I've been considering putting some money into poker, but I'm not confident in my skill level to justify spending on it. Are there good free or low-cost tournaments available to get some practice?

Yeah, I had some good time on State poker. I had a bad beat also, and I got some jackpot. I like the graphics and the free rolls

You can play cash games as low as 0.8$ buyin and tournaments/sng starting from 1$, at times there is freerolls and 0.01$ tournaments with guaranteed prize pools what make them for all practical purposes freerolls.

Yes, there are very few good poker players. Anytime there is a casino that has poker, you get a lot of inexperienced players that just blow money. I would start at the $10 buy in cash games to get a feel of how it works. If you're a winning player, move to the $50 and play 6 tables at a time. Even the $500 tables are pretty easy.

Many casual players shove all-in lightly. They sometimes get lucky and pull off suckouts on others.

Only those with strong poker skills can profit from it; the rest of us are simply there to hand them our money.

Depends on many factors. But all in all it's all in the luck of the cards and 49%skill maxed out.

I really don’t get how that game works

From my viewpoint, yes — it’s certainly achievable. If you’re entering low buy-in tournaments, though, you must be patient and concentrate on gradual improvement.

Numerous top players earn their living from poker, and many stream their sessions for others to watch. There are also live events where a single tournament victory can pay more than what many earn in several years.

Still, it isn’t simple. Becoming consistently profitable requires skill, discipline, sound bankroll management, and considerable patience.
