I've heard different opinions about this. Do you think poker is mostly skill, mostly luck, or a mix of both? I'd like to hear what experienced players think.
Is poker more about skill or luck?

fr it's a mix but skill takes over long term, luck just decides who wins the short sessions.
Honestly it's mostly skill if you're grinding consistently, luck just messes with you in the short run lol.
Over a big enough sample size the math doesn’t lie, so skill wins out. Short-term variance can make you feel like a genius or a donkey though.
If you play one hand it’s all luck, but over a month of grinding you’ll see the same faces at the top tables for a reason.
long run it’s definitely a skill game, but those nights where you lose with aces three times in a row make you question everything
ngl the short-term variance can be brutal, but that's exactly why the fish keep coming back—they think they're just unlucky instead of bad

Wow I didn't know that before
I'd say 90% skill 10% luck if we're talking about the long game. The luck part is what makes it not feel like chess though, keeps it fun and unpredictble in the moment.
i feel like the "long run skill" crowd downplays luck a bit too much, cause even pros get wrecked for months sometimes and it's not always tilt or bad play, just the deck being cruel. the real skill is surviving those stretches without going broke, which is way harder than it sounds
focus on playin fewer hands in bad position that alnoe cuts most leaks
Honestly after grinding cash tables for a few years I think it's like 70% skill when you zoom out over 50k hands but man those Sunday sessions where you lose 4 buyins with top pair against runner runner straights sure feel like pure luck lol. The real separator is knowing when to fold a big hand to a nit who only raises with the nuts.
Last month I folded pocket kings preflop and the guy who shoved had aces, that one read saved my whole session honestly.
Skill wins over months but luck decides your tuesday night mood for sure
Poker is never luck
track yuor folds for a week, youl see the skill in what you dont play
One underrated skill that took me ages to realize is knowing when to juts leave the table, huge part of winrate honestly.
For me it clicks most when I think of luck as the cards you get but skill as how you bet them.
Skill shows when you bluff a tight reg off top pair on a scary board, not when you hit a two outer.
I used to think luck carried it but honestly reading opponents over a few hours beats a hot run of cards every time.
The real edge comes from watching how others react after the flop, not just your own hand.
I don’t know
Anyone who says its just one thing has never grinded low stakes for a few months straight. Luck gets you paid that one night but skill is what keeps you from punting it all back before sunrise.
Do you find your own reads get sharper after a long session or do they start to blur?
yeah if you play enough hands the donkeys always give it back, just gotta survive the bad beats without tilting lol ?
def a mix but skill tips the scale long term, the short bursts of luck just mess with your head. i lost a big pot this morning cause i forgot to check if the guy was actually tilting or just acting, small mistake cost me a stack
Luck
I see the point about skill but honestly over a single night luck can just steamroll everything you thought you knew
Both
Anyone who grinds cash games knows luck is real in the short run but after like 5000 hands the crushers start standing out especially in high rake environments where pushing tiny equity edges makes all the difference. Saw it firsthand in some late night NL50 pools where the same 3 or 4 regs were printing just by picking spots against loose passive fish it’s wild how much the skill gap compounds
