Mixed Game Rotation

I’m a big advocate for mixed games, even more so when played as fixed limit. There’s just not enough mixed game discussion on the forum. So here’s my optimal mixed game rotation. I don’t think we’ve changed it much at all in over 2 years.

React. Suggest. Post yours.

The following rotation is fantastic. The first 4 games (all split pot games!) involve a double board game, a draw game, a hi-lo game, and a split hand game.

5-Card Double-Board Omaha (God’s Game)

Dra2maha

5-Card Omaha 8 (Big O)

SOHE

After 1 (maybe 2) orbits each of the games above, we introduce a new variation for each, to add some twists for the 2nd half of the night. Same deal. All split pot games with a double board game, a draw game, a hi-lo game, and a split hand game.

5-Card Derailment (God’s Game w/ a Twist)

Dra2maha 49

5-Card ImPLOcean 8

Crazy SOHE

My favorite mixed game is:

6 card, double board, SOHE-Draws-3-Then he discards 1, Hi-Low, 7’s are wild (heads up only game)

Jk.

But I wanted to present to my players something that will likely sound very ordinary to many of you, yet I think it would be enjoyable:

  • NLHE

  • Crazy Pineapple

  • Omaha

  • 5 Card Draw

Just rotate those games through the night.

Gods Game

BigO

Scarney

Draw2maha

Played in that order makes tracking the game in play much easier. Standard fare at many meetups. I’m happy to play this rotation for literally days.

We don't really have set rotations, but there are games that we regularly play:

Big O (5-card PLO8)

2-or-3 Big O

2-or-5 Big O (with or without a draw)

Scrotum

Reverse (must use 3 from hand)

Gods Game (sometimes Hi/Hi, sometimes best high/best low across both boards)

We do mix in some Stud games and some Triple Draw games as well.

We play a fixed rotation that runs on a slideshow controlled by the dealer.

We have about 40 games in the rotation - we have our core games with a few different variants on a given night. In total we probably hit about 25 different games/variants throughout the evening... we're usually done after about 5 hrs.

Here's the current list:

5-Card Double-Board Omaha (God’s Game)

Dra2maha

5-Card Omaha 8 (Big O)

SOHE

I like this, but Bi Sexual in the middle is such a better game than SOHE. I'd add derailment and change Big O to 5 in the hand 6 on the board, extra turn card.

Big O with 5 in hand and 6 on board is called 5-Card ImPLOcean 8. The 6th board card is the ocean.

I agree with you. Both this and Derailment are also in my 2nd rotation.

5-Card Derailment (God’s Game w/ a Twist)

Dra2maha 49

5-Card ImPLOcean 8

We also mix in some Stud and Triple Draw games as fairly often.

I believe God’s Game where the best high across both boards and the best low across both boards win is commonly called as 5-Card Ultimate Omaha 8.

Great game.

God's Game

If it was up to me, we'd just play Draw2maha variants all night lol

In addition to TXNLHE and Pineapple, I've also introduced the following to my crew:

  • Cuckoo bird: Three hole cards are dealt; one is discarded after seeing the flop, and the remaining two must both be used. No Limit. It might also be called 3-card Omaha switching to 2-card Omaha (known by Uncle Doyle as "Greek Hold'em" or "Tight Hold'em").

  • Twin Baby Mammoths (Pot Limit, split pot): Three hole cards. Two three-card boards (split pot), meaning each board has a single-card flop, turn and river. All three hole cards may be used with 2 board cards or vice versa. Can also be played fixed limit pre-flop.

  • 5 or 6-card stud (four betting rounds), with an extra "pompon" if only 5-card (two face-up community cards, only one of which is usable, to be dealt simultaneously with the 5th, face-down, personal card).

Pot limit with only a tiny dealer ante and no forced bet (so checking is possible from the first betting round).

I hope these are of some help. :)

Yeah, I'm not a fan of SOHE either, but too many people in my group enjoy it for me to remove it from the rotation.

ChaosRockRegular32 posts

So you want to focus on Limit only? If yes, I like this:

2 to 7 Triple Draw

Pitch & Roll (not Tahoe, so 4 and 5th streets separately and 7th down)

O8

Archie

Stud

Drawmaha

So a mix of draw, stud and flop games, single pots and split pots.

I like some of the Omaha based games but I think they play way better as Pot Limit.

I remember being on a table of Limit games in a meet-up, dealers choice. We played almost exclusively Omaha based games: it was awful. Didn't see the point, really. Some games are much better Limit, and some Pot Limit.

🤣 That sound insane lol

Dierailment:

Roll a die after rivers are dealt.

1,2 top board derailed

3,4 middle board

5,6 bottom board

Devil’s dierailment:

1 top board

2 middle board

3 bottom board

4 top and middle

5 middle and bottom

6 top and bottom

What is 'Bi Sexual'?

Yeah I'm no fan of SOHE but too many in my group like it for me to pull it out of the rotation.

So bisexual in the middle is a variant of SOHE.

It’s the same game the configuration of your hand is different.

You would get five cards in total you would then separate them into two hands where one card is shared between the two hands.

You would lay them in front of you with three cards in a small pile, one card by itself and another one card by itself.

In this configuration reading from left to right, the three cards on the left would be half of your Omaha hand. The card in the middle would be the other half of your Omaha hand. It would also behalf of your Holdom hand lastly, a single card on the right would be the other half of your hold hand.

Looking at this configuration, you would see the one in the middle goes both ways. Hence the name bisexual in the middle.

Moxie MikeRegular41 posts

So bisexual in the middle is a variant of SOHE.

So if you added a draw component where the 'shared' card could be discarded and replaced with a new card from the stub would you call it 'transexual'?

Or by that point would we just call it LGBTQSOHE? :ROFLMAO:

Have you tried this? How did your players respond? Also what stakes do you run and what limits do you set for the other variants?

We‘ve never tried mixed games and I thought of a simple rotation somewhat like this.

Did you try it? How did your players like it? Also what stakes do you play and what limit did you use for the other games?

Haven’t had a chance to try it yet but a quick survey from the group and they are apprehensive lol (basically as I expected though).

So to a group who’s only played NLHE and you’re trying to introduce mixed games I would run the idea by them and then maybe soft launch it by playing Pineapple or another basic mixed game.

My guess is that people will push back more on a game like Omaha or Draw because it’s so different from NLHE. So my plan when I get to play is only play Pineapple the first night which they should all have fun with it and then add in another game next time with the goal of having 4 games on rotation to mix things up.

Oh, and we play micro stakes, typically $20 buy in, but I would suggest anywhere from $10-20 for my group.

My players only know NLHE and PLO from bomb pots we do hourly. I thought to just do regular PLO and show them Pineapple the first time and just rotate it every orbit.

Would you play Pineapple NL or FL? Omaha in PL?

I will preface this by saying, I should not be the one offering advice here as I have never done it, but, I would do NL as I think adding different betting rules and structures on top different card games might be too much for my players to handle and I think it has a higher chance of turning them off.

My general thought is to try to make the jump as easy as possible lol then if things catch on worry about pot limit later on when people get the hang of the game.

Pineapple NL all the way.

Omaha, even as PL (as if it made a difference to NL) should NOT be played at all among socially related people, IMHO.

Try NL Cuckoo (see my post #15 here).

Our PLO double board bomb pots tend to escalate really bad so I see why you say this. I have never played it normally tho. When having multiple games rotating each orbit I would probably cut the bomb pots.

Our crew used to be primarily hold'em and some wild card stud games (Follow The Queen, Aces and Bases, etc). When we transitioned to mixed games, my group immediately got Scarney right away. Ended up playing this all night.

I think Scarney is easy to digest for hold'em players. Top board is your standard hold'em board + 1 extra river bc hell, why not. The bottom board is easy to score since all you're doing is counting the pips. Plus, you start with SIX cards in hand. What a bargain!

It nicely introduces 2 boards, split pots, discards, and countless rage inducing scenarios where a tidy full house gets casually annihilated by a sneaky straight flush.

I’d heard about Scarney before — sounds really wild!

My main worry is that most of my group is pretty inexperienced and I don’t want them to be overloaded with too many new rules.

I tend to overthink this kind of thing, so it’ll probably be fine. I’ll likely add Pineapple and Omaha or something similar and call it a decent night. See how they handle it, and if they’re into it offer more like Scarney or some stud variants.

It really is wild and surprisingly easy to explain. Maybe throw a demo hand at the beginning of the night when everyone can think a bit more clearly and see how it goes. No money at stake. Just have your players feel out the action.

If your crew is like mine, I guarantee at least few of them will want to deal it out for real afterwards.

Have fun!

On average we select between 5 - 7 of these games for our No Limit mix home game nights.

Because we generally play No Limit, I decided to show the Limit chips that we rarely use.

The 5 game plaques outlined in red are the primary games we typically include, then we choose a few of the remaining games.

Many years ago now we used to do a weekly Tuesday night HORSE game. Had about 6 or 7 people. Then we tried mixing in 2-7 Triple Draw.

Play as 1/2 limit, with 50 to 100 buy-in. It went really well, most of the people got tired of only playing NLHE and wanted a change.

Last time we got together about a month ago now we went with BROTS for Badugi, Razz, Omaha (picked a variation per orbit), Triple Draw and Stud High. Games change as the dealer button gets back to the person that we last changed games on.

Most of the time people enjoy it and it's an excuse to use 4 color decks.

Are those D20s? What do you use them for?

Yes

These are 20-sided percentile dice. Each die has the numbers 0 through 9 printed twice. They became popular with RPGs like Boot Hill and, I believe, Top Secret, and we also used them in Dungeons & Dragons and Gamma World because they made percentile rolling much easier.

The Red Die is the Tens place, and the Blue die is the Ones Place. roll 0-0 that is 100.

Sometimes we hardly use them at all, and other times we use them constantly during our games. We’ll use them for things like seating assignments, or players may use them when making close poker decisions or what to order for dinner or drink, etc.

For example, if someone thinks they have about a 25% chance of making a profitable call, they’ll roll the dice: 1–25 means call, and 26–100 means fold.

Most of the time, whenever someone is rolling for percentages, side bets naturally start forming around the table. Players will bet amongst themselves on what the outcome of the roll will be, usually betting 5 dollars and applying the odds against the odds of the roll.

We also use them for prop bets whenever somebody throws out statistics or probabilities. For example, if someone says, ‘Oh, there’s a 70% chance of that happening,’ we’ll roll the percentile dice and bet on whether the result lands between 1–70 or over 70. We do things like that pretty often.

We have these Prop/Side bets to gamble because of our lack of using Straddles.

That's really interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a D20 printed that way. Is there a reason you don't use 2 D10s? DnD typically uses D10s as percentage dice... or the monster D100 (for sadistic DMs).

Tight_Lay_DOWNMicro-Stakes Grinder9 posts
Posted May 13, 2026, 11:45 PM#45

Well the 20 sided percentile dice were created before the 10 side dice - I believe. So - we old folks were use to those dice.

plus the 20 sided dice roll so much better and longer and spin which creates a more exciting experience, where as a 10 sided die usually just sits there once rolled.

Once we had d20 percentiles, we never used the 10 sided die when they became available. Once we had the d20 percentile, we could never use the D10 percentile when they were distibuted. Just one of those things - maybe from being old - or set in our ways. :)

https://zenopusarchives.blogspot.com/2014/05/tsr-percentile-dice-1970s.html

"Boot Hill used game mechanics that were advanced for the time. Most games still used traditional six-sided dice, but Boot Hill was one of the first games to use two twenty - sided dice as percentile dice for character abilities and skill resolution."

https://www.acaeum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?cache=1&f=1&t=18148

Then we used the boothill dice for Top Secret, and any other game that needed percentile rolls.

Top Secret came with D10 percentile dice, but after looking at them - which Dice would rather roll for your chartacters life???

I've been hosting a monthly seven-card stud tournament that has been working out very well. Used the Blinds Are Up timer app to come up with a blind schedule based on a shorter tournament time (4 hours vs 5). We use the blinds as limits, the bring-in is half of the small limit, rounded up in cases where the small limit is not an even number. That has been working fine up to two tables of 8 so far.

I recently hosted a fixed-limit mixed game ($1/$2) where we played Crazy Pineapple - Seven Card Stud - Omaha on rotation every 15 minutes. It worked out great.

Andrew MarksNewbie1 posts

Here's a game you might try out in your mixed game rotation. We call it 2-1-3. Everyone gets 5 cards. It's a hi-lo game with an 8-low qualifier. The board layout is two cards on the top row, one in the middle row and three on the bottom row aligned like this:

X X

X

That creates vertical rows on one, two, or three cards and horizontal rows of one, two, or three cards. There's a bet before any board cards are exposed, then the top two board cards are turned followed by a bet; then the single middle card is truned followed by a bet, then each player has the option of exchanging one card in their hand for a new card from the deck, and then the bottom row of three is turned followed by a last bet.

You can make a hi or lo hand (or both) with all 5 of your dealt cards (using no board cards), four of your hand cards with either of the single cards, three of your hand cards with either of the two card rows, or two of your hand cards with either of the three card rows.

Just started a .25/.50 home mixed games. 1 table. Some seasoned players, some very green. 5 hour game went really well! Here’s the rotation (in order):

NLHE

PLO: “Just add 2 cards”

Big-O: “Now there are 2 winners” (played limit)

2-7 Single: “Now only low wins, and ST/FL are bad” (played limit)

7 Stud: “It’s a classic”

Everyone seemed to follow along and enjoyed the challenge. There were many discussions… between hands. It was fun to see the lightbulbs click on above their heads!

So which circus game is the most dangerous of all?

I believe Bumbum is the riskiest, particularly for less experienced players.

2 or 5 out of your hand, high/lo w/ a draw.

I need to add more of these into my game.

We play pass the deal, .25/.50 USD, 3-5 times per month, always mixed:

2-3 rounds of NLHE

A round of pot-limit Sviten

A round of pot-limit Big-O

A round of pot-limit scrotum

A round of dealers-choice pot-limit stud

(Stud hi, hi/low qualified or not, and Razz)

A round of dealers-choice anything-goes (no bugs)

A round of dealers-choice $2 bomb pots

(Omaha, Big-O, Hold’em, crazy pineapple, Sviten)

Then back to the top.

We hold 2 tournaments each year: Big-O and Sviten, and occasionally other NLHE events, all framed by mixed cash play.

Our group meets a few times annually and for the past several years we've run only NLH single-table tournaments. On poker night we typically hold three such events. If I were to add one new game it would probably be 2-7 triple draw.

How do you structure a night that includes three tournaments? What approach do you use for the heads-up portion when the majority of players have been eliminated?

My group includes some beginners, so I wanted to keep things fairly straightforward.

Hold'em

Omaha

Stud

Omaha/8

Stud/8

2-7 Triple Draw

9-max, so stud and triple draw are only played when the player count suits. I may add Pineapple to the full-ring rotation to even things out. All games are fixed limit with a button ante for Stud, and the game rotates every orbit.

We play you call it. It is not limited but these are top 10 games we choose in no particular order.

  1. hold em’ - called missionary or ol’ regs. Almost never called after the 1st hour.

  2. BiG O

  3. Scrotum

  4. 3 hand poker

  5. 7 card stud

  6. midnight baseball

  7. all versions of pineapple

  8. double board anything

  9. Rio Rojo anything (if river is red another round of betting)

  10. Detroit (hold em’ but pair of 7s beats anything, worst game ever)

  11. OPCP once we get to 4 or less

We also invented a game called “Bananas.”

Like crazy pineapple, you see the flop with 3 cards. After flop betting ends, everyone passes their discard to the left. Then you select your actual discard before the turn. It’s worked well.

I'm curious if there are some home games that stick to games played in Dealer's Choice tournaments. I remember growing up and playing a lot of midnight baseball, follow the queen, and 'wild' games, but now it's hard to find a game that isn't NLHE, and/or get players interested in learning/playing anything else. A few players I know like the idea of PLO, but not many venture far from there.

From what I can find, the list of games at the WSOP are:

No-Limit Hold’em

Limit Hold’em

Razz

Seven Card Stud

Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Regular

Pot-Limit Hold’em

Pot-Limit Omaha

Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Pot-Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw

Limit Omaha High

Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw

Ace to 5 Lowball Triple Draw

Badugi

Badeucy

Badacy

No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw

No-Limit 5-Card Draw High

Big O

I suspect you're not going to find one that doesn't veer from this list. It seems every dealer who has a choice has a variation that doesn't fit the commonly "accepted" version of the games you list.
