to judge on the money earned. you could be the best strategist, but make no money,
Hello, in my opinion poker is based more on skill than on chance, it is true that many players eliminate you from a tournament playing with luck on their side, but there will be more times when a player with skill beats a player with luck.
I think that what it takes to become a good poker player is to dedicate time to studying it, there are two ways in my opinion to do it
study poker theory (books, tutorials, etc.)
learn by watching professional players.
With these 2 techniques, you will gradually learn to read your opponent and to intelligently implement your own techniques. Don't be afraid of losing and when you lose to someone who was lucky, ask yourself: Did I play well? Would I play the same way again?
Although everyone's goal is to win, knowing that you played well you can be sure of your performance and know that one day you will have a new chance.
Main ability to win constantly.
Discipline, bankroll (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-bankroll-management/) management, skill and math
In my opinion, to be a successful poker player you need desire, a good IQ and a decent amount of money.
I play poker mostly as a hobby, but a successful player requires solid skills in reading opponents, strategy and bankroll management. You must have the ability to make decisions under pressure. And patience, a lot of patience.🤣
For me, a poker player, to be successful, must have a lot of emotional control and patience to endure certain events in the game. If the player is carried away by emotion, he doesn't have much of a future in Poker.
Daily work on the game - theory and practice
main factors, study and discipline
What are the skills/abilities and knowledge that are most important for being a winning poker player?
Is Poker Based more on Luck or Skills?
Money, Money, Money, what else is there. Be the best in the world but if you do not make money what is the point. Who cares how, luck or skill it all comes down to what is in your pocket.
I play poker mostly as a hobby, but a successful player requires solid skills in reading opponents, strategy and bankroll management. You must have the ability to make decisions under pressure. And patience, a lot of patience.🤣
I feel you! Poker's my jam too, (https://mygmofficial.com/) and you're right, it's more than just luck. You gotta be sharp at reading your opponents, have some killer strategy
patience, discipline, intelligence, intuition, competitiveness, mathematical and psychological skills, grit, mental strength, mental balance, love for the game
I think in order to become a successful poker player from scratch, you need to start with theory, learn all the percentages and the pot's chances. Watch high-quality training videos, find yourself a good poker coach and then just get on to practice. Yes, it can take a long time, but in the future, if you really want to do it, it will bring you results. It is also very important to develop discipline and be able to adapt to different opponents and different situations at the tables...
A player thats made his profit and doesnt go gambling (https://www.casino.us/) it all away.
The Practice of Patience and Luck
Your effort and dedication to poker. One of the great Brazilian players, Yuri Dzivielevski, says the following phrase “studying is lucky”. Many people think that poker is a game of luck, but there is a lot of research that proves this view wrong. So in my opinion, to become a great player, you need to study and practice in a way committed to your goal.
by winning, you mean money right? So if you go solely on money, thats easy, a good poker player knows when he is beat and knows when he has the nuts, therefore he should make a lot of money.
For me, a profitable player above 120k dol per year is already successful
Successful poker players typically possess a combination of strategic thinking, emotional control, patience, and a deep understanding of the game. Skill in reading opponents, adapting to different playing styles, and managing bankroll are also crucial for long-term success.
Discipline
Patience
Mind control
Technical knowledge
Game reading
Unpredictability
And a little luck.
Patience, skill, aggression, intelligence, not luck variance evens that out!
What are the skills/abilities and knowledge that are most important for being a winning poker player?
Is Poker Based more on Luck or Skills?
I think skills are more important for a successful player. And I would also add statistics here. We are not insured against failure, and luck is a nice bonus in case of our mistakes, it's like a second chance at success. But the ability to not make mistakes based on individual statistics for each player is, I think, the key to success in serious tournaments. 🤔
What are the skills/abilities and knowledge that are most important for being a winning poker player?
Is Poker Based more on Luck or Skills?
If poker was based on luck, like a casino, there would be no winning players. Only poker rooms and casinos (https://www.casino.us/) would benefit.
For MTTs I would say that the main factor is patience. Also knowing or suspecting when you are behind, and then to fold. This will save you being knocked out. In MTTs you will need a run of cards, skill can only take you so far. As they say if you get to a final table then you have played well. If you win a tournament outright, then you have also had a bit of the rub of the green.
skill helps, but if all the other players are also skilled, the only thing left is luck
it is based on both . you should play right and at the same time have luck
who has accurately predicted his poker game (https://www.casino.us/poker/games/) from the first to the last move, poker is not precisely predictable, etc
a risky game that requires a lot of money
I believe that patience and the ability to make the right decisions at a certain moment are the key to success💕
perseverance and discipline
One insane mindset
In addition to studying if he is skilled, I think he must know how to interpret his opponents and know how to use the senaries to his advantage!
I think that knowledge and skill, and of course luck is needed especially in tournaments
study and perseverance makes you go far and succeed in the long run, it is a very hard game, that's why if you want to go far you must work much more on your game.
Patience and luck
Poker is a game based on skills.
I still haven't been successful, I'm studying and testing various strategies. Always following a YouTuber called Felipe Phil, he is the narrator of PokerStars Brasil, I like the way he teaches
Being consistent is the key, and not being swayed by the results – that's what I believe, but I'm not successful yet, hahaha
Making mistakes and learn from them and keep playing poker. The most important is to find a way of playing poker that fits your personality and that you enjoy playing.
Play at the table with those who play worse than you, and AA, KK, DD in your hand😉
Cool head and smart brain
To become a good poker player, I believe that in addition to persistence, you have to study to better understand the moves and experience comes with time, which makes you play better every day.
Becoming a winning poker player involves developing a combination of skills and knowledge, such as:
It is essential to know the rules of the game and its terms.
Know probability calculations and statistics.
Knowing how to manage your bankroll is crucial
Being able to read your opponents is essential.
Stay calm under pressure, avoid tilt and revenge game.
Poker is a game where luck plays a role, but in the long run, strategic skills and decisions are what make the difference between winning and losing players.
I would say it's a combination of knowledge, patience, mental strength, reading players, and to a lesser extent but not less important, some luck.
Адаптирането към турнир или кеш маса, на която играете, не винаги се получава добра игра и мисля, че не е защото не можете да играете, а не можете да се адаптирате моментално 🙂🙂🙂
First and foremost, a successful poker player needs to have a solid foundation of knowledge and skill. Understanding the game's rules, strategies, and mathematical principles is crucial for making informed decisions at the table. But it's not just about knowing the theory; it's about putting that knowledge into practice through continuous learning and improvement.
Study. Every day
Discipline. Apply what you've learned and avoid temptation
Experience. Nothing beats having seen it all 100 times over.
Patience. Fold, fold, fold,........ raise!
A pathological obsession with the game. It's the only thing that can explain all of the above.
I think it depends on luck and skill.
Patience and the ability to play where necessary, as well as his winnings and achievements.
Tournament play indeed carries a unique set of dynamics and pressures compared to cash games. The emotional impact of a bad beat can be significantly amplified in a tournament setting, especially when you've invested hours of focused play to progress. The intensity of the situation, combined with the potential for significant payouts at the top, can heighten the sting of a loss.
Each format of poker presents its own challenges and psychological considerations. In tournaments, the long hours invested and the escalating stakes as you advance certainly magnify the weight of each hand. Cash games, on the other hand, often provide a more immediate feedback loop and can be influenced by factors like table dynamics and bankroll (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-bankroll-management/) management.
Ultimately, both tournament and cash game players navigate unique mental and emotional landscapes, facing distinct challenges along the way. Understanding these nuances can help players develop the resilience and mindset needed to weather the highs and lows of the game.
I think the important qualities are perseverance and discipline
Must possess patience, the ability to read an opponent and/ the hand you are in for what the best decisions are, courage to make a big call or even more important a big fold (you can’t win a tournament in the beginning levels but certainly can lose), be a great decision maker because poker is all about making the best decisions, have tilt control, being able to control emotions in highly stressful environments is vital.
a lot of work on the game, patience and perseverance, and luck, playing with a bankroll - all that I lack
Well, it's a bit like a recipe with a few key ingredients. First off, you gotta know your stuff – understanding the game, and the odds (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/odds/). But it's not just about the math; you've gotta have a good read on people too. Being able to suss out your opponents and adjust your game accordingly is key. Then there's discipline – no blowing your stack on a whim or going on tilt when things get rough. And let's not forget adaptability – being able to switch up your strategy on the fly. Oh, and a dash of luck never hurts either!
I'm still losing but for me is patience and the ability to fold big hands (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-hands/).
If the player is not disciplined, then knowledge will not help...
folding hands and patience
For a player to be very successful in poker, many things have to be applied, one of them is always perseverance and constant study of the game where it will make you better and better.
It depends on both.It is also clear on abilities and luck.It takes logic, patience, coolness, mathematics.Especially these.
Hello. I have read almost all the comments - guys, I agree with you and I want to say that everything you listed, I sum up in one word for myself: advantage. I would also highlight diligence, in the sense that having reached a certain level, one should not stop and rest on one's laurels - there is always something to learn and improve.
I'm not a winning poker player most of the time too 🙂
A successful poker player embodies a blend of skill, discipline, and psychological fortitude. They grasp game intricacies, exploit opponents' weaknesses, and adapt strategies dynamically. Effective bankroll (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-bankroll-management/) management and emotional control are fundamental. Continuous learning and self-reflection drive improvement, while resilience fuels longevity in the game.
What makes a player successful is study, concentration, a good healthy life, having clear objectives and never stopping learning, even the champion himself has things to improve.
What are the skills/abilities and knowledge that are most important for being a winning poker player?
Is Poker Based more on Luck or Skills?
Patience, persistence and practice are the main things. With that you have to put in study and review time if you are really serious about the game. Talking to others of various skill levels (both higher and lower) about different events, hands, formats, ect can also increase your knowledge and skill.
Discipline and perseverance is the key to success in this sport, always studying the game every day of the year, learning from your mistakes and the results will be seen in the future.
Mastering skills is lucky and you have to win 2 out of 3 hands 😀.
High intelligence, mathematical mindset, self-confidence, knowledge of basic strategies and tactics, add luck here and you are the best poker player.
What are the skills/abilities and knowledge that are most important for being a winning poker player?
Is Poker Based more on Luck or Skills?
No. 1 and the most important is a good Bankroll Management: - if you want to succeed in Poker you need a strong bankroll management, without it you will not get far.
No. 2 is discipline : - you need to be disciplined in order to not deviate from your strategy... ( study daily, don't play emotional, don't play tired )
No. 3 is desire to improve : - since Poker is a constantly evolving you have to keep up, and in order to do that, you have to want to become better and better...to achieve that you need to study all the time.
No. 4 is luck : - luck is always involved in Poker, but what is more important is that luck is not the defining thing here...your skills learned by hard work and consistency will make you profitable in long term.
60% luck... or more...
A lot of discipline!
Study spots at every stage of the tournament, but it's certainly: BANK CONTROL
For me it's a combination of emotional control and patience. In the short term, luck may define the winner of a hand, but in the long term it is study, discipline, and bankroll management that differentiate who wins from those who lose.
In the long run, it's definitely more about skill than luck. Luck decides what happens in a single hand or even over a short stretch, but skill is what separates winning players over thousands of hands. The biggest skills are solid bankroll management, understanding ranges, position, pot odds (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/odds/), discipline, emotional control, and being able to adjust to different opponents. Anyone can run hot for a while, but consistently beating the games takes a lot of study and good decision-making.
Study and dedication!
I think a successful poker player is someone who consistently makes good decisions, not someone who wins every session. Discipline, bankroll management, emotional control, and always being willing to learn from mistakes are what separate long-term winners from everyone else. Patience is also a huge part of success.
I'd say poker is mostly skill in the long run, but luck has a huge impact in the short term. Anyone can win or lose on a given day because of variance, but over thousands of hands, the better players consistently come out ahead.
The biggest skills are solid decision-making, bankroll management, emotional control, discipline, and the willingness to keep studying and adapting. Knowing the math is important, but staying calm after a bad beat and avoiding tilt is what separates many winning players from losing ones.🧐
I barely win in poker, but I know that courage, aggressiveness, skill, and hopefully, define success.
Poker is both about skill and luck. When it comes to online poker (https://www.casino.us/poker/), I would say luck is the more important factor. When it comes to live poker, I would say skill is the more important factor.
Although luck plays an important role in the short term, winning at poker in the long run depends primarily on skill. Poker is a game of incomplete information, decision-making, and risk management, where variance can hide the difference in skill level over thousands of hands, but eventually the advantage of the better player tends to emerge.
Well, it's a bit like a recipe with a few key ingredients. First off, you gotta know your stuff – understanding the game, and the odds.
Thanks for the advice! I really liked the recipe comparison. I'm still learning poker, so hearing experienced players talk about discipline, adaptability, and reading opponents helps me understand what I should be focusing on to improve my game.
I think there's only one thing that will really improve your game: learning to recognize your own mistakes and eliminate them.
It's not just about talent or luck. Discipline, patience, bankroll (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-bankroll-management/) management, and the willingness to keep learning are what separate long-term winners from everyone else. Consistent good decisions always beat short-term results.
not sure if its been said before but one of the biggest impacts on making it as professional player is game selection. whether that is mtts sit and goes cash games or etc. that doesnt necessary mean seeing who has registered to what sometimes thats not possible depending on sites some just have player 1 player 2 etc, it can also mean assessing the ecosystem and player pool as a whole.
There are numerous occasions where I have seen people who were better players then me failing and being losing players because they were playing in a much tougher ecosystem. one situation involved a guy who was playing $100 no limit cash online on pokerstars consistently which I assume would be a very tough field. he was consistently losing but was a better player then me. if he had simply moved to lower stakes even micros and or played live cash instead or switched format he very likely could have played poker for a living. However, he was actually down quite a lot due to this and then said it is incredibly difficult to play for a living.
win coinflips simple like that
I think a successful poker player is patient, disciplined, and always willing to learn. They don't let bad beats control their emotions, and they focus on making good decisions instead of trying to win every hand. I hope to build those habits as I continue learning.
A successful poker player is a highly disciplined analyst who makes decisions based on mathematical reasoning (+EV), and not on emotions or luck. You have thoroughly mastered your strategy, tightly control your bankroll, and are likely to lose your cold-blooded approach in the face of troubling downswings.
Good morning, everyone!
To succeed in any profession, intelligence is important, but in poker it is one of the main foundations. The more intelligent a player is, the better their decision-making tends to be, and consequently, the better their long-term results.
In addition, it is essential to have strong technical knowledge, patience, study GTO extensively, and practice consistently.
Have you ever watched chess tournaments? The best players in the world play very similarly to Stockfish, which is considered the strongest chess engine in the world. In many games, they achieve between 90% and 99% accuracy throughout the entire game, which can last around 60 moves.
The same happens in poker. The best players in the world also achieve very high decision accuracy, playing in a way that is very close to what solvers and GTO recommend. This requires a high level of intelligence, dedication, countless hours of study and practice, and, in my opinion, natural talent as well.
Consistentcy and volume; showing up everyday, putting up the work, all of work..
Patience ; no need to rush, you'll get there when you there..
Keep improving your game; never stop studying..
And most important thing; DISCIPLINE! Have a reasonable goal to achieve, make a plan and stick to it no matter what happens.. that's what makes the difference
Good luck on tables
A successful poker player needs much more than just knowing the rules. Discipline, patience, emotional control, bankroll management, and the ability to keep learning are what separate winners from the rest. Luck matters in the short term, but over thousands of hands (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/poker-hands/), skill is what consistently comes out on top. ♠️
Ya
In live poker skills are the most important thing in order to win on the long run . But online the story is different , that's why you see love winning players to struggle or lose big in online poker (https://www.casino.us/poker/) .
i think luck is most important part while playing poker bad beats also favours luck.
I think both skill and luck have to come together to make a deep run or achieve a big result. The important thing is having both, but reaching a really high level of skill is difficult. We all have our own knowledge and understanding of how to play, but when skill and luck align, you can accomplish great things. The reality is that very few players have enough skill and consistency to make those results happen regularly.
I think poker is a combination of skill and luck, but skill becomes much more important over a large sample size. A successful player needs discipline, patience, emotional control, bankroll management, and the ability to make good decisions even when the results don't go their way. You can't control the cards you're dealt, but you can control how you play them. ♠️
In my opinion, becoming a successful poker player is about much more than simply winning big pots. You need strong fundamentals, good bankroll management, discipline, emotional control, and the ability to learn from your mistakes. Consistency is also very important, because poker involves a lot of variance.
I would consider someone successful when they are consistently profitable over a meaningful sample size, manage their bankroll responsibly, and are able to make rational decisions even during losing periods. For me, long-term consistency is a much better measure of success than a single big tournament win.
Patience and tightness. At least at first until they all think you are so tight and then POWW a bluff (https://www.casino.us/poker/strategy/bluffing/).
My bankroll building is going amazing! I started with just a $10 deposit on GGPoker, and today I hit a new milestone - over $50 in cash plus some cash dollars! Playing small buy-in tournaments with careful bankroll management really pays off. It feels so great to see steady progress!

Elképesztően halad a bankroll-építésem! Mindössze 10 dolláros befizetéssel kezdtem a GGPokeren, és ma elértem egy új mérföldkövet - több mint 50 dollár készpénzben, plusz némi készpénzdollárban! A kis nevezési díjú versenyeken való játék gondos bankroll-gazdálkodással valóban megtérül. Nagyszerű látni a folyamatos fejlődést!View attachment 414909 (https://www.casino.us/cardschat/attachments/414909/)
This is a great accomplishment, especially if you start with just $10 bankroll! 👏 Your progress shows that disciplined bankroll management and consistency can really make a big difference.
Continue to stay within your own limits, be patient, and focus on making the right decisions instead of chasing short-term results. You are clearly moving in the right direction — keep it up and good luck reaching your next milestone! 🎯💰

Thank you so much for the encouraging words! Sticking to my limits and focusing on the quality of decisions is definitely my main priority right now. It takes patience, but it keeps the game stress-free. Good luck at your tables too!
For me, a successful poker player isn’t just someone who wins big pots. It’s someone who can stay disciplined, manage their bankroll, control emotions, and keep learning.
You can have great technical skills, but if you tilt after a bad beat or play stakes you can’t afford, it catches up with you. I’d say patience and consistency are probably the biggest things. The cards will always have variance, so being able to make good decisions over thousands of hands matters more than any single result. What I reckon most important quality of succesful poker player is perseverance contemplation and self belief and letting go ego
Online poker is more about luck. Live poker is more about skill. It's best if you have a combination of both.
