Hello, I'm Martins from Latvia and I think it's time to start a blog. It will help to keep track on progress (if any ♦ ) and my game improvement.

I started with Pokerstrategy 50$ at FTP. Played SSS for about 2 month and realized this kind of poker is not for me. Switched to ST SNG's and also thought it's kinda lame. Moved to FL and I was happy....for a while ♦

Then moved to BSS and now it's about 2 years and still BSSing

Peak of my pokering was playing NL50SH. It was a few weeks before Black Friday and then. meh. After this, I didn't play poker for a while.

Starting of 2012, deposited to pokerstars, played some NL10, NL16, NL10zoom and NL25zoom. When I cleared my 1st deposit bonus, I changed to tracked site and now I'm playing NL25SH.

I think it's about 1.5 months since I've again thought about poker as a job opportunity (if one can say that) and I think it can be. With proper mindset and commitment making decent money is doable. So this blog is my road to that goal.

I play on laptop, so 4-6 tables is maximum that I play, but for game development, 4 tables is excellent. ~1h long session 2-4 times a day. When exams end, I will play more. GL&HF

The way to win at poker is to make better decisions than your opponents do. The way to improve at poker is to make better decisions than you used to.

Woohoo, another Latvian player!

Welcome to our blog section!

It seems like we're getting more and more Latvian bloggers every day... I think you're about the 5th newcomer in the past 2-3 weeks!

Which part of Latvia are you from or currently living in?

On which site are you playing these days?

I live in Latvia too; although I wasn't born here, I still adore it!

Summer's approaching — and the girls, oh, the girls...

You said "When exams end" — what are you studying? How old are you? Share a bit more about yourself!

Thanks frunktpuff!

I'm originally from Cesis, though I live in a student apartment in Riga.

I'm studying for a master’s in electrotechnology, so that's going well.

I play at WPT poker, but I'm not very fond of it. I'll wait and see—maybe I'll stay, maybe I'll move to another site.

Ooh, our countryside is near Cesis, somewhere in the woods outside Amata, so we go there sometimes, nice town for visiting over the day, not sure about if I'd want to live there though, I'm used to larger cities..

Will you be moving back after the term ends or stay in Riga?

Why don't you like WPT poker then? I always found it nice and fishy when I played at PartyPoker.

Regards,

Richard

I don't like the Party network that much because the client is kind of "interesting" when it comes to table selection. You don't always land on the table you clicked ♦

and there are shortstackers everywhere.

there are always fish, and also 2/3 - 4/5 of the player pool are regulars, playing 4+ tables, so it's intriguing.

and sometimes buttons vanish on the table for about 1sec.

I think I need more time to get used to this software, or to stop comparing it to how the PokerStars client feels ♦

and I pay 6.5bb/100 in rake

yesterday played ~800hands and was bit tilted b/c left mouse button doesn't work, so I had to push with M1 with laptops touchpad, but at the end got used to it.

Were you 4 or 6 tabling at the time?

Didn't consider taking a break to cool off while you were tilting and realized it?

martins1337Regular31 posts
Posted Jun 3, 2012, 4:59 PM#9

1st session I was 4tabling and played ~300 hands, then took a break and later played 6 tables. I prefer playing many short (~1 h) sessions.

And the tilt wasn't because I played badly; it was just mouse issues where it worked sometimes and other times it didn't.

Downloaded TableNinja so I don't have to push mouse buttons. I won't have the right equipment to fix the button until next weekend.

Here is music I sometimes listen to while playing ♠_cool:

haven't played that much last days due to Uni stuff, but broke 4 digit mark. fells good, man.

I'm setting myself a starting challenge - 10k hands a week, starting next week. It's not much, but 4tabling is ~300-350hand/h, so it's ~30h of playing. And then the week after that - a bit more hands and so on.

As for this week - finishing semester > all

Flop: ($18.75, 3 players) J♠ 4♠ T♠

MP checks, CO checks, Hero checks

I didn't think anything better would fold and worse call, so I check back. I think this was bad move. VS going broke range I have ~24,5%

Board: T♠J♠4♠

Equity Win Tie

MP2 24.55% 24.55% 0.00% { AcQs }

MP3 75.45% 75.45% 0.00% { JJ-TT, 44, JTs, As9s, As8s, 9s8s, As7s, 8s7s, As6s, As5s, 6s5s, As3s, As2s } = 2.04% of all hands

VS both of them going all in on flop I have ~14%

what they would call pre and fold to cbet?

~8%of all hands,

22-33,55-99,Adxd,Ahxh,Acxc,suited nonspade broadways and 98s,78s,67s nonspades.

This means ~1 in 4 times he has me beat and 3 out of 4 hes folding to cbet (lets assume I play vs MP, and CO folds everything except TT,JJ)

Lets say I cbet 10$ he folds 3/4 of the time and pushes 1/4 of the time an I need to call 47.83-6-10=31,83$. This is 31,83$/(18,75$+10$+31,83$=60,58$) ~ 1/2

EV = Equity * (Win + Investment) - Investment

Money won = FEdeadMoney + (1-FE)(Equity * (Win + Investment) - Investment)???????????????????

Money won = 3/4 18,75$ + 1/4 ( 24,5%*(60,58-31,83)-31,83) ~9,4$????? if investment is also cbet - Money won = 6,6$

If this is correct, cbet/call flop

And vs both of them ... ok time to eat some lunch ♦

Back to NL25

Ran pretty bad, but it was just a shot

One thing I found is - I need good BRM to comfortably play a certain limit. But I think this is normal.

Played ~1.2k hands, so it's ~8.8k to go

"Hit quads, got paid off." [ ] ran bad.

I see your point, one hand doesn't determine the outcome!

Which BRM will you be using going forward then?

martins1337Regular31 posts
Posted Jun 13, 2012, 3:45 PM#19

6,2k hands left

I have another challenge in mind, but that will be for next week. To be honest, I don't like to play just because certain number of hands has to be met. Maybe it's better. If I want to make money in poker, I have to be better then rest of the table, not just grinding for rakeback.

I will try to write some thoughts about the book. I read it ~1.5 years ago, and because I'm losing money, The poker mindset should be a good read. Also not forgetting about hand posting and articles

Yesterday I made huge mistake ♦ I had 20$ left on Stars and played zooom. The software, the hands/hour . After that, playing on party network was like going to 3rd word country.

My plan in to finish FDB and move to site, that has fastfolding poker - iPoker or microgaming. Stars is last option - not tracked.

I will switch to MSS for a while. I don't want to drop down to NL10, so I'll remain at NL25 and play MSS. I don't think this choice is that bad. Understanding how MSS is played should improve my results versus MSSers.

From one article

It is also appropriate for BSS players who want to experiment. Perhaps you simply wish to view things from another angle. Maybe you feel uncertain versus other BSS regulars and want to reorganize your approach. You don't play mid stack merely because you think "I'm a fish and if I play mid stack I'll only lose half." It can be worthwhile for BBS players to try MSS if they've reached a stage in their game where they're unsure how to move forward and want to rejuvenate their play with a fresh strategy.

Back to articles and after that - tables, maybe

martins1337Regular31 posts
Posted Jun 29, 2012, 3:26 PM#32

Got my hands on a monitor. Now 8 tabling is pretty easy and pleasant. I think I'll soon play NL25 BBS again; I need to get accustomed to 2 monitors and 8 tabling.

As for MSS - it's now simpler to play against MSSers. Other players’ errors versus them are setmining and not 3betting enough.

Cheers!

I wrote a list of things I need to do every day — running, reading, pokering, plus a few optional items. This month my objective is to stick to that schedule.

June was a pretty shitty month for poker. I think I played 2,5 weeks and lost a bunch of money. But now things are different. I’m playing 8 tables BSS at NL10 just to get a feel for it and maybe in the next few days shift back to NL25.

was playing NL10 and NL25 and saw couple of regs playing both stakes. I think it's a good idea - not many good tables running, but on both limits combined, there's plenty of action.

Now I'm playing 4h a day average and I like this much more than playing certain number of hands.

Funny pic I found in interwebs

From "The Poker Mindset"

"Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win." - Sin Tzu from The Art of War

I think, if you want to be victorious poker player, you need to have hand reading skills and knowing you are the best player at the table. I have this feeling while i play NL10, now I need to get it at NL25.

The Five Realities of Poker - understand and accept it.

  1. Poker is a game of both skill and luck.

  2. In the short term, luck is king.

  3. In the long term, skill is king.

  4. Poker is a game of small edges.

  5. Poker is a game of high variance.

Last week was good. Played 6days, 13,3k hands. This week I will mainly focus on blind battles - reading articles, videos. Also will write down vision and goals, like Schnitzelfisch said in coaching and his post (https://www.pokerstrategy.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=181760).

Cheers!

Haha I love that last hand, his heart must have dropped. Enjoying the blog and will be following, good luck for this month. I'm playing NL10 atm and going to be taking shots at NL25 this month --- would you say that you notices a jump in the skill levels that is significant? Or is it still just as fishy?

Good luck at the tables!
