Player caught cheating in home game

I play a live tourney in my neighborhood on Thursdays. When one of the guys was handling the chips, he rotated his wrists and showed his palms like a dealer occasionally does, so I had some fun and mimicked it.

He said “We’ve had some issues with a player stealing chips” and he showed me 4 or 5 videos of the player doing that very thing, taking several chips from a pot someone else won, before sliding the rest to them.

They bring his name up often, but this was the first time I saw him in action. Made me sick.

After he was caught the first time, by the player pretending to scroll FB while recording him, the guy apologized and returned some of his winnings. Then he was later caught dealing himself aces off the bottom of the deck, and he is now banned.

I’m guessing he grew up cheating like that and it’s in his blood. Just can’t stop himself. It was wild to see videos of it.

Wow — he got exposed for cheating and they allowed him to remain in the game with honest competitors???,

he only apologized after being found out, not because he genuinely chose to stop,

..I don't think I'll ever get why there's such tolerance for permitting that behavior 👎

While watching the film 'Rounders' I kept hoping other players would knock Worm out throughout the whole movie

The story not ending with him stealing chips is the wild part. This guy must have had blackmail on the person running the game because why else would you let someone like that back?

Lmfao not banned after the first time caught cheating is a freaking joke. You're a terrible game runner and host. He's very lucky he wasn't caught cheating at my home game. He would got the Worm(from Rounders treatment) and ended up in the hospital. My players don't fool around or play games when it comes to cheaters and that's explained to all new players before they even sit down what they're risking by cheating. We've had our home game running for 20+ years now and have had zero cheaters. Have a had a few guys take a pass at playing once they learned of the consequences of cheating at our games thou.

Cheers!!!

I think most of these guys have not even seen Rounders, which shocks me, but I recommended it partially for the Worm character.

I haven’t seen a reason not to trust the host yet. He needs as many as possible willing to fill a minimum of 6 seats each week. He does a lot for the neighborhood aside from providing an awesome venue, and seemed as disappointed as the rest of the guys about allowing a cheater in their midst.

I really like how the guy who caught him handled it, so that it didn’t turn into a brawl like The Sheriff’s Game in Rounders. He just let the guy hang himself and handed over the evidence.

On a side note, I don’t have a ton of experience in leagues, but this is the toughest group I’ve played against. They will chase you the whole way, and I haven’t adjusted well enough to win the main game yet.

this is why i'm nervous about playing local games

Host your own session, or be certain you trust the host.

Also, avoid playing with shady people. Usually you can tell. Many people overlook the warning signs because they don't want to cause a fuss or miss out on 'a good opportunity'. The cheaters rely on that.

That's pretty low stealing from your friends at a game. 🙁 Closest I've ever seen to that was our Christmas Eve afternoon games where I worked over forty years ago. It was a nickel/dime dealer's choice game and the Doog, one of the salesmen, would squirrel away money now and then during the course of the game. Just unethical and not really cheating.

Agreed, stealing from friends, neighbors, etc.

The group likes to sit in the same seats every time, with any newbies like myself to the left or right of the tourney clock runner.

I didn’t understand that at first, but now I do.

Trying to get them all to watch Rounders so they can meet Worm. 😉

I've observed this occur a couple of times, each instance involved a new player who had been brought by a regular.

On both occasions the newcomer was offered the option to either wait outside until the game ended or an unpleasant alternative, and both times they opted to wait outside.

The person who brought the cheater was consistently the one most upset about the situation.

Cheating is unjustifiable — not just in betting or sports but in all areas — because it undermines personal effort.

Individuals vary. For that reason you must remain alert and watch the match carefully.

Cheaters are disgusting — I hope they get barred from the home games.

It's always disappointing to hear stories like that, especially in a local game where people are mostly there to have fun. Taking chips from pots is bad enough, but dealing yourself aces from the bottom of the deck takes it to a completely different level. Once someone is caught cheating multiple times, it's hard to believe it was ever an honest mistake. Banning him was the right decision because trust is everything in poker. Without it, the whole game falls apart.

That's insane. Stealing chips from the pot is bad enough, but dealing yourself aces from the bottom of the deck is a whole different degree. Poker only functions when everyone believes the game is fair. Kicking him out was absolutely the correct call. After someone cheats more than once, trusting them again is nearly impossible.

That’s why I don’t play in home games I’m unfamiliar with, or in places that aren’t regulated or—at the very least—equipped with cameras. Unfortunately, we’re exposed to this kind of thing; there will always be people willing to cheat.

Cheating is a disease! They feel good about not only stealing money, but also that they manage to fool people without them realizing it.
