Pot odds and expected value (EV)

Pot odds vs EV is one of those things that seems tricky until it clicks, then it’s just math you do on autopilot

zyllorNewbie3 posts

Fr once you start thinking in ranges instead of just what you’re holding, the math actually gets simpler

phantkiNewbie3 posts
Posted Jul 9, 2026, 6:47 PM#4

Once you train your brain to calculate it quickly mid-hand, you stop second-guessing yourself and start making way better calls.

sylvar6Newbie3 posts

Fr once you get EV down, the hard part is just trusting it in the moment instead of letting your gut take over

onyxxen7Micro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

Once you stop seeing it as scary math and more like a cheat code, it’s surprising how many spots become automatic calls.

Ngl the transition from gut calls to EV-based decisions is wild, you start folding stuff that used to feel like must-calls and it actually prints over time

umbramiaNewbie3 posts

Tbh the biggest unlock for me was realizing pot odds and EV are basically two sides of the same coin, once you see them as connected the whole thing stops feeling like guesswork

zexlia8Newbie2 posts

Ngl that's exactly it—once you stop treating them as separate concepts and realize they're just different lenses on the same decision, the hesitation kinda disappears

Merien762Newbie2 posts

tbh that's the real level-up, when you stop having to consciously run the numbers and it just becomes second nature

i stopped tilting at bad beats after a session where i literally folded a flush draw cause the math screamed no

folding top pair when the math said i was dead lol

irisuressMicro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

Folded AK preflop once cause the pot odds were absolute garbae

merienkiMicro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

the best habit I built was estimating my equuity against their range out loud at home, even just mumbling it, so it sticks when the clock is ticking

onyxraelleMicro-Stakes Grinder5 posts
Posted Jul 10, 2026, 3:11 AM#16

id rather just mumble equity calcs to myself at home than try to do full pot odds math live tbh

Umbraalora2Micro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

pot odds are safer but ev makes the real money honestly

steinurliaMicro-Stakes Grinder5 posts
Posted Jul 10, 2026, 4:00 AM#18

honestly tracking pot odds against these super loose 6max tables is where the real grind is, people just blast off with second pair and you scoop way more than you should if you stick to the math

wrenixeon14Micro-Stakes Grinder6 posts

Pot odds feel almost routine once you drill them but calculating EV against a sticky loose aggressive 6max lineup is where my houry really started spiking.

shotahunterNewbie3 posts

tbh the hardest part for me isn't the math, it's remembering to do it when I'm tilted after a bad beat ?

vyxynythNewbie3 posts

Pot odds just make you breakeven, real edges come from fold equity.

KyrixtiaNewbie2 posts

EV forces you to think about their entire range not just the immediate call.

thorniroria5Newbie2 posts

EV clicks for me way more than raw pot odds.

tacoballMicro-Stakes Grinder6 posts
Posted Jul 11, 2026, 12:01 AM#24

yeah tbh once pot odds clicks it feels like a cheat code, teh real grind is not punting when your gut says hero call ?

thornoriaNewbie2 posts
Posted Jul 11, 2026, 8:58 AM#25

tbh once i stopped trying to nail pot odds to the exact percent and instead just eyeballed whether a call felt cheap or expensive i played much smoother ev calculations clicked too when i realized im not just mathing out my own hand but constantly building a little story in my head about what theyd do with their whole range

frostndaNewbie3 posts

I once stacked a guy who kept muttering "pot odds say call" while drawing dead because he forgot my range was all value there. It’s funny how fast EV stops caring about your math when you ignore what hands the opponent actually shows up with.

ZexarverNewbie4 posts

Honestly EV holds way more weight for me than pot odds ever did. Pot odds are juust the surface level "can I call" math while EV makes you consider their full range and how often they actually fold to a semibluff.

sophorund016Micro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

one thing i started doin is just quik estimating my outs and multiplying by 2 to get turn equity then compare it to what the pot lays me, saves so much head math mid hand

cedarlyNewbie3 posts
Posted Jul 11, 2026, 12:54 PM#29

nah i dont think EV is that helpful against total maniacs honestly. you end up leveling yourself into calling when their range is literally any two cards and math falls apart. i stick more to pot odds in those spots and just avoid the fancy stuff

norariNewbie1 posts

Learning the EV formula won't fix the frustration of watching someone call your 3bet with 84o and drill the flop.

IvoryalessMicro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

I'd take understanding their range over memorizing pot odds any day.

Fold equity turns marginal calls into money printers.

xoranMicro-Stakes Grinder7 posts

One thing that helped me stop puting after bad beats was physically writing my pot odds calculation on a notepad before calling, makes it way harder to lie to myself about the spot.

ladyseo19Micro-Stakes Grinder7 posts

I once foldd a flush draw with correct pot odds but lost my nerve, only to see the river complete it and my would be opponent shove.

nyxumzyl18Newbie1 posts

Cont your outs twice before calling.

luxarlynMicro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

Honestly pot odds is just the warmup, the real grind starts when you try to apply EV while three tables are popping off and you only got seconds to act. I still mess up when I forget to weight their bluffs properly in my head and end up leveling myself into a hero call.

shredartiaMicro-Stakes Grinder7 posts

I get why people chase fold equity but EV against calling stations is where you print, ignoring that math juts pads their winrate.

vexanan70Micro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

Do you ever actually tally up your overall EV over a sessin or just stick to hand by hand feel, I always woner if keeping a rough log mid session kills the flow.

luxuriantly45Micro-Stakes Grinder10 posts

I always calc the absolute minimum equity I need first and then mentally adjust up if villain is underbluffing the river, keeps my calls from getting too stationy.

tycenneMicro-Stakes Grinder5 posts

Honestly the math side of pot odds finally clicked for me when I stopped treating it like a spreadsheet and started seeing it as a simple ratio at the table. These days I find it way more useful to reverse the thinking and ask myself what kind of EV my opponent is giving themselves with their weird overbets.

vaelixkiMicro-Stakes Grinder7 posts

I dunno, EV is obviously crucal but overthinking it can slow down your decisions when most spots are pretty standard anyway

wrenixeon14Micro-Stakes Grinder6 posts
Posted Jul 12, 2026, 10:49 AM#43

EV gets deeper but pot odds are the safety net that stops me from hemorrhaging chips in obvious spots, so I'll take the routine math over guesswork any day

lyrairythMicro-Stakes Grinder6 posts

I had a hand last night where I called a rievr bet getting 3 to 1 with just ace high because his bluffs were so weighted toward missed flush draws it was printing in the long run, even though I lost that specific pot
